I'm excited about being here because I know this is the heartland of wrestling, and that's where I want to be.
I want to get close to the fire.
But at personally first said it.
It caught my ear and I was listening real close and I was kind of thinking what he was going to say, but I wasn't sure.
But then he went and said it.
The fire was basically universe firing Coach Cable.
This is a wrestling state.
No place on earth has this type of environment.
That's where the fire is.
It's been four years since the Iowa Iowa State match up has involved the top two teams in the country.
The fire will be raging tonight on the season premiere of College Wrestling from Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
Iowa Public Television Sports brings you the 20th anniversary of college wrestling as the number one ranked Iowa Hawkeyes take on the number two ranked Iowa State cyclones.
Hello to you from us on our 20th college wrestling season.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
I'll tell you what, I personally have had been here for the entire 20 years, and I'm happy to say it's true.
I don't think I've changed a bit in 20 years.
How about you, Tim?
Well, my ten years with you have gone real fast, and I hope the same can be said about me.
What we like best is bringing you the great college wrestlers and teams, and the best thing we can get is number one against number two.
And here we are.
We've got it tonight.
Number one was not hard for the pollsters this year.
We had Iowa coming back with so much firepower, it was easy.
But two through ten, hey, that's a tossup.
Iowa State was 14th One Nation last year, and here they are.
Number two, Bobby Douglas is doing something.
Special and it's a tribute to the coaching.
There's no doubt about that, because those two coaches, Dan Gable and Bobby Douglas, are going to show you tonight that the improvement that individual wrestlers have made in their teams, two.
Of the best and Gable and Bobby Douglas.
Dan Gable, what do you say about in 13 national titles, 2019 Big Ten championships?
He's only lost 20 dual meets in this is 20th.
Year unbelievable.
Team the Olympic coach at one time Dan Gable you'd think he'd sit back and relax but no you don't need to light a fire in him because he didn't think they finish strong last year.
He wants to really push him to another title this year.
But Bobby Douglas, what do you say about him?
One of the best college coaches, one of the best international coaches in wrestling today.
And he's doing something special.
Like I said, here at Iowa State, he's lit a fire under this team, bringing him to number two.
And his next step is snuffing out the Hawkeye Flame.
We always like to talk about one special match, but which one do we pick?
We can start at 118 with Matt and Nora and just go from there.
Well, they've had some close matches and 126 was going to be a great one between Hanson from Iowa State and McGuinness.
But McGuinness is hurt.
Oh my goodness tonight and.
I won 34.
Ironside and Tate will be a good one.
But one of our featured matches will be Billy Zane versus Derek Monster.
Billy Madigan, a Great Falls Montanan all-American boy.
He's got a lot of offense.
He can go low, he can go.
He's got throws.
He can do a lot.
He's going up against Derek Monster, an Iowa product from Newton, Iowa.
And he's got a funny style, kind of Gumby like.
He's very strong.
He's an all-American from a couple of years ago.
They've gone at it.
These two, they split last year.
This will be a great match and the outcome could determine the team outcome.
At £150, you're going to see Lincoln McIlroy be well, not out on the mat.
He's going to be with us.
He's going to help us out at 150 as a guest.
And so what are the what do you say?
Where is this meet going to be decided in your opinion?
Well, the key is one word upsets.
I always favored eight matches.
So therefore, Iowa State obviously has to have a few upsets.
They need to have them early, either 1834 or 42.
It doesn't matter.
They just better get one.
And they could happen because those matches are looked like they're going to be awfully close.
So button it up, get it ready to go.
Here we go.
Number one against number two of the Iowa Hawkeyes, against the Iowa State cyclones.
Coming up next on Iowa Public Television, we're back at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, for the match between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State cyclones.
There are the matchups tonight.
Man, I will go at this way to 118.
Dorman substitutes for McGinniss.
There are some possible choices for Iowa State in the upper weights.
And I will look at we'll look at 158 on up.
Wheldon has moved up to 177 both Horton's Brad and Bart Will Russell for Iowa and that's full heart will make it to 190 for Iowa and we're running the goal in a series that has gone Iowa's way 16 straight times I believe Iowa leads the series with 38 wins.
The referee tonight, by the.
Way, is Dave Fresh out of Colorado Springs, Colorado, one of the most.
Respected of all national referees.
And they like to bring in the good ones for Iowa, against Iowa State, Iowa in the black.
See those new uniforms that Iowa State's wearing?
It's a little bit different.
Look for the cyclones.
This year and you see Noory look at that record.
He's 19 and one.
The only loss was Jomana in the finals of the Midlands.
You know, he's really come on this year really have made a lot of improvements wasn't even ranked last year here he is ranked number four he's been as high as number two.
There's your by area but and he's yet on the way but manner is a very fine cameraman There's a series 3814 and 216 straight as I've suggested.
And Murray is going after Minnow but Matt managed to shrug himself out.
Mina is very, very hard to score on.
A lot of the Iowa wrestlers are hard to score on.
They've got good defense, good hand fighting, the first line of defense, your hands and your shoulders and your hips.
I mean, it does a great job.
He's hard to score on.
Well, you know, again, a three minute first period on the feet, two minute second period, two minute, third period.
Norwich likes to make the shot and Iowa knows that.
And they know very well that Manna is a great kind of wrestler, but they like to get him making the shots themselves.
This year, Dan Gable has wanted him to be a little bit more aggressive.
And there he goes in for the first takedown of this Iowa State.
Iowa Public Television college wrestling.
Season.
Well, he gave up that takedown rather easy once minute, got in real early right here.
Okay.
Here's Minner controlling the tie up right there.
Drops on this single.
Now, he doesn't want to give up anything big this minute can really get you when he gets on top of the head.
And so near he went down for the two.
Men not riding tough on top.
We'll try to keep track of the riding.
Time for you.
As you know, in college wrestling, if at the end of the match, one wrestler has been in the control position one minute more than his opponent, he gets an extra point.
Norrie, a senior and a junior both have improved so much this year.
A Coach Gable kind of credited a summer tournament in Italy that he won an international style tournament.
The end.
He really feels that that gave him a lot of confidence.
He was better on the feet, and he showed it.
And fired him up offensively as much as anything.
Else and has got a lot.
He just hasn't opened up like the coaches wish he would.
A four time state champion out of Illinois and going for now.
He's tough here.
He's got 50 seconds of riding time and he's almost a minute now of riding time here since he took Murray down early in the period to nothing in favor of Mike Mann out of Iowa in the first period with now about 35 seconds to go.
Minute doesn't really think about getting tired.
He's a well-conditioned athlete, as is Murray work ethic.
Great both hard workers in the room.
You see the clock down there in the corner.
What?
And Murray has not been able to make a move against manner and he's piling up riding time is on him.
He's going to have a minute and a half and better at the end of this period.
Now there's a warning against Murray from the referee.
Well, Murray is getting his hips out underneath him.
He's got his head down on the mat and he's just really looks like he's trying to keep his base going to give right in time and keep it close.
He doesn't go back to his feet.
What he'd like is to be able to have 30 seconds left in the match, in the takedown, to win.
And that's one way to do it.
It's a little different, but there's tactics involved in this match.
Well, man, it has to be happy about what happened there.
He's up by two and he got right in time.
And and you could say almost the same.
Here's Murray.
It's still a close match.
And and if he still only down by two going in the last period or so at.
Second period man I had his choice and he's out right away for a third point.
This a big right now very important series on the feet good.
Murray made a shot early wasn't able to finish it man I got out and then man I made that same kind of leg snatch once before, and.
He scored twice with it.
You know, he could do that.
Well, it looks like.
And right now, instead of riding Murray, he might think about getting up and going again because to he's back in 1,000% right there at the end.
There you see him drive to the double but he was able to shuck drop to a leg, single leg cut off to the double and get the two points.
A minute, 35 to go in the two minute second period, man is up five to nothing.
And he's going to let him go.
And he does.
Go straight for three to shoot.
But time on a. Shuteye here from day fresh, the official.
Man has made two shots and he's got two takedowns.
Not bad.
Both of that legs snatch upper leg snatch on the right, on the right leg of Murray.
Jason Murray from Dyersville Beckman.
He's an industrial technology major.
And, you know, he's beaten four of the top ten wrestlers ranked right now this year.
But Manna is the one who beat him, and Mena is beating him now.
514 No needs to control the tie and he's not doing it.
Men is really good at controlling good tie.
And that's what he's doing pretty well here now.
He really doesn't want to shoot in again because men are so tough to score on and can do so much damage when he gets on top of your head.
So he has no reason a situation.
But he's got to do something.
He's got to keep the pressure on men and maybe make men expend some energy and make a great shot and finish it.
40 seconds to go.
In the second period.
Nouri is not being aggressive on the feet right now and man is up 5 to 1 with two takedowns.
This is at Hilton Coliseum, Iowa Public Television.
We've just started.
So you haven't missed you see the top five in 3 minutes.
So that was there's a double double stalling call.
And that means a point for men as well.
And, you know, I don't understand.
A minute there he was backing off and going around.
He wasn't coming forward like he was for the first 4 minutes of the match.
He was coming forward putting a lot of pressure on.
He wasn't putting on finish called stalling on both of them.
That makes it 6 to 1.
Next time they'll each lose a point.
By second period, Nouri gets his chance.
He will go down.
There's Lincoln McIlroy.
We'll have him with us for a little chat and something during the £150 match where he would normally have been if you weren't taking this year out for the Olympics.
One man, a guess his second point.
I'd say sometimes men are the kind of person you don't want to get stalling called against because now he starts coming forward, he starts getting after you.
And sometimes it's just what the doctor order or just what Coach Gable ordered because men are needs to keep coming forward, as does Nouri.
It's a matter of putting the pressure on the other man and keeping it there.
Nouri did make one very early shot and it was a good one and he came very close, but man escaped from it.
He managed to get away and it's the men are on the feet ever since 6 to 2.
In favor of men.
And look at double.
This is a scramble, though.
Who wants it?
Who wants it?
And Sarah Palin gets it as well.
Get scramble men and did a really good job of keeping his presence right there, keeping.
His hips where he could use them.
And they had to come in around for two points.
Takedown.
And that puts man up with his third takedown.
That was a real scramble.
And they both showed some talent in that.
I think it helped.
Right.
Here's the scramble right here.
And he keeps as he keeps off his knee.
You see, that was real important.
Got up to his toes, stopped the head came around for the two points out.
