Located in Des Moines and Waverly, Iowa.
It's college wrestling today from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
Iowa Public Television presents an intrastate showdown between the fourth ranked Iowa State cyclones and the sixth ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Tim Johnson and welcome to our season debut of college wrestling, our 31st season on Iowa public television.
It's my pleasure to welcome a broadcast partner, former national coach and national champion wrestler Jim Gibbons.
And Jim.
I have one question.
Where's Dan?
Well, he's no longer here with us, but I think he's where he wants to be here.
He's helping the program that he loves.
And if anybody knows anything about being able in his seven or eight year absence away from the Iowa wrestling program, he's never really been very far away from it.
And back there as an assistant coach, I think is where he wants to be.
Well, along with the two new head coaches, which we'll talk about here in a little bit and just the whole sport of wrestling in Iowa, the place is abuzz.
Well, it really is.
And ever, ever since last March when these two coaches were named there, being a change is imminen it's just a new buzz.
And we everybody was thinking about wins this what's what's this next meeting going to be like.
And I think both coaches have kind of told us they think it's important.
Well, let's talk about the coaches and let's start at Iowa State.
The coach, Cale Sanderson, a name that transcends the sport of wrestling sport across the world.
He was named the head coach March 31st and 26 of the Iowa State Cyclones, a four time undefeated national champion, 259 and oh.
Never been done before.
And then he goes ahead and wins the 2004 Olympic gold medal.
And for the past couple of years, he's been the assistant coach for Bobby Douglas and now the head coach, Cale Sanderson.
What do you have to say about it?
He jumps right into the coaching profession, which is going to be a challenge for him.
But as far as a competitor goes, you can't get a guy who's competed at any higher level than Carl Sanderson has done it any better.
He's the icon.
Now that Iowa State Wrestling program, well, he has three All-Americans, four on his lineup this year.
Yes, he has.
The Paulson brothers.
Both Trent and Travis are back, both two time All-Americans and also Kurt Baccus, who was a place winner two years ago, actually almost three years ago, and coming back at 197.
Let's talk about the Iowa program led by their icon, three time NCAA champion Tom Brands.
Tom Brands as a four time all-American, as we said, a three time NCAA champion.
And he's entering the arena right now.
As you can hear from this tremendous crowd, a world champion, an Olympic gold medalist in Atlanta, 1996, and now the past 12 years as an assistant coach to Dan Gable.
And then the past couple of years, he's had head coaching experience at Virginia Tech top brand Tom Brands.
I'll tell you what, they see those pictures.
The fans see those pictures of the Tom Brands, the wrestler out there.
And boy, don't they want those days to come back here with that intense style here.
And I think that's what Tom is looking to bring.
He knows it's going to take time, but he's got great help and and good talent.
I think everything's been that positive.
He's really brought that Iowa wrestling community together.
Well, the Iowa team has three All-Americans as well coming back.
Yes, they do.
Alex Success and Erick, Luke Key and Mark Perry.
Mark Perry, probably one of the more talented wrestlers in the country at any weight class, their captain and their leader and in a big match today was probably the only matchup we'll see between returning All-Americans and Travis Paulson and Mark Perry.
So a chance for him to show leadership again.
Well, I want to hear Jim Gibbons of all Iowa.
Iowa State needs that you've been involved in.
And what a what a great atmosphere.
What do you think about today's meet?
Well, I just have that sneaking suspicion here, since we don't have guys that have a lot of credentials come back or a number of them here, some one of these guys that maybe they're going to be known to or something they do here today.
It's a career filled out here.
This is an opportunity for for somebody who may not have the best career, but ends up having a great match in this match.
And it's not like we haven't seen that before.
Well, we don't have to go very far.
Back when Nick Solano had the big fall to bring Iowa State out and win for the first time in 30 some matches, 30 some meets with Iowa, Iowa State.
And then who will ever forget Dave Awesome.
Bob or Brooks Simpson?
Great matches in the past, guys who didn't necessarily go on to have stellar careers but made their mark in this meet.
And both coaches have said which I love Peggy these guys are on scholarship here this Iowa State is important thing.
We can talk about March all I want, but it's not March, All right?
It's December and it's Iowa.
Iowa State and both wrestlers are both coaches are out there wanting to get the most out of their athletes at this match.
I think it's great.
And it's a year's worth of bragging rights as well.
Absolutely right.
And that goes away long ways when it comes to recruiting and everything else that it takes to build your program.
Well, let's take a look at tonight's matchups and we start off with a feature match hundred and 65, Travis Colson and Mark Perry, number two.
Number four, it should be a really good two and 174 Newquay versus Burger Lane up with 180 for Kenny versus Varner 197 Backus As you talk about Erickson and heavyweight The Whiskey and Fields, and then we go to 125 where fun third and fourth go at it and then 133 Nick Galic versus Gatlin, I guess 141 miler versus versus 149, the fourth Sanderson brother Kyler Sanderson versus Frontier and that 157 that's our quote unquote heavyweight match of the night.