He comes right down.
The shoe has to be tied with 33 seconds here to go.
The scoreboard has the score 8 to 4, 8 to 4 in favor of.
Many of Murray's now going forward venues back it up.
You saw that right off the whistle right there.
If matter came forward, 7 minutes of a match, I don't think that anybody could touch him.
He's he's got very effective shots just there he.
Is again on that Highland matter when he decides to do it, boom, If he lets him go right here and scores.
Another takedown, he'd score an extra point for this for the Hawkeyes.
But that's writing time.
So it's actually a seven point lead as as the match comes to an end.
A big beginning for Iowa.
It's Mike Miller, 11.
Jason Murray.
For example.
You see right there, he.
Gave up the chance for an extra point win for the Hawkeyes.
Coach Gable talking to him right now, but that's what he's talking to him about.
He's got to keep his head in the game.
It's just like not going forward all the time because man has got great control of the ties, great shots and a high percentage of finishing for the two points.
Now, he just didn't he just wasn't in the match.
He made one good shot early and it didn't work.
And that was it because men controlled him from then on.
Here's the crowd at Hilton Coliseum waiting for the match at £126 between Dwight Henson and not Jeff McGuinness.
Tonight.
And he's 16.
So we're having a little.
He's here tonight.
Oh, there's Harold Nichols down and down below.
And so Harold is Harold Tucker, Dr. Harold Nichols, the former coach of Ohio State.
His health has been very bad lately, but he's here.
He wouldn't miss the Iowa State meet and he's been brought out the center of my doctor, Harold Nichols.
And he was my student.
He was the coach, Dan Gable.
Not many events are of that kind, I guess.
Are you two would be people would say it would be worth interrupting a match for.
But the parents of Dr. Harold Nichols, who just came in is one of them.
I would say go back to Iowa against Iowa State and Hilton Coliseum.
You're not going to see Jeff McGuinness who didn't weigh in.
He's had a bad ankle.
So I'm sitting in front of the waiting room today with an ice pack.
His opponent is Nick Dorman from Coralville, Iowa City.
West is a freshman.
He's been tough this year.
He's 12 and six, I think.
Ten, 12 and six, 12 and five.
And he's he's already wrestled some very good wrestlers this year.
But Dwight Henson is probably the best.
He's met Darren's good wrestler.
He's redshirt freshman there is Jeff McGuiness national champion junior for the Iowa Hawkeyes injured tonight and of course the opponent here.
The Iowa state cyclone is Dwight Hanson, sophomore freshman of the year last year in the nation as a redshirt freshman, finishing third in the nation, losing to McGuinness in the semifinals, lost some close matches last year to McGuinness, just a shade behind him and it would have been exciting tonight, but they'll meet again and it's going to be some exciting matches in the future.
But right now, Hanson, Oklahoma high school product, he's got a lot of tools.
Look at that.
Hanson With the explosive speed but doorman's out of it.
Garman from the Iowa City West program he's been right there at hometown.
He's been watching the Hawkeyes for a long time.
And he knows that when you're out there, you don't back off.
You just go go out there and do the best you can against the best.
And someday you're the best three minute first period.
We've used about a minute right now and there is no score.
This is one with McGuinness out that Iowa State figures they absolutely have to have.
You know, and I'm sure they're thinking about extra points like that, but Norman's got something to say about that.
But Hanson has the talent to be able to do it.
It's a matter of how fast he opens up, how much of a role he gets on, needs to control the tide, get in on his leg attacks and start rolling up the points.
If that's what they have in mind.
You got to make it you no score.
We have been halfway through the first three minute period at £126.
It's Iowa over Iowa State, three to nothing with Mina's win at 118 to start it.
Nice move by Dorman there, but no score.
Always keeping the pressure on Hanson right there, letting them know that if you're going to come in on me, you're going to come in on on somebody hard.
And he did a nice job of making a shot and then pushing Hinson out of bounds and getting his back to the mat and that affects anyway psychologically, officials, your opponent.
It's a good start for Dorman.
Hanson needs to go about setting up and making some moves.
The only match that Hanson has lost this year was against Franklin calling of Purdue, who was ranked number seven, up at 134.
He lost in overtime to him very early in the season and that's the only loss in 20 matches for Dwight Hanson.
Well, they're both feeling each other out right there.
They're both, you know, fighting the hand position right there, doing a little hand fighting.
There's Gordon in Goes Dorman.
Who's single and he's set to be better on his feet.
He thinks he likes to wrestle on his feet more than on the mat.
And he's he's done very well with Hanson here in the first period, and there's no score with 30 seconds to go.
Well, he's certainly made the initiation of the action right here.
And Hanson right there controlling the head but not Lauren is level making any attack.
Let's go home and Hilton Coliseum and really there is a there is a warning against this.
This is the kind of match that could end quick because both athletes have the opportunity.
They're explosive and they.
Get in the match quick.
But there are in the first period, Iowa has to be happy because, first of all.
Mcdorman is in this match very well.
He's done Russell's well on his feet right.
Time out for just a moment for Hanson to check the an injury tape on his wrist.
There goes Nick Dorman over to talk with his coaches.
He'll get coaching The injured wrestler cannot do that.
Of.
But.
Well Nick Dorman seems to be with it right now and Hanson seems to just be kind of waiting and sitting back.
First time out.
As a matter of fact, this is Hilton Coliseum.
There's a good sized crowd here ready to go, four on the sidelines.
And they haven't seen anything yet from their team that would get them fired up.
And that's one of the responsibilities of a team like Iowa State and right now, Dwight Hanson has everything going for him.
He's got the talent.
He's got the he's got the credentials.
He could really make it happen right here.
And I know Bobby Douglas wants him to.
Caution against Dorman, who went a little bit too soon on the whistle.
There.
He went a little bit too soon.
Hinson went a little bit too soon on top, but wasn't called for it right up.
Well.
That's Hinson of Iowa State being hand fought by Doyle is almost out.
He is out.
One another in favor of Nick Dormer.
Yeah, you're right about that.
One point about the crowd here.
There's enough high fans at this.
I don't need to let the Hawkeyes in on this.
And Dorman, just the the hand fighting and the pressure in the shots is getting Hawkeye fans excited.
He's keeping the pressure sloppy.
He's treated the pressure wrestling like a substitute out there, like a substitute freshman up against a third place winner in the NCAA.
They should have more points.
And what he's thinking about in mind looks like he's just thinking, well, I'll win this match.
But the cyclones need more than just a win.
They need they need a lift.
Yes, they do.
It's not working.
They lost at 118.
Mike Miller beat Jason Murray 11 to 4.
Pinson doesn't come forward.
He's going to get called again.
He's going to get called.
That's what Bobby just told him right there.
He's backing up.
He backed up again.
He might be thinking, Well, I'm explosive, I can do it.
But it's a matter of playing the game.
And right now he has not been looking favorably at by fresh the official right now because he isn't coming forward Doorman's the one that's coming forward Get out there.
And Dorman is controlling the tide.
Right gets it turned his back to the outside but he hasn't done anything to impress the officials or the crowd.
What?
There he goes in.
There's a big explosive double leg and he gets his first takedown and that's what he's got.
Pinson is so talented.
He's got so much talent.
He can hit he can hit him hard.
He did right there.
Very explosive right there.
Head right in the center.
Double leg, two points.
Right.
Not only his toes are in, but his knees were in.
One of the first offensive points for the cyclones against Iowa.
Probably could have had about four of those in the first period.
HANSEN comes on top with 35 seconds to go, trying to break Dorman down.
He's got him flat to Bobby Douglas, his coach is up.
He likes that.
He wants score, He wants score.
He wants Hinson to do something.
If you're not going to tell them, let him go and take him down.
Whatever I want more points out of it.
Coach Douglas is.
Saying, well, he at least wants them to hold him till the end of the period, which is about 15 seconds away.
Dorman got out.
Yeah, the first time.
He was down in this period to start the period 2 to 1 in favor of Hinson.
There's the end of the period, 2 to 1 in favor of Hinson.
I'm on writing time.
He has 61 seconds worth.
51 seconds.
You're looking at Jeff McGinnis, who normally would be in here at 126 for Iowa.
30 Oh, he's won 41 straight matches in the NCAA competition first last year, as you see in the NCAA, he's two time all-American and only a junior.
He won the Midlands this year, the one of the big mid year tournaments as well.
He won so much.
He won the national championship.
He won the most pins.
He won Outstanding Wrestler.
He won the Champions, the champion.
The only thing he didn't win was fastest pin last year in the NCAA.
But he's not out there tonight.
Nick Dorman is the man and he I think he's up for the challenge.
He's excited about this opportunity to wrestle such a top quality opponent as Dwight Hanson.
Ends and starts on the bottom.
It's his choice.
He leads 2 to 1 and he's out, makes it 3 to 1.
Good action.
He's quick.
He got his hips underneath, stood up and got out.
Here we are again on the feet.
This is where Dorman feels that his best chance is.
Although the only takedown has gone to Hinson, it took almost two periods to get it, though.
And that was Iowa State's first takedown in the meet with nary not getting any against Minner.
Again, three to nothing Iowa.
Now that is Hinson trying to almost walk right into him, bear hug or something like that.
Circle.
Center, center, center, center.
Take it down for.
A minute and a half to go in.
The match will be good.
Double barreled scoop.
Henson using an arm drag there.
He's looking for ways to keep to get around DORMAN Maybe on the side.
We'll come at it from an angle.
McDormand is very good at staying right in front of him.
And what he doesn't want to happen.
Hinson He doesn't want Dorman to push him and get a stalling call against him, then score the takedown for a tie, go to the sudden death.
That's what Gorman needs because of riding time in favor of No, it is not.
He still needs 10 seconds and 60 seconds.
The riding time.
It's a takedown away from going into sudden death.
That's right, Dorman.
From now, Hawkeyes, they're putting up, keeping the pressure, trying to control the tie there.
Just get one good shot, one good finish over.
Hinson All of a sudden, have to turn from wrestling to win to wrestling not to lose right here.
And that can kill you.
Dorman continues to be aggressive.
Hansen has a warning.
Shoot.
We have 30 seconds to go.
3 to 1.
Hansen leads no riding time.
Thank you to.
Looks like a chance to go behind.
But he won't do it.
But like I said, he's set and he says, I've got a 3 to 1 lead and I'm not going to extend myself.
I'm going to win this match.
I have to go.
But it's a dangerous way to wrestle.
Now he has the front headlock, that situation.
There's one he can probably he's hard take the match all the way out.
Just a few seconds to go.
There's a warning.
There's a point.
Take as the match ends 3 to 2 and Dorman getting a penalty point as the match ended, 3 to 2 in favor of Hansen.
He's a tough wrestler, Dwight Hansen, and he's proved it in his close matches with McGinnis he national.
Showing last year.
And he and McGinnis will be wrestling again in the I believe, the all star meet here in a couple of weeks.
And in Iowa City, you're going to hear a lot from Dwight Hansen.
Nick Gorman doing.
A good match.
For match for Dorman and and.
Well, remember that name if you don't already know it.
Nick Dorman.
He's looks like he's a prospect.
He came in for Jeff McGinnis tonight.
It's three three Iowa State and Iowa.
And now we're going to another what should be another really tough match between 134 pounders, quality tape of Iowa State and undefeated Mark Ironside of Iowa was ranked second.
Cody Tate's ranked fourth.
Both these guys were just prospects.
Nobody had heard about them in the NCAA competition and Ironside came on.
Meek became eligible at the semester last year and became an all-American in junior college transfer from out in Kansas and Louisiana State champion and came on Big Eight champion last year.
Both quality wrestlers.
Mike Ironside of Iowa's from Cedar Rapids, Jefferson.
He's a sophomore this year, and he's he's one the Dan Gable is very proud of it.
On the leg is tape but it's on the out of bounds and there'll be no scoring because Ironside.
Managed to cover it very very well with power.
Gable was very good.
He really likes Ironside.
He says, This is my type of kid.
He doesn't complain, he just works.
He doesn't give any excuses.
He just goes and gets it.
From behind and from the front headlock he's in behind, but he has to take to the mat.
If he doesn't get the other leg.
It's a last line of defense for.
Tate, and he's doing a good job right here of cutting the corner right there, finding the angle.
But here comes Ironside back.
Good.
Out of bounds with about two more minutes on the period.
First period at 134.
This is important.
For Ironside to get off going in the first minute there because as the match goes on, Ironside wins a lot of flurry, scores a lot of points.
Tate's got a good strong shot.
Usage, 40.
Nine there.
But Mark Ironside managed to stay out of it.
Stay away from that double leg.
We're down to a minute and a half in the first period, three minute first period, first half gone.
Center, center.
Go back.
Back.
Tate is willing to take shots under against Ironside, but Dan Gable said that side, who has the single leg arm is trying to bring Tate back in right now as long as he keeps his own knees and he's all right.
Well, we've talked about this a lot.
We've talked about this a lot.
Has had the great wrestler score on the edge of the match.
They don't give up.
They don't give up the takedown.
They don't give up trying to get the takedown.
We now have a minute to go in the first period, no score, but there has been plenty of action.
Outside working to get the inside of the sudden Tate's.
Both his arms are hanging over the arms and he's on the outside and he doesn't want to be there coming across, come and get to get inside that.
Are Claudie Tate came up from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Iowa State University.
There's a single high crotch by Mike Ironside.
Yeah.
Ball on the edge of the mat Can he score?
What he's trying to do is suck in that other ankle reaching for it.
It's got to keep it away.
It's got double trouble situation here.
He's got to keep it away, but he's got to find some out of bounds.
Seeing Ironside go under like that reminds me, Dan Gable said that, you know, in high school he could just beat people up.
He could go out there and throw them around.
But he's learned to shoot now, to go under there with low singles, head outside shots in a high crotch like the one he just used.
Cody Tate also has gained some weight this year.
At 34, Tate was just worn for backing up.
Both of them made some shots.
Ironsides connected just like that.
Now he just got out.
He looks like he's going to score this time.
As he cut across to the double leg, the score and the great wrestling score on the edge of the mat.
The great wrestler scored at the end of the period.
The first read, the first one.
We're talking earlier to Mark Armstrong about the chance to wrestle at Hilton Coliseum.
I'm anxious to wrestle there because last year I had sprained my ankle the night before Domi and I wasn't able to wrestle there at a weigh in.
And I wound up and I wanted to wrestle, but it's pretty close to ten.
So Gable helped me out.
And then a cassette tape there.
You know, he's a tough guy.
He's a big wrestler.
He is a good, hard nosed wrestler stuff.
And but that's the type of style, like the wrestling, you know, that's the type of people I like to wrestle.
I'm anxious to get in that Mountain college.
Nothing ever like words at first.
And I love wrestling here.
The Hawk-Eye in front of the Hawk-Eye home ground.
But I also love when the odds are against us somewhere else, too, because I like being.
Set up all the time.
And he's beat the odds by coming out as a freshman last year and becoming an all-American.
Not a lot of freshman do.
Here he goes up against Cody Tate, humble Mark Ironsides, a humble winner.
He has a lot of respect for Cody Tate.
The way you fight people that you have a respect for is you come right at him.
And that's what Mark Ironside does.
As he was talking.
You heard Tate.
You saw Tate escape.
And the score now is.
The other way around.
To get there.
Got to go.
Let's let's go on back.
Attack.
It was a nerve coming out of Ironside.
Right?
Right.
Three to nothing to make the score.
A three to nothing.
And they're back on their feet again where Ironside came through with a takedown a little bit to go, 50 seconds to go in the second period.
See, Tate wants to shoot.
He's got a great attitude.
Tate wants to come after him.
But Ironside is so hard to score on.
He does such a great job of hand fighting right there.
And if even if Tate gets past the hands, he's got the shoulders in the hips to get through and Eyesight's hard to do it.
It might help brands carry down brands right there.
Very strong.
Great job he's put on, Gable said.
He's put on five £6 of muscle between last year and this year.
He's worked hard.
Chloe Tate is the big Eight champion.
He went on to the NCAA days where he did not play, but he was very close to placing.
He has over whom he won two national collegiate terms.
Now he can run the country very well and now has his first takedown against Mark Ironside.
Good flurry by Cody Tate.
Really nice job keeping his head in there.
Did what he had to do, had to eliminate that power.
Ironside stuffing and go behind.
He did that.
He used to spin around a lot of speed.
Took advantage of Ironsides aggressiveness and this is.
Real important for Tate.
To ride him out to hang on right here, not give it up.
And he gets a huge reverse.
What a reversal.
Again.
The ability to score big at the end of a match goes Ironsides way at the end of the second.
Period and a foul 5 to 2 in favor of the Hawk-Eye Mark Ironside over Cody Tate number two just ahead of number four.
Just a lax right here, just just a lax right here on Tate's part, letting the arm get through and coming into a kind of a set Granby type position and then clearing his hips and coming out for two.
Now, the third period starts with Tate on the bottom and Ironside on top five, two, two.
No time advantage for either man to speak of here.
Boy, that was a big two for ion.
Oh wasn't it.
It was a big to for Tate to give up because he was back in it.
Momentum.
He kick in control there and that would have sent a big message if he would have ridden out Ironside and gone into that match in the third period.
The only behind 322.
Takes up and now it's 5 to 3.
There is no riding time, so Tate needs a takedown to tie this and.
Ironside needs a takedown to put it away.
Just a never give up sport.
You just never give up right here.
The wrestler that has that attitude, maybe bigger than the other one, is going to win this match.
Ironside of the Black Hawkeye Uniforms.
Cody Tate in the new Iowa State cycling uniforms Go low, single them countered.
By takes this get a hip tender look for the back door right there and he does.
Comes away with the top score textbook stuff by Ironside shot in came up and under.
With his head between the legs He's got his hips underneath him through the back door covered the hips for two.
Yes a John Smith low ankle single.
Hey get one.
Right down.
And it's 7 to 3 now.
That's with 35 seconds to go in the third period.
Let's go, let's go.
Three, three, team score.
You see Royce out here on the left, there is a finish right there.
Still getting himself under the hips.
Where?
The key right there.
And then watch stepping over those legs, controlling the hips.
One half minute.
Now he's got to drive it home.
Not much time left here.
25 seconds to go.
And Ironside leading by.
Four got the inside wrist looking to put a lot of pressure in.
Keep Cody Tate's hips on the mat.
If you keep the hips on the mat, bottom man isn't going anywhere.
That's a key for all wrestlers.
High school.
You control the hips a point you control, man.
He's got to.
Call for.
An active down there on the man.
8 to 3 now.
Where to get it right and a big win for Mark Ironside and right here time and right in time makes a nine the three he ran over a minute.
You want to imagine exactly by riding out.
And the Hawkeyes jump back in the lead here by a score of 6 to 3 over the Iowa State cyclones after three matches at Hilton Coliseum, Iowa and Iowa State, the opening of our 20th college wrestling series with Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug brown.
That's a disappointing quality tape there will be other days now we come to 142 and Iowa State has Derrick mom's here he was weighed in with another man.
The monsters had a little bit of a problem with a foot with an ankle, I believe.
But he's coming out and his opponent is Bill Attic, who is ranked number one.
That's Derrick Monster of Newton, Iowa senior, the first a two time all-American.
Right.
Just one time the again.
Bills attic was fifth last year after finishing second in the Big ten and the NCAA.
He finished fifth.
They met twice last year early in the season.
Mom's here, as Tim told you in the opening beat, Mark's here and then Sonic one later in the season.
Dual meet.
Right now.
Monster did not place in the NCAA last year.
It was a disappointment for him, but he was an all-American two years ago.
That's right.
And they split last year.
But like Doug said in the Northern Open, it was a winner for Monster.
And then in the dual meet that it came back.
See, this is where Monster likes to be, right there on top of the head.
Static needs to control the tie.
Well, there you go again to keep himself out from under monster up.
And he wants to make the corners keep moving moving laterally where Bobby Douglas said, You know, when you go right at Bill's attic, it's like standing in front of Mike Tyson.
You don't stand in front of Mike Tyson.
You got to find the angles, right?
What it means is he means to move laterally and find those open shots.
Does that.
It does a nice shot.
No.
See, that's an example going straight forward.
Some people call it telegraphing your move.
I was running into a brick wall.
Whatever we went straight for.
He touched the leg, but he didn't get close because he didn't get past that first line of defense, which is at its hands.
If you're just joining us, the score is six to in favor of Iowa over Iowa State after three matches at Hilton Coliseum.
There's a three came by cross-legged single back there.
Now he's panicking.
He's put his hips underneath him, maybe cut off to the double.
But the key right here is not get extended, keep the hips there.