Trent Paulson, the number one ranked wrestler versus Morningstar.
You know, I think, you know, everybody may be aware, it may not be aware of here, but that order is drawn right before the hour hour for a win.
So these athletes weighed in at 3:00 and they drew 165.
I think it's a heck of a draw for the University of Iowa.
I think it's a heck of a draw for them to go out there and get their star wrestler out there out front.
He had a big win.
And it just I think they just had that that it's important for one of these programs to get off to a good start.
And then Iowa State's goes right into there where they're start start being favored in matches with their freshmen.
You know Varner and and you know this I think just to make the point, I think it's a great place for Iowa to start.
To me.
Well, Kevin Tan is the official the night we'll see him and he's been on Iowa public television before.
And right now, one of the reasons we're starting late is because there are so many people coming into the arena.
We have over 11,000 people possibly here in the arena and people still coming in and they want to make accommodations for that.
And that's exciting.
That is exciting.
And I don't know if this place holds over 14,000, Tim, I look around, I don't see many seats and it's been a long time since that's happened in a lot of these people are not season ticket holders because you know that that hasn't been as high as in the past few years.
So these are people are coming out because they're energized by the new coaches and the new era of college wrestlers.
And I tell you what, I'm seeing some red over there in the stands, too.
I saw some old Iowa State All-Americans and national champions making their way back to the program of being around it.
And and that's great to see, too.
And of course, Iowa Iowa fans who travels better in the sport of wrestling than they did last year, where they filled up probably eight sections at the national wrestling tournament.
And they're always by far, you know, probably have the biggest impact in the sport of wrestling as far as their following of their of their other fans.
Even better than Oklahoma State, which is has four national championships behind them.
All the lights are on.
And I'll tell you what, speaking of the lights coming on, how do you think that's going to affect the the freshmen that are coming out here?
Well, I'll tell you what, I've seen a lot of very talented returning national champions and All-Americans come into this environment and get beat by what we would consider maybe above average or average Iowa wrestlers just because of it's in this environment.
So the Iowa state freshmen, you know, they're going to have their hands full.
But if they do show that poise, that's why this is such a great test.
But they do show that poise that really speaks well for their program in the future.
There's Kevin Tan.
You just saw his name up there from Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
He's a native Iowan and does a lot of meets from the NCAA circuit all the way to the national championships.
And here is our starting weight class, £165, Travis Paulson versus Mark Perry.
Of course, you see that Stillwater, Oklahoma, down there by Mark Perry.
He is the nephew of John Smith, the Oklahoma State coach, the Olympic champion, and four time, five time national champion coach with the Cowboys.
He made his way all the way up to here and he's got some pretty tough younger brothers to him that are you know, it'll be, I'm sure, the recruiting wars will be on for them.
But I refereed Kevin got a young brother named Chris Perry that that's dad told me today he got a recruiting letter from both Iowa schools for football.
Well let's wrestle is right Travis Polson He's so solid and basic.
I think he is a formidable opponent for Perry, who is really the opposite.
He is unorthodox, wouldn't you say?
Well, you've seen comments in the paper here with Paulson and he says, Well, you know, Mark Perry doesn't appear that strong and I touch him and he doesn't feel very strong.
But then all of a sudden, you know, he's around behind you and creates great motion and he brings that style that that is not a native Iowa style.
A little bit more Oklahoma State style here at Iowa Wrestling Room.
And we're Palsson is a Greco wrestler by trade and high school has done very well at the Greco-Roman level internationally at the college and high school level.
So tell by his big upper body likes to pummel on and take ground.
These two wrestlers have not met in the last couple of years, but they have met twice in 2000 for Perry winning both times.
So Perry is two and oh against Paul.
But like I said, it's been a couple of years since they wrestled.
Well, Mark Perry, one of the premier wrestlers in the top position in the country, he just really he gets a takedown on you.
That's probably game, set, match most times.
And and Travis Paulson, very difficult guy to break out of his stance.
You see, he likes to primarily lead, you know, one leg forward.
It's usually his right leg.
There he goes.
He's more comfortable leading his right leg there.
And he's looking to tie up Perry.
But I think it's really important if he's to get in this match to make this a physical match and not just a four minute match where you end up having just taken where I think is to Perry's advantage of this match slows down because he's such a great mat wrestler.
So and that's exactly what he needed to do.
Exactly what Paulson needed to do is get in and a big power double leg, 120 left here in this period that power like that was like a freight train coming through.
And I'll tell you what, Paulson never gets in bad position.
So it would seem like he would be a hard person to come back from.
Well, but to hit both these wrestlers hold leads very well.