And yet he got the hips crossed off, came around, kick out to go.
Good scramble by.
Monster.
Good job.
Now he needs to sync.
That was it right there.
Right on the edge.
I like that.
You know, good scramble.
And right here, out of bounds.
Oh, that worked a lot.
We talked about brands that work a lot with the brands this past summer, and he's made a big improvement.
According to Coach Gable.
He does have a lot of offense and and he's just got to, you know, both Saddiq and Marcus here.
When you wrestle each other enough, you just got to watch out for the quirks of each wrestler and and it becomes a very tactical match.
Hey, 45 seconds to go on this three minute first period.
There's a shot of a double the.
Offense ready to.
So now there is a warning.
Against Derek Monson tech down by is that a good static that is he.
Didn't give up on it he adjusted he got his hips underneath and drove through a little kind of a duck from a from a from the knees almost.
It was a really well executed second effort by Bill's attic.
Top ranked builds attic leads to nothing over Derek Bouncier.
If you notice where he got to take that, it was on the edge box here.
Look man she got hand control and then Tadic went down to the leg and kept control of the situation.
So he's piling up riding time.
Oh, I'm not going to up right there.
He's bringing Monster back down.
That was Monster tried a little Granby roll type but got stopped in that stopped.
He didn't get stopped long enough to get back points against him.
Saric doing a great job of keeping pressure now he's got the head down he's got the hips on the mat he's control the first.
Period First period is over and it's.
Two to nothing.
Well here he is and he could be extended he could give up right here but what he does get his hips underneath gets back to his toes ducks under drives the hips too and just a little lax by monster.
Right.
There was no reason to give up that takedown.
He had the pressure on the front.
Headlock right there could have turned it into his own moves.
Focus is important for someone like Derek Monster to go all 7 minutes without one second of lacks an account.
His choice he took down in the second period and he's out immediately for his third point three nothing Saric of Iowa leading number one ranked side of leading here of Iowa State three zip.
Monster has done a nice job of putting a little variety into his pack.
It used to be just the front headlock off the shot.
Now he's got some shots in there that work against a lot of people.
They have worked against bills attic yet but he needs to keep the offense going needs to control the tie keep his focus and you'll be okay but he needs to have that offense going you're shot now your shot.
30 seconds gone on the period as they go out of bounds everything but come back to center referee.
Dave Fresh of Colorado Springs came out for this big number one against number two.
Meet Iowa at Iowa State score is 6 to 3.
Iowa after three matches and here it's three Nothing in favor of the man on the black Santa Cruz.
Down again.
A little single action looks like a dangerous position on the ankle, on the knee and they first calls it off.
That months here on the attack there.
And what he did was he was just starting to stuff and go around and create some angles but bad it caught the leg right there.
But that was the right idea by Monsour.
He can't go straight ahead.
He's not going to score inside it going straight ahead.
He's got to do that.
He's got to go to defense.
But he's got to do is control the tie, control the head snap, go around, snap and drop down to a single.
All they can see right there.
No angles to finish it right there.
He needs to finish it.
He needs to come up, needs to keep coming up.
It's a keep coming up.
Can't give up on it.
Here's a very, very important series for the entire Iowa State cycling team to a pulling back on That was a goal that was a quick he got it by the referee didn't give him much of a.
Chance there to see whether he got to.
Good job by monster right there.
But he knows he needs to go right back and do it again.
It's up three.
Nothing in favor of Saddiq.
A key here.
18 seconds.
Left.
A key here for monstrous.
He's needs to take as many or more shots.
And Saddiq does that.
He takes a lot of shots.
Monster needs to take that many more needs a shot like that.
Needs to come right back at him and score at edge of the edge of matter at the end of the period.
At the end of the second period.
And Zanik still leads by three to nothing.
As we begin the third period he's got Derrick Mount's here had his choice for this period and he takes down you pick him up.
He needs to come out boom.
When we have the intermission that after £150 Dream Team ballot, we're asking you to pick the best wrestlers you ever saw on the college wrestling series in 20 years.
That's nice, bro.
And the monster is out.
That's what Monster needs to do.
We need to expend that energy, get it out there, Boom.
Get the crowd into this and start putting the pressure on.
He needs to turn on the offense, makes the shots.
He's got the shots and he's even got the finish.
He just needs to do it in the middle of the man.
Three, two, one.
As a score and 31 seconds of writing time for Saddiq.
If you're looking at the possibility that somebody should someone be taking down Monster One loss this year, only one time he lost to Jon Fisher is no longer a collegiate wrestler.
He's an international star and he lost to him by only one point.
He was right here with him.
It was a controversial call at the end of Match with Jon Fisher.
Jon Fisher, of course, Olympic hopefuls.
That tells you a little bit about where Bill's attic is now.
Monster has a front headlock off the edge of the mat.
10 seconds to go here with Bill Attic leading 3 to 1 over monster Erik Now there's saddiq and what he has to do.
He got in no single.
He kept driving.
He got his hips underneath.
Now what he wants to do is kind of maybe come out the back door, sit clear.
Look at he's looking for a fall out that the Arena.
Monster needs to just keep scrambling with him.
But Zach knew where he was and he gets the takedown.
It's 5 to 1.
Zach right here, putting a lot of pressure on us.
They're not spending a lot of time down on the bottom right there.
In a couple of matches here.
We've seen Iowa State wrestlers within one takedown of getting back in the match and the Hawkeyes got the takedown stat and that happened right here, a four point lead with 20 seconds to go for Zach.
That's right.
5 to 2 right now.
I just said something right here.
It needs to be able to to do something like a front headlock, roll through something that throws right there.
He's got the.
Referee Dave first brings him back to the middle 6 seconds to go here in this match at £142, Bill Zorich of Iowa leads 5 to 2 guys.
Hey, not quite sure what the difficulty was that much time.
Last 6 seconds.
Monster needs to jump in their inside trip.
Something.
Anything.
Doesn't get it done.
Couldn't do it.
And so Bill signing.
Without writing time goes up 5 to 2 and the score is.
9 to 3 in favor of the Hawks.
Well, I'll tell you what we're going to have Lincoln, Mac Arabia, 150, £150 match from Iowa, but not on the mat.
As I said, Lincoln Mac is sitting right here next to me and Tim.
And I'll tell you what, we're going to talk to him like a mack of Arabia in just a bit after we hear what he had to say earlier today about his life on the wrestling mat last year.
A tough day at the end and and we're back Iowa State against Iowa at Hilton Coliseum.
Second half of this match.
I'm £50 and here's like a macaroni hundred and £50 from the University of Iowa.
Last year not wrestling at 150 but watching my Kuka wrestle.
Watching an opponent.
Lincoln, it's really great to have you with us and we're excited to hear your expert commentating here with us.
This is a tough test to watch.
It is tough, but at the same time, we've got a lot of things going on right now with my own competitions and own training.
But to come to a meet like this and watch, especially in my weight class, is a little bit nerve wracking.
Can we talk about Chris Bono just a minute.
You've wrestled him and he's wrestled probably everybody in the nation, I think very, very tough.
Except for you.
He's got something to overcome.
A little height disadvantage, I'd say, but he's done a good job of working real hard and doing some things to overcome that.
Yeah, I've wrestled Chris six times competitively.
He's always a real good competitor.
He does real well with his height.
He's got some real good shots going where he doesn't actually hit a knee.
He's lower, he has good head position and he can come in and attack your legs without ever hitting me.
And it's real deceiving to wrestle him.
And Mike Ukr, who's filling in for you this year very, very well.
What are you looking for?
What do we look for from Mike?
Well, I think this is a pretty good test for Mike.
He had a good record going.
He was ten and going in the Midlands and lost in the first round.
And Bono's ranked, I think number two right now.
Is that correct?
Right.
So this would be a good test for him coming back off a loss in the Midlands.
He only had one match that I didn't know.
That was kind of a short, bitter trip to the Evanston for Mike UGA 150 pounder for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
These two actually competed a year ago at the Northern Open, and I think Mike Buker was in the match and kind of lost right at the end.
Or maybe Bono controlled the third period.
I'm not real sure, but I think it was a one or two point match.
Right.
As I understand it, Mike, Utah was ahead early in the match and then lost something like 7 to 5.
I think.
That's right.
Chris Bono from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, used to be didn't get wrestlers from Florida, but there've been some good ones lately.
And Chris Bono is one of the best.
Mike Huckabee's from Osage, a great wrestling town in northern Iowa.
Bono on the blade snatch from up above.
There's that shot Bono hits about him in the trip.
They swept the leg off and just the first takedown of the match, two to nothing.
What is Mike Utah doing?
It is like a mac makeover.
Well, he needs to get out right away.
He's got a pretty pretty good set out in a pretty fair standup.
And I think it's a matter of doing one and two and three moves at a time, not just one.
Get on a chain.
And you know, how early in your career did you learn that the chain wrestling and not the importance of doing it one, two, three, four, whatever it took.
I learned that in high school, actually, that opponents just can't hold up as soon as you put a lot of pressure on them.
Continue to hit move after move after move, eventually something is going to work.
Yucca is out 2 to 1 as a score.
We're back on our feet again.
So one thing I've noticed about Chris Bono and his improvement is he just keeps coming at you hustles and he's always he's always got fight in him.
Keeps good a great deal of international competition as you're getting ready to try to make the Olympic team like on his on the feet what do you have to what do you have personally working on to make yourself tougher for the international style?
Well, there's a few skills that are a little bit different.
The tactics and strategies are a little different.
The match duration is 5 minutes compared to seven in the college match.
There's a tough.
Double leg by mono at the end of the match.
And in the first period they didn't score 2 to 1, 2 to 1 at the end of the first period, there's a Lincoln Mac arriving.
So what are you doing?
Any specific skills you learn, learn something or you just sharpen up what you already have?
Well, I'm.
Serving up what I have.
I'm also trying to look to work on a lot of new techniques, especially the top position, and also stand out of the in the middle of the mat.
It's almost like you play king of the Madden freestyle.
You can get driven out and give up points really easily that way.
Nerves escape, making it to to escape for Mike Locker.
So it's two two here and £150 at Hilton Coliseum between Iowa State and Iowa.
We talked about the crowd dug this important match for Chris Bono and the Iowa State cyclones to get the crowd back going before the second half of the of the matches go.
And really important, the crowd, they just gave one point.
Iowa.
What was the point for.
That didn't seem to signal it.
Was a little extracurricular activity.
I think out of bounds.
Uh huh.
One green technical violation against red four shot opponent.
So it's a penalty for a technical violation.
Here it is.
And pushing it a little quicker this year.
I think that's one of the advisories from the.
Officials this year.
There was a shot by euchre and again, the first line of defense by Chris Boner Bono Bono was the hands and the shoulders, and he did a good job of stopping euchre and then dropping back in on the double leg.
And I think Cooper used his height to stay away from Lincoln.
What do you.
How would you suggest the reason that Iowa's done so well here in the first four matches, is there a kind of a trend to what you see?
Well, I think that up there they've done a real good job.
Of picking up the pace when they're winning.
It's a one take the difference.
Chris Bono in on the double leg again and the referees stand first as you stepped out of bounds, it looked to us as if did well, of course.
He had a good shot.
And so the crowd, one of that euchre leads 3 to 2.
But Bono doesn't stop coming.
He's a he's a goer.
45 seconds to go.
In the first period, out of bounds.
We're talking to also to Lincoln McElwain here watching this one.
Terrific.
I know we've heard.
Dan Gable say here he is.
He is an admirer of Chris Bowen because of the way he works.
He's a he's a goer.
Yeah.
This is I think Bono feels very comfortable here not being behind.
But maybe a little bit more of a lower scoring match if he's good position and he does come on in the end.
And he's always been in good condition and real strong.
Competitively.
Now he has the front front headlock position.
But it's right there on the edge of the mat again.
All right.
4 to 3 Bono takes.
What was the key there, Lincoln?
Well, I think.
The key there started about 2530 seconds ago.
Bono has been on him and on him and on him and finally snapped.
Him down and was going around him and ended up going into a double leg situation.
I think it's just the tenacity of Bono right now.
This man, it is true.
Is that that's been your style sort.
Of out here he comes again, style.
You know how Bono starts the third period, 2 minutes left to go on the bottom.
It's 4 to 3 in favor of the cyclone Chris Bono here at Hilton Coliseum against Mike Gallagher.
Those 29 losses you saw there for Bono is kind of deceiving because it came early in his career.
He's put a lot of strings together of consecutive wins, ten, 15 last year at one time until he ran into the our guest announcer in the dual meet.
But he's really improved a lot as a wrestler ranked number two.
Bono is out, he stands up.
He got the hands free, turned in his leads 5 to 3.
How?
If you were.
Getting inside of Mikita's head, what would you tell him?
Well, I would be thinking to score right away.
He doesn't.
He needs to not let the clock ticked down.
He needs actually than one takedown, one takedown on tie.
And he probably needs two or possibly three takedowns win this match just because of the way the way it's going to go here.
That's you know, he's driving real hard.
I mean, he's got that double leg again.
I think one thing we know is Bono doesn't wear down.
I guess what we're going to find out if Uka does want I was trying to stay inbounds and still get the point.
Time ticking.
We have a minute left.
Back to the center.
Good match here.
£150.
It's close.
Bono's doing a good job here of staying on offense.
Offensive all the way.
He's ahead.
He's still looking to score, and that's an admirable quality.
You know, both men are trying to score here and that's what the fans like to see.
And that's that's what we're seeing.
Some wrestling when they get ahead, Lincoln, they stop trying to win and they just wrestle not to lose.
Exactly.
Back to the center, what happened out of bouncers?
Chris Bowen.
Bono If you just watched the match, you probably.
Think that Bono is behind right now the way it's going.
That's true.
There's a double leg, 7 to 3 in favor of Bono.
And his team says let him up.
They try to take him down again.
There's a pull out there.
GILCHRIST First step was backwards right there.
That's a telling factor.
And there's Bono coming at you.
You know, if you're Coach Douglas, you.
Wish there was some.
Way Chris Bono could start every minute, beat 118 pounder there because he get everybody going.
We're in the last 10 seconds.
Lincoln Macaroni chuckling.
Well, we're wrapping up here.
There's a takedown for Bono right here and a victory for a cycling team for Chris Paul.
And good luck in the Olympic trials and in your freestyle career this year.
Thank you.
Have you back in college wrestling again next year?
Thank you.
Lincoln McIlroy of Iowa, thank you very much.
Thank you.
We have come to the end of £150.
The score there is Iowa nine.
Iowa State, six, the first half of this meet ends with an upbeat for cyclones after some tough things that happened early.
It's 926926.
Tim.

He worked so hard.
You have to actually work himself out of Hosenball, Turn him over on pending before a full house.

Really?
Yes.
Iowa did start out well with men at £118.
And actually they came close to beating Henson.
That even without Jeff McGuinness.
Right.
And Iowa State didn't get the upset we talked about that they needed they did get a good win from Chris Bono, who was favored to win, did a nice job of beating UConn from Iowa.
But Iowa still has the edge right now.
We have some special things for you on Iowa public television this year.
We are looking forward to some of the best teams in the country, the best meets in the country.
You're now looking at the man at Iowa State University next week, we're going to have two men meet.
So well, those are just actually more than one mate, because that's the National Team Duals.
And Lincoln, Nebraska, we're going to have this year in addition to the finals on Sunday, we're going to have the semifinals in a delay tape delay on Saturday, the 20th at 10:00, the National Team Duals semis and finals.
And now here we go back to wrestling between Iowa and Iowa State.
The Hawkeyes lead 9 to 6.
And here we have Joe Williams against Bret Hart, another two Hawkins for Iowa State, Barnhart Horton from Dubuque, Waller at 150.
And you'll see Brad Horton at 167.
Joe Williams rank number three just showed you why he is ranked so high.
Some people say they think this is the best 158 pounder in the country.
Even Bobby Douglas says he has the whole enchilada.
That's the way you put it.
I just showed you was nicknamed Lightning Williams because he can make things happen just like that.
It was a four time state champion from Mount Carmel High School.
It comes from Harvey, Illinois.
The only loss he had in his entire high school career was when he was penalized for an illegal slam.
Well, he's got it all.
But Bobby Douglas says is the opposing coach there.
But it's kind of like if he moves he scores his only lost this year to tie more Terry and he really didn't make many moves, if any, to Coach Gable.
But he's so explosive and he's just amazingly strong team.
MOORE Terry's from Nebraska.
Bart Horton is from Duke.
While in high school, he was a one time state champ.
There again, you see Williams in on the legs.
We ran.
It's going to be hard to keep out of there.
Scores for.
One.
They put on a double leg.
Look, I'm Barnhart and came into the Iowa state line up two years ago but he really turned his career around last year as a sophomore.
He won 16 matches, seven.
Horton likes to bang and he really gets out.
He's got a hard style of wrestling and that's what he needs to do here against Williams.
And first thing he needs to do is get out needs to come up, not just get based out, needs to get his base, get his hips underneath him, come out.
9 to 6 Iowa leads break.
Iowa State after five matches to second point now for Horton is the second escape.
But Williams has been able to take him down quite easily twice with double legs, controls the tie and then hits like Lightning Come out.
Joe Williams, £158.
There's a Shot by Horton.
Nice shot right there.
But Williams able defensively his hands and shoulders.
Go a minute left in the three minute first period at £158 with Tim Johnson I'm Doug Brown on your 20th year of college wrestling on Iowa public television.
You know, it's one thing to be able to have to put up with and deal with strength or speed or length.
But Horton has to deal with all three against Williams.
He's got speed and strength and then he's got long arms.
He's got a lot of length.
And that's what allows him to utilize his talent so well running it.
So then you don't want to get caught in a bear hug because he can throw you get and.
Run is that front headlock situation.
But Hart managed to avoid being spun there, having the get behind.
By a timer.
Joe Williams, again, he's got that double leg now.
Good hips there by Horton.
He was able to break that shot because it was good hip action right there.
Well run it if Williams.
And he's back to him and.
Now right here is where Horton needs to get active next.
He keeps him off base, but he.
Might at the end of the period in the first five weight classes, that's what happened.
Takedowns 8 to 5 for Iowa, reversals one riding time point is close, as you can tell, and the Hawkeyes lead 9 to 6.
Bart Horton £158.
Joe Williams leads 4 to 2.
Bart Horton was coached by his father, Tom Hall.
There's the coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Dan Gable.
Like I said, 13 national champions chips for the Hawkeyes out of their total of 15 won by the coach there.
Dan Gable Horton takes down the start.
The two minute second period, gets to his feet, tries to free the hands, comes out.
And I think Williams was terribly interested in keeping him down there.
He feels comfortable on his feet, but it is 4 to 3, a one point match for Mr. Horton started taking shape right here.
This is dangerous because Williams can create a gift from anywhere.
That's what he's got locked up.
Here is.
A. Oh, now Horton in trouble.
Watch the referee.
Oh, boy.
Three He has a three point NEAR-FALL And there's a lot of.
Time left a minute 15.
Just trying to clear it so that he can get to.
Morton's.
Got his arm through a tough position for Horton.
And there it is.
It can happen so quickly.
And he did it right off the shot.
Horton got his head close to the knees.
That's all Williams needed to.
Put the cradle on him and pinned for.
3 minutes and 56 seconds of fall for a really tough wrestler.
Third ranked Joe Williams, 56.
Now he got the cradle locked up on Bart Horton and he put his team up now by 915 to 6.
All those extra points.
Right here is what Williams did is.
He kept adjusted.
He kept looking to create space so that Horton shoulder could drop through.
He dropped through momentarily.
Dave Fresh calls the fall.
Joe Williams winning by on a cradle pin.
There's the way he started it.
Now see right there, Hawkins got the arm through and you'd think he's going to be okay.
But what Williams did was he kept the Justin kept sagging back, kept it tight all the time.
Who was down for the book?
I did get an and read.
Here's Brad Horton for Iowa State no relation to Barnhart and who just wrestled here.
This was a freshman and eligibility from Norwalk, Brad Horton, who was a one time state champion, finished second, another time.
Going up against the old man right here, year senior Darrell Weber, who's he's he's given a lot to the Hawkeyes over the years.
He's worked hard.
He's two time all-American, 142 and one last year, 158.
And here he's up at 267.
Doing the job for the Hawkeyes.
Gets better every year.
Very good influence.
The answer, Dan Gable says in the wrestling room.
He's one of the leaders and it expects him to be.
As a fifth year senior from Gilbert ville, Don Bosco.
Brad Horton is in his, as you might expect, has had his ups and downs in his first year.
He's five five.
He's had one pin, but Bobby Douglas doesn't think that he's going to be an impact wrestler.