And that's just a just a straight power double leg.
And what he did do is he didn't go all the way through.
He landed with his head up and his hips down, which allowed him to go ahead and, you know, finish the two Perry was looking to roll through in that situation and didn't do it.
So here's you're going to see Perry, who's had difficulty in the past, is probably Mark Perry is one of his more weaker positions in the able to get out from underneath.
That's a real strong move by Perry getting the escape scores 2 to 1 in favor of Travis Polson with the early takedown.
Perry's escape low single leg by Perry.
Then he tried to switch off the two on that.
Now he's locked in the crotch.
He's really strong in here.
He'll come out, he'll bring that all the way up and look for the scoop.
Now, power situation here by Paulson drops his hips here.
He's not out of this yet.
Boy, these guys are really going at it.
Now.
This is a great first match for the series here between these two coaches.
And that's 2.1.
Oh, man, That's a huge amount of power here by Perry.
And we'll see what he's got left in this match because he's given a lot of energy there and he's just a Gumby underneath that underneath position.
The Paulson wants to keep him right there on the edge, not give him a new start.
As we approach the end of the first period.
Two takedown for the first period for Travis Folsom gives him a 4 to 1 lead and he rode him out.
That was big.
Oh, it's always big when you finish on top at the top position at the end of your period.
But, boy, I tell you what, great flurry between those two wrestlers and Paulson showed a lot of poise, you know, with Tim, when you get lifted up in the air, that position that strikes fear in your heart.
You know, you're up there in the air and I'm looking for a safe place to land.
And Paulson basically fought his way through that.
I was really impressed with that scramble.
Paulson begins the second period underneath Mark Perry on top controls.
Paulson, the Lewis Central product here from the Council Bluffs border.
Here you see Perry looking for that cradle type action.
He's got that leg in so tough in here for an end.
And that's a quick stalemate there by referee Kevin Tan because Mark Perry in that top position, he's probably pinned 16 or 17 opponents last year in a kind of an injury shortened season.
Last year.
His turn most of the wrestlers he's Russell this year so he wants to have time to work up their grip on this is a tough situation here both legs in it now and an athlete has both legs in there like that.
There's really not a lot that the bottom man can do, but we'll see how it's called here.
Relevant about what you and I think about this is what does the official think that's going on there?
Well, the one thing that is relevant is we know that if Paulson has to keep his head up and keep coming up, can't put the head down on the mat.
And Perry is doing an excellent job.
The rest are the key right now as well.
And very comfortable getting that right leg in.
Let's watch Mark Perry's right leg as he gets in the referee position.
That right leg is what's going to be coming in to see if he changes it up.
It starts laughs, kind of hovers, waits for the opening.
Paulson's got his head down.
Now he's trying to get that right leg and see the battle.
Paulson knows that he's guys right elbow trying to kick that dirt there came in and he he had his right elbow out there posted.
Yeah.
And Paulson's using a lot of strength in here, but right now he's in a kind of a fetal position.
No, no harm right now for anybody.
Yeah, but the thing is, that's the advantage here for Perry is he's he's gotten Paulson's knees away from his chest.
Now his chest comes, his knees come back up to his chest.
Now he's got Perry a little bit of trouble.
Heart.
Perry's awful comfortable in here.
He's trying Paulson is trying to shake Perry off here.
But like he says, he feels like he's wrestling a rubber band.
Paulson says about Perry.
He feels him when he grabs him.
He's not grabbing anything because this is very unorthodox.
This is where he has a differing opinion on how strong he is.
Rick Perry is an animal in this top position, but Paulson has done a good job of neutralizing it with a41 lead.
That's it.
So Perry rides Paulson out in that second period.
The score still remains.
Paulson from Iowa State for Perry from Iowa one, we enter the third period, Perry will go down, Paulson comes on top.
You're looking at, well, brands there on the right.
Critical situation here.
Tim Perry has won 12 of riding time.
So in order for Paulson to cut that, he has to cut this down to, you know, 148 in the match and the clock in your upper right hand corner.
There.
So he's got to be offensive and not just give up the easy escape like he did earlier.
Now he doesn't put the legs in.
He just comes to a crab ride.
But he's got his he's got his he's got what he wants right now.
As far as cutting the riding time, now he's making trying to make Mark Perry want to come out.
Now he's getting what he wants from the referee.
Not saying that Perry is out yet.
Yeah.
And he's not saying that Paulson stalling either, which is he's not really doing a very good job of coming up.
Perry forcing the action.
This could be interesting here.
That's a good stalling call.
That's a great call right there.
Paulson comes in on the bear, hugs, Nick Ryan.
So the risk reward there.
Paulson really didn't get much more.
His additional seconds of riding time.
He gave up a stall warning here.
I think that one of the things about coaching here, Tim, is that you have no opportunity to get into your athlete's head with this crowd.