He called him an impact wrestler for the future.
Loser contests Monday night, but Weber was able to just post ahead there and go around, slide around and get the two points.
He's a much improved wrestler there.
He's controlling the arm two on one with pressure on the head at the same time.
He traded the escape for the takedown because he wants to take down Horton again if he can.
Iowa leads 15 to 6 after six matches at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, and Iowa State in the opening meet of the college wrestling 20th season.
Yeah, Weber is fifth year senior You think you get you're going to lose whoever is and Dan Gable says that his brother Lee Weber, who's a freshman in the room, is one of the biggest surprises.
This freshman.
There's Joe Williams, the four time state champion out of Illinois, has come here and done nothing but become an all-American in his first year of competition, redshirted last year.
So now he's a redshirt sophomore looking for his first national title.
And there's Ryan on a single leg.
Now what he has to do is finish it.
He has to stay on this, keep coming up.
With Horton, on the other hand, is doing what he needs to do.
Go across the body.
The referee, of course, go check the angle of the ankle and knee down there.
See that there isn't any danger of somebody getting hurt.
But stalemate or it's not going anywhere.
2 to 1 is a score here.
Daryl Weber leading.
He's ranked fifth in the country, currently.
One of the reasons for the Hawkeyes success is the amount of takedowns they've had.
Usually when a team outdistance another team by that much takedowns, it indicates the score and 80 seconds with Iowa had 15 to 6 red meet offense.
Fred.
No doubt that the Iowa state man has worn four backing out.
That's what you don't find Weber doing much of he doesn't back he keeps coming at you there he is signaling again.
Now it's important for him to finish it.
He's got a lot of opportunities right?
He chooses.
Not to drop.
Down on the double leg, get the two points.
What goes right now down.
4 to 1 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
Daryl Weber at 177.
We'll see.
Very well done against Kurt Heineman of Iowa.
I. Hi.
Great.
We think it's going to be Matthew Pallas against Lee Fuller, the one line and I think it's going to be a good heavyweight match tonight.
An interesting one with Trent Heinicke and Eric Strong is.
Now tiny It's been a had a good freshman year and he's got a great Cedar Rapids Prairie program and so he'll be great again, another senior versus a coming up at heavyweight Daryl Weber out of Gilbert Veal, Don Bosco High School and great wrestling program there with Coach Magic and and sent a lot of good wrestlers out of that high school.
Weber has been a workman for the Hawkeyes over the years, as we said, and Dan Gable says he just keeps getting better inside the wrist here and trying to turn Horton over right here, stepping way out in front.
Put a lot of pressure on that head.
Horton had his choice here and he took underneath.
And Weber is pounding on him pretty well.
45 seconds of riding time.
That's great.
Horton was warned in the first period because the referee there, fresh, thought he was inactive in a particular spot.
Now he's up and Weber lets him go.
It's 4 to 2.
But he let him go.
But he got a minute, 4 seconds riding time and so he got the job he wanted to get done there.
He knew just what he was doing and he's going to go back to his feet.
Inside position is the key.
Whoever's got it.
Yep, that's the underhook.
They're going to come back to the center.
Coach Bobby Douglas of Iowa State.
Coach Douglas, he's having a great is a. Weber and single player.
Well he got high in the.
Single there and all Horton could do there was not give up more than to the same coach Bobby Douglas Right now things aren't looking so good for the Cyclones he says.
I'm having a great time coaching these young kids.
They're giving me all that I could ask and a lot of fun to coach and they're improving every day.
And he has a couple of good prospects for redshirting this year too.
Sanderson Ben Perkins from Omaha.
Just great.
Corey Sanderson is a three time state champion from Utah and also, I understand, a four point student, which doesn't hurt.
Well, there is still stress academics here at Iowa State and Bobby Douglas says that we spend almost as much an inside trip to point picked down for Weber, and he's perfectly executed inside 15 left in that period to.
8 to 3 in favor of Daryl Weber.
Now he's wrestle at let's see, I'm thinking four ways.
He's a 142 on one 5158 and here is a 167 the same weight that man wrestled when he was an undergraduate assistant coach.
Jim Zaleski.
Great position, 150 £867 wrestler Jim Zaleski.
Yeah, he's got an international competition.
He also he was at the Midlands High.
Placed second, but that's because he didn't wrestle in the finals because he got hurt in the semifinal win.
And so he folded his match.
But first time he'd actually been in competition for a long time.
After he started on the feet.
Glover's going to take the.
Machine down 10 to 3 five takedowns for Weber, and Brad Horton is getting a taste of Hawkeye experience.
Good spin around by Horton.
But he couldn't hold Weber.
And Weber gets the takedown.
It's because Weber knew where he was in position Wise kept his hip so he had some power, could pivot himself, came out and jumped right back out.
On Horton, the thriller, the hands to play to her.
Sure, Coach Douglas doesn't like see Horton's head on the mat right there, not getting his hips underneath him coming up.
But only 50 seconds or so left in third period right here.
And what a lot of riding time for Weber.
He has the point, there's no doubt about it.
So technically 50.
To 50 right here.
Try to spin around here on Horton.
He almost has it, but same thing.
Just gets the hips out from underneath him.
Weber does, comes right back, controls the wrist in the arm, and then comes over for the two points.
He just let Brad Horton go for, let him up and try to take him down again.
There is Horton's first takedown and that brings it down away from possibly a major decision.
Right now he needs to take down.
I was just going to say whether it's put a lot of pressure on Horton the whole match, but it just let him right back in there court and now he's got to work to get that four point, that extra point for the team.
He wants to get.
If he can win by more than eight points, he gets extra points for his team and that's where he thought he was going.
But the takedown in the other direction made a 12 to 7, now 14 to 17.
And he has that extra point because it's 15 with the it is 15 to 7.
For you saw a little peek of a couple of former Hawkeye wrestlers, Travis Speiser and Terry Brands.
So competing toward the Olympics, link to Matt Gravy and Terry Brands and Travis Faze are all kind of get ready for a Russian trip.
Coming up, they're going to be driving.
To Colorado Springs.
Yep, tonight, going to training.
There it is.
With riding time.
That's a major decision for Daryl Weber.
16 to 7, adding adding four more points to the Iowa total.
And it's now 19 to 6 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
You're right.
That was a 6 to 7 win for Weber and four extra on four points for the Hawkeyes.
So now we count to one seven.
Should be an interesting match here between two wrestlers who physically are very much similar.
Neither one is what you'd call a long, rangy one £77 type that's very well known of Iowa.
And Kurt Heitman are very welcoming of Iowa State and Kurt Heitman of Iowa very well and is up from 167 where he's ranked number seven.
Kurt Heitman was a heavyweight high school and he's wrestling 177.
He was a football player at Iowa for a year or two and has come back into the sport of wrestling.
Last year he won 14, lost, placed in the Midlands and now the senior from New Hampton is the number one Hawkeye wrestler at 177.
Very well done.
Came to Iowa State from Inglewood, Colorado, Cherry Park High School there, where he was a three time state champion.
And he's placed twice third in the Big eight, right in welding of Iowa State in the red item of Iowa in the blast there.
Man, here we're getting to the bigger guys and at the smaller weights we that we hand fight and we we just get have so much and and then we get to the the bigger guys when we think well things slowed down they're not working as hard but really what they're doing they're doing the same thing The smaller guys are they just the bigger guys are to battle for position where the smaller guys, they hand fight and it's just a difference and they they're working for the same type of advantages here.
Weldon and Heitman feeling each other out, seeing what the other's going to do before they commit themselves to going underneath.
And Gable says he thinks Heitman is no more than one point from the best wrestlers at this weight.
He lost 3 to 2 to re Sandy of Wyoming, who's currently ranked second basketball this year and he said that there's a nice snap of.
Weldon did a great job right there of taking the head control and it snapping down and going around all in one motion all over.
And I believe that's the first time since Bono that an Iowa State wrestler has been up on the first made the first takedown two to nothing in favor of the cyclone very well.
And boy out.
Welcome to a nice job staying on top stand behind the arms and now keeping heightened his hips down on the ground bringing in well well in came up looking forward to wrestling tied him in here you know that he's pumped he's ready to go and he's excited about this opportunity Coach Douglas saying you just keep that guy down on the mat, keep his hips down, keep the pressure on it, do what you're doing.
It's interesting looking at them on the mat they have similar physical looks, but Wheldon came up from 167 Heitman, as we know, down to 177 in the world and actually looks bigger.
Well, and Wheldon actually up from 158 from last year.
And you make a good point.
There's 19 takedowns for Iowa Iowa State seven and the score 19 to 6.
Something in that.
Riding, buddy parallel come off the side, kind of like rebounding.
And.
You know, there's a warning against the man on top for staying parallel.
Yeah that's right exactly right You can't pin a guy if you're parallel.
But I'll tell you, Weldon's got a good tactics going right here.
He's he's going to need to come outside, show the referee that he's going to try to pin and turn Heitman as a warning the other way or.
The other way.
So referee Dave Fresh.
Well, did a great job of keeping himself heavy it at the.
End of the first period How much riding time on minutes and 16 seconds for Wheldon against Kurt Heitman on the first show that's Wheldon from Englewood, Colorado.
Well he's got it right where he wants him right now.
He's psychologically, I think Heitman surprised very well in saying this is just where I want to go.
And now height of he's picked underneath and wants to come out.
This will be an important series right now for Kurt Heitman.
High Ottoman majoring in business.
He's a new Hampton High School graduate go.
Well height of his first move seem to be head down to the mat and they had a lot to do with Weldon's initial real push on him.
They jolted Heitman and he's able to really do a nice job right here of keeping in parallel keeping the height of his hips down.
Oh, he's that high and flat, there's no doubt about it.
You're I now he's going to have to watch that position there because he's gets a.
High def parallel.
He definitely is parallel.
But I come to the side and Heitman has his hands out and he gets the escape.
That's his first point to the one a minute and 50 seconds of riding time though, for a very well.
Well, you made it.
You made a good statement there.
You said he comes to the side and him gets out.
And that's exactly what happened there.
He came off the parallel position.
Well, then did and Heitman came up.
And so the referee will be watching that and gets back on top.
There's Royce Alger for 867, 77, pounder for Iowa, a couple of time national champion and Olympic hopeful for 1996.
Volunteer assistant at Iowa.
And you can tell he has worked a lot with Kurt Heitman and he's given him as much help as he can give without being out there.
Roland's much improved.
He's hard to shoot on right here.
Heitman will have a hard time to shoot on him.
As I said earlier, they're not as tall as most 177 pounders.
Yeah, sometimes that range will help.
You trying to put some things together.
Your Weldon's made a couple of three shots right there down.
But what he's really looking for is come over top, snap the head and go around, just, like, hit him and did him do that.
This is a very tactical match right here.
It's being choreographed by Coach Douglas.
There's Bobby Douglas there.
There's Bobby Douglas right there.
He knows exactly how he wants Weldon to wrestle every second of this match.
And Weldon is doing a good job of following the coach's orders.
They practice on this and they've talked about it all week long.
You can bet going to give get.
His tie up your collars high ottoman with his right hand.
He was able to swing by shock him with that early in the first period and he got the one to take down that he has.
It's 2 to 1.
The national team duels are next for us.
That's next week, Not just one day, but two.
We're going to have coverage.
Lincoln, Nebraska, the best teams in the country, head to head road team.
I think you and I agree.
This is a fabulous tournament every year.
Oh, it's one of the most exciting weekends of the year.
Tremendous teams.
And we'll have them on Saturday night on a delayed basis at 10:00 on the live on Sunday.
The finals.
Wheldon is out.
He has a two point lead, 3 to 1.
Very good flurry right here.
Doesn't have the two points yet.
Vitamine does a good job.
He got the Whizzer man they fresh says he did not have control before he went out of bounds.
The Whistler crowd didn't.
Like to have him right here.
Oh, that's it's real close.
But Frisch gave Heitman the benefit of the doubt with the whistler in there.
But that was close call.
It probably could have gone either way.
Well, they're doing a good tactical job.
He just got a point for stalling against Heitman right there because he has executed so well.
The tactics that he has practiced are.
4 to 1 now.
And actually remember, too, that Wheldon has a minute and 41 seconds of writing time, a potential point at the end.
Here's a good example of Wheldon.
He got here by staying aggressive, by staying inside, snap in the head.
And now if he doesn't stop and just rustle not to lose, probably win this match.
The only way he can lose this match.
Is if he's controlling.
He's controlling the tie exactly as I say that what the right hand collar he's been able to work off of that just exactly the way he wants to.
And he has not been able to reach in yet.
It's 4 to 1 in favor of the cyclone here at Hilton Coliseum.
Now, it's been the Hawkeyes meet so far, 19 to 6 after seven matches.
Well, this is a wake up call for Kurt Heid because he's a good wrestler.
He's come a long ways.
But I don't think he expected this.
And this is where you have to really turn it on when all of a sudden you find yourself in a circumstance you don't expect to be sure.
Coach Gable, be use this match right here.
You go back to the center.
We have 25 seconds to go in the match.
They hate him.
It hasn't put himself in scoring positions enough here to even be able to score the points against Wheldon.
Wheldon has put himself in those position.
Like you said, Doug, he's controlled the time.
He's controlled it completely.
Stop and he has the right time point.
Now, let's see, he took that that collar and just threw him by 6 seconds to go.
It out of bounds.
No points.
There is 4 to 1.
It will be 5 to 1 if nothing else happens here.
Dan Gable has to be disappointed, but he knows some of the work on now, this is where.
One one upset early for Iowa State would have had him right in this meet.
You're absolutely right, Gary.
A very big win.
Very well then personally for the cycling fans.
Well executed match, like I said, big match for the Cyclones.
A wake up.
Call for Kurt Heideman from Milwaukee.
Very well done.
Defeats Kurt Hartmann at £177.
That move up a weight was a good thing for him and a bad thing for Kurt.
Hired him.
And now we're going to go to 190 to the Mat and John Diggle and Lethal Hart of Iowa wrestled off to see who would hear the Eagles been there most of the year.
Full hearts had an injury, a bad and a bad ankle.
But there he is.
He won the wrestle off this week, the freshman in ineligibility.
He's an eligible freshman from Decorah Engineering student, three time state champion.
He's at £180 now against Matthew Parrott who's been at 177 much of the year.
And some of that time and one night he is a sophomore from Adel, Iowa, Adel DeSoto, Milburn School.
They're both engineering students.
Patterson is a computer engineering sophomore here.
Full art is a goal.
He's very strong and he's it's been a long awaited time that the Hawkeye fans have been waiting to see this young man in Hawkeye uniform in a dual meet like this.
And he goes one way, reverses stats ahead and goes around the other side for two points.
First takedown goes to lethal heart of Iowa, two to nothing.
So let's do it 19 to 9 as the score in the team Iowa over Iowa State with this and the heavyweight matchup to go in the heavyweight match stick around.
Eric Strong, a very fine heavyweight from Iowa.
First time that we've seen a wrestler try to put the legs in as early as full art right there wants to use him.
And of course the Iowa state wrestler needs to defend right here coming around like a reversal and gets the two points.
Was like his arm in the switch.
Casual switch position right there coming back from the other side.
It was kind of a reverse position for two zero lead.
That's the time left in the first period here to nothing in favor of full heart in the black starting to say about the heavyweight.
You'll get your first chance to see freshman heavyweight for Iowa state that Bobby who Bobby Douglas thinks is going to be very good.
He's a pleasant surprise, he says.
And we'll see.
Two Iowa high school heavyweights now with the big schools ranked numbers one and two, Iowa and Iowa State go.
Full hard, putting a lot of pressure on Pat.
It's right here.
And a tight waist inside risk, keeping the hips pressured, getting padded hips down and now it's just a matter of.
Right, buddy, get off him.
Right there is finish the day first.
The referee is saying the full heart.
You are staying parallel.
You're not trying to be in your point.
So he's warned.
You get one free, one get one next time.
It's a next time.
It's a point to not think in favor of lethal heart comes around to the side with Matthew Patterson.
Escape has made it, you know, stubborn enough down there that far decides to let him go.
He had the writing time a minute and 40 seconds.
Circle in, circle in.
And go to work on his feet where he got the first takedown a while ago.
Come on, Training center.
Set up it referee Dave Fresh talk as usual we have our referees Mike.
Fell put a lot of pressure on the head right there then dropped down to single leg and came around, cut off for the two four and it all came from just having a hard style.
They're banging the head, dropping down to the leg attack and getting the two points.
All right, he's got it.
He has a pad, it's flat.
You don't try to drive him.
Always got a real.
Yeah, real tight waist right there.
And if it doesn't improve a lot the way it's gone, then he'll probably let him go.
But he's he's going to die here.
There's the end of the first period, a good first period for lethal Hart back in the lineup at Iowa, 4 to 1.
That's what happened early.
Men are beaten 38 to 4.
Henson had a tough time with Dorman, who was replacing Jeff McGuiness.
Ironside took Tate on an impressive win for the bat still.
Right So attic when Bono of Iowa State got the cyclones some very badly needed points with his £150 in an impressive win over Mike Gallagher.
Now here's Pat at starting on top is his position on top trying to lock up a cross for his cradle out from the looks of it doesn't quite have the crossface but same idea.
Well it didn't didn't come up in an explosive manner.
And as a freshman here and one of the things that you grow and you learn is how to come up from underneath.
And this may be an area that will we'll see grow for for Hart, but he needs to learn to come out, get out first.
Pat is doing a nice job keeping a little hip pressure in there.
He's got the legs in there.
Read your hanging, buddy.
Let's go, Mom.
I was go to that.
It was worn.
You heard Dave first say what he was doing.
He says you're just hanging around.
You didn't want that to come off here.
Because, Oh, there's the Crossface.
Patterson determined wrestler is is a hard worker in the room.
And you can see his determination right there.
He was kind of getting beat on in the first period, but here he is coming back.
He has done a nice job of eliminating the writing time, that full hour belt buildup.
On the bottom.
And again, this is a point now for parents.
In fourth grade.
He pat it's here.
He's trying to put the pressure enough on that he can cradle from the top right here.
He's trying to set them up a little bit.
Hi, there he goes.
That's right.
Fourth, trying to shake him off.
Shake off.
See, now he's got the leg and he's going to try to use it against Pat.
It's so fast trying to stop.
This guy's.
There.
He's coming out.
He's going to he's got the leg now.
He's going to try to use it, turn it into a reversal himself.
His own advantage.
And it's all happening.
With a few seconds left.
What parents need to do is just hang on like a lead.
She needs to hang on.
But he couldn't do it actually.
Universal take escape.
Better than the reversal.
As far as Patterson's concern, what do you.
That it's obviously a very determined wrestler.
Those are the heavyweights.
That's Trans Heinicke, a freshman right out of high school from Swisher Iowa, Prairie High School, Cedar Rapids.
And there's Eric Stoner, who went to high school just up the road here, Webster City started out in Northwestern on Dan Gable's program in his senior year at Iowa High.
There's that cradle from the top.
He's got it.
Sometimes you only get one chance.
Get right back.
At full hearts.
Got himself in good position this time he gets the helicopter.
Leg use it against Patton was able to get the two points.
Reversal.
But hurt but good work.
Parris is the one starter in this meet tonight.
Of the 20 wrestlers who has a more losses than win short cynic look you.
Don't have a tight in wrestling up a weight here his team strategy of bringing Wheldon up to 177 work now they've got Pat it's up here at 190 trying to turn the tables on lead full heart from the Iowa Hawkeyes score 7 to 3.
But Ford ahead with only a minute, eight left in match so far.
And that's a big wrap there on his damaged left knee that's given him some trouble.
128.
Good effort.
Right.
Get that straightened out.
Here.
We go to work again with a minute and 7 seconds left in the match.
No riding time advantage Now.
I got back, I got picked seven two, three out of the three extra parts in on the leg.
I kept good, good, good inside position.
He was kind of on top of the head, stayed inside.
Now he's going to try to finish this single leg, catches the arm, tilts him down, but now has did a nice job of extending.
I finally had a good there with the Crossface.
Now he does it, but he let me wait it a little bit too long and I.
Was able to pull the lake back in.
You get to you get just so many shots and so many one second can make a big difference in wrestling.
I'll tell you that.
For right now, trying to get parallel with him and the situation has gone 21 seconds to go, 7 to 3 in favor of full heart.
Failure right off the whistle gets the inside position covered.
Break that break the time that this needs to break the tie.
But for the.
Cross to cross leg single right there from the inside tie, it's probably going to hang on right here until the edge.
Got out of bounds with about 2 seconds to go, 2 seconds to go.
It's going to be a full hearts match.
2 seconds and three.
Pull heart back in the lineup at £190 beats Matthew Patterson 7 to 3.
He's coming out of three.
I think Patterson is going to be competitive before his career at Iowa stage through.
Well, I think Fullerton is going to be another one of those hard style 190 pounders that the Hawkeyes have been putting out of play.
So that adds three more points to the Hawkeye total.
It's 22 to 9 in the final match with a final match coming up.
This should be an interesting heavyweight match.
There's a very dangerous heavyweight in Eric Stoner.
Everybody knows a headlock coming.
Everybody knows that.
He's had nine calls this year in 11 wins.
He's four.
And he's also good at that.
The low single against Trent Heinicke, a freshman from Cedar Rapids Prairie, right out of high school.
And Stoner gets the first takedown.
Well, I tell you what, that's what Eric Stone storeowner has impressed with that, because if he's going to, he needs to take any thought that Heinicke has of dethroning the senior right at the right at the beginning.
And you can't do it any faster with any more authority than Eric Strowman did it right there.
Yeah.
One of the things.
That was almost an interesting scramble you.
Get once you get your sense of Trent High, Nick's really excited about this match.
Really get excited about the opportunity to wrestle against somebody like Eric Stoner's.
Eyes in on the leg.
Work strainers.
One of these guys that can beat anybody can get beat by anybody.
Like you said, he's very dangerous with the headlock.
He's quick for a heavyweight.
But if there's Justin Greenlee, the great heavyweight from northern Iowa, now in graduate school and vet medicine at the Iowa State, working for the Iowa State, working out with the Iowa State Club with Olympic desires, himself finished second in the Midlands a couple of weeks ago to Roland Gardiner, a highly ranked international wrestler.
But Justin Greeley of the great Greenlee family out of northern Iowa tradition, Joe Gideon.
Eric Stoner in Black Iowa leads to the one you get in.
We saw him when a big win with that head with that headlock last year A here there and Trent Heinicke Bobby Douglas says he has the heart of a.
Lion heart of a lion.
And he's just a hard nosed kid.
Tying up with a two on one.
Now strong and got away from that.
It goes back to what he wants to do.
So people like wrestlers like to make their attacks from a position of time, position that's comfortable for them.
And if you can keep your opponent out of his comfortable position as as Wheldon did with Heitman.
You win well and never let him get into the match and control it the whole way.
And it's kind of textbook job there at 177.
Heavyweights, Trent Heinicke and Eric Sterner.
Well, I saw Eric Sterner get on the scale with his clothes on this morning at £256.
And I believe Trent Heinicke is right around 250.
So they're similar in size.
Stoner Stoner called for backing up there just like he did right there, not stepping forward, and he got warned for stalling.
Every time I see a hawk, I warn for stalling.
I glance over at the Iowa bench to see how Dan Gable takes off.
He doesn't.
He doesn't go for stalling much or or backing away.
Well, both these coaches, they they didn't get where they were back in a way.
They they're they're step forward kind of guys.
In the middle out of bounds with 23 seconds to go in the three minute first period there is Eric storeowner.
Now Heinicke stepping forward and storeowner not stepping forward and he's the one that's been warned for stalling.
Him on 41 runner at the end.
Of the first period.
Hey hey two one there's where you send for a ballot to pick your dream team your college wrestling dream team the rest wrestlers you ever saw in the 20 years of Iowa Public Television set at the box 6450 Johnston 501 31 There is the 800 number down there.
You can call for a ballot to one 800 Iowa TV when we name in that dream team votes.
And in February right there.
This is where he's going to be right there.
And now he's opportunity Stop the first movement.
Stoner needs to keep Stoner off his base, getting broken down, down right quick.
Click to go on.
Is the score in favor of Stoner?
He got a takedown right off the opening whistle with a low single leg drive.
Heinicke needs a big jolt right here.
Is it just really just jolt tiny stoner but didn't get the job done and Stoner comes back out.
And gets the front headlock position and in doing it now try to make something out of that.
Puts a lot of pressure on his opponent right there but hangs a gamer man high stakes is he's in this thing till the end and you can just tell that he's going to make a big impact.
A heavy heavyweight for the Cyclones in the coming years.
3 to 1 in favor of Stoner, The last match of the Iowa Iowa State meet from Hilton Coliseum.
The score is 22 to 9 in favor of Iowa.
That's what happened from 158.
Williams had a pin at £158 oh oh over Horton and Iowa has pulled away since knowledge 22 to 9.
Hit right now.
Right here is where he'd like to start.
Going head lock position.
It's one of those shots.
With those chances and he did it.
But come up now he needs to come up, stay up and needs to pull that pull that leg in and finish it.
He's got the opportunity right now.
He just keep.
That space there.
It needs to keep driving at it.
Oh nine, No score.
Well, you don't get him any chances like that.
I'd say Heinicke really went after it, did everything he could to get the two and Strong wasn't given to.
Instructor counters very well with a roll.
First half.
Good.
And he saved the position.
He still leads 3 to 1, but Heinicke is pushing it on him.
Doesn't get careless.
So there's a point for Heinicke eating out penalty, not working.
That's the end of the second period, 3 to 2.
This time Heinicke will start underneath and.
He can tie the match by getting up.
You know it is interesting and Heinicke is going to go down.
And he wanted to go down he wants to come out now whether Schroeder can keep him down or not, I don't know.
But Heinicke that's a great decision there because he's down by one.
He wants to he wants to make it happen.
Right now, it's all stand up there.
He was able to catch it.
Now, right here, another opportunity for two points and he gets it.
This time.
He got that's his determination right there.
Heinicke really put it right up.
Everything right out of the match right there.
He's gaining storeowners, losing it.
Well, I told you this is going to be a better heavyweight nationally.
Some people thought it isn't over yet.
Another penalty point and it's right here.
He's just like a singer, like Baker.
You've got to take it.
When you got it, he went after him.
He had to kick single, kept it and.
Attack the hips.
Put Schroeder right down there.
Nice job by Trent Heinicke.
We still have a minute and a half.
This match is not over.
Somebody is dangerous, is stronger.
Now right here.
Heinicke needs to just go right back.
And take Stoner where he took him the last time.
Right here.
Needs to stay with him.
Not let Schroeder get a good whizzer right in here.
Yeah.
Drive back.
Remember to go now.
There's a warning against Heinicke.
Bring down a good call.
Heinicke was just hanging on right there.
There's Justin Greeley cheering on his new student right there in Trent Heinicke.
He didn't warn the next stall call against Heinicke was one.
The next talk call against Broner is two point.
3524523.
It's a matter of who can.
Move the basket here in this last three guys.
Here Eric Strong of Iowa against Trent Heinicke they're extraordinary needs to point somewhere three points to win and maybe more Heinicke scores in this last minute goal threat but he's dangerous Go.
Still it's just a matter of how much does have left.
Let your guard down The runner had nine falls and 11 wins but he's down by two.
Points here.
Against Trent Heinicke.
So he said drop down to the lake If he if he loses it.
Right there, he's doing.
A nice job.
He's got a lot of energy left.
Heinicke goes starter, doesn't have much left.
He almost went the wrong way, glancing at his fans to see what to do.
Yeah, it's out of bounds.
He needs to running four more soon.
He's got a point for writing time.
This is all.
Oh, that's right.
He's all looking Trent Heinicke is way just found out that all he needs is for he went to his coaches and said gave the thumbs up and said no, no, no, no.
He has a lot.
Of people giving him help and he doesn't it's hard to know which one to look at.
And he got the writing time, but now he has to stay at it to beat Erik stronger.
He should just keep good position.
It's five good position.
He and he's going to have to work here.
He comes around a little bit.
He got to take Charlie had writing time and he went after it.
Look at that.
He went after it.
Gives Iowa State a lot to go out on right here.
It's not the way Dan Gable wanted to see the.
Hawkeyes close the evening out, although they dominated many matches.
State has a lot to be excited about in the last two out of the last three matches.
Don't you think?
So?
Heavyweights, they have a good heavyweight.
Oh, it's a good crowd, exciting ending.
That's just what Bobby Douglas needs.
And there was a lot of heart there.
And Heidi, being a freshman going up against the senior.
Bobby says he's never once get to use up freshman heavyweight right out of high school.
It just doesn't work.
But Haley is turning out to be a real surprise.
There's the score final.
Iowa 22 and Iowa State 12.
It got started big with Mac Pena winning.
That was the one that really turned it back right away because Jason Murray was never really in that match against Mike Miller.
And so the Hawkeyes jumped out on top.
Dwight Hansen had his hands full beating.
Nick Grimm out of 126.
Then Ironside beats 40, Tate and Zuanic beat Monster.
So out of those first four states, Iowa State was only able get one.
Then at 150, Chris Bowen on one.
As expected, he looked very good and from then on it was pretty much Iowa until he got to those last couple of weights.
Joe Williams looked big.
He had a he had a big ten at £158 over Bart Hawkins.
Then Weber won a major decision very well and looked awfully good for Iowa State, beating Kurt Heitman at £190.
Lethal Heartbeat.
Matthew Patterson, then freshman Trent Heinicke at the Iowa State Farm, something that he'd go home happy about by beating Eric Strong right before Monday's beginning of our 20th college wrestling season.
Tim That was it really was a lot of fun.
And what's fun is we just keep seeing him coming, coming out, you know, you think, well, to the seniors, they leave and it'll never be the same.
And then you watch somebody like Trent Heinicke, you get all excited.
You say, Man, are we going to get to watch this guy wrestle for three years after this and he's only a freshman?
That's really exciting for everyone.
They just keep coming back.
And you see him here on college wrestling in our 22 season.
Send in from Central that bound for the dream team and help us pick out the best wrestlers of all in those years and join us next week with one of the great tournaments of the world.
We've going to be fun.
It's the National Dual tournament from Lincoln, Nebraska.
We'll be there Saturday nights.
That'll be a delayed 10:00.
You'll see the semifinals.
And on Sunday, 2:00, the finals, actually, all all the mats are going to have eight teams in those last two days, 16 of the best teams in the United States, the very some of the very, very best are there all but a couple of the leading teams.
And they go head to head.
There's the crowd here at the Hilton Coliseum after this, the Iowa Iowa State meet.
We're happy to have them back head to head twice.
Good beginning then going to be getting dug out.
Well, again, the final score, Iowa, 22, Iowa State 12.