They can't even hear, you know, he just they're out there and that's where the preparation comes in.
You're listening to the expert commentary of Jim Gibbons, national champion, wrestler and national champion coach at Iowa State.
I'm Tim Johnson and we're in the first match of the big meet Iowa of Iowa State.
And I'll tell you what, Paulson controlling the ties.
You know, I wouldn't be surprised to see him come in on one shot right here.
He's got time to be able to go ahead and do that.
And then Perry, excellent duck under Russell.
There it is right there.
Duck under to a single leg shot right now he's trying to step around.
This is where Paulson was effective in the first period, coming all the way up.
Look, look at that scramble.
Boy, that's great.
That's great.
Russell, 30 seconds left.
So now, even if if Perry were to score, it's Paulson looking for the stalemate.
Perry trying to roll around, getting the two.
Even the Perry one score takedown here will be no change in writing time.
Oh, looks great.
That's going to tell you what I don't know about that call, but Mark Harris is up on top right now.
That is two right there.
Definitely two.
Maybe not what it was called, but it certainly ended up being two.
Here we go.
Yeah, over time.
Walk away to start, baby and I'll give you.
Okay.
In overtime, right here is the replay and here's where he gets the third.
Now this is here we go.
Injury time.
Here.
Well, let's talk about overtime.
Well, I tell you what, overtime the rules are basically the sudden victory situation where the athletes will go for a for a minute.
There you see Coach Gable out there to Sanderson and Gable or John at each other.
Right.
You know what?
You talk about Iowa style, All right?
This doesn't look like Iowa style out here.
But of course, you got an athlete that's hurt.
He's got a charley horse.
And it's tough to be one of the first guys out there.
You haven't had an opportunity to rehydrate at all, practically.
And Mark Perry's gotten a little bit of weight at this weight class here at 65.
They'll put him in a lot of scrambling.
What a scramble right here.
Now, the referee call to right there, and that is not to but later on, see how that leg gets hooked up over.
I think that ends up becoming two a little bit later, but certainl We've got a minute on the scoreboard.
We'll go in.
And if either wrestler scores at all in this minute, though, the match is over.
If not, they'll go to the up and down position and we'll talk to you about that then.
So it's sudden victory right now.
So score wins it again.
Mark Perry down a weight class from last year.
We'll see if that will affect him here conditioning wise.
We've always seen that he's had a cramp.
Yeah, he's gotten a couple of minutes arrest, that's for sure.
And if you're Travis Paulson, you want to get back on your shot.
It's a song that I think the coaching staff at Iowa State, everybody off their off their chair there.
Yeah.
And who's going to who's going to go for it?
Here's going to take that shot.
There's that beautiful Duncan under shot here.
Now, tell you what, that same situation here.
We had the leg hooked up.
Nothing yet.
30 seconds left.
I tell you what, almost identical situation, Mark Perry coming through with the scramble.
He's going to get the two points.
I'll tell you what I like that from the standpoint of the guy who took a shot, took the risk, he wins the winner, Mark Perry, in sudden victory overtime.
I tell you what he's doing.
All these coaches are out here.
The man who well, what they're saying is Mark Perry was not injured.
That's what the coaches are talking about.
I'm not saying it, but they're mad.
They were saying he took a break.
It was deliberate.
That's what they're saying.
If it is, it was not Iowa style wrestling.
Right.
And that's why they said so.
Don't give us this.
I will start right off that you're going to go do that.
That's right.
And mean all Gable out there on the mat in a hurry.
He's out there talking three zero now Iowa over Iowa State.
He's talking to former assistant Tim Hartung.
Tim Hartung was over here a year last year or so.
So tell you what, great match though.
It was great of bringing in the new era of college wrestling in Iowa.
And now we're looking at junior Dave BERLONI here for Leno from Mount Pleasant, Ohio, Iowa State's 174 pounder going up against Eric Ludtke lucky all-American.
And last year, after coming from junior college ranks, one some big matches for Iowa last year.
Yes, he has it.
He's of course, he's the all-American at that weight.
Can an opportunity to see him go against you and I.
And he had a had a close match there.
He finished eighth in the country last season.
Merlene and a wrestler that's been in the program for a while, but just hasn't really caught fire yet, maybe might have some talent.
We've seen him on public television before, but you know, Luke, he really came on last year for Iowa at the national wrestling term, replacing placing eighth.
I mean, you know, we talk about, you know, March being where he he just had a mediocre year, but he won some big matches and then he became an all-American.
So he wrestled at the right time.
Yeah, he did.
And I tell you what I mean, this Iowa program, they finished fourth last year.
Not a lot of people gave him a much credit for for really how they finished at the end of the year.
They got mixed up in the coaching change, but maybe a poor regular season.
But the tournament, they wrestled well for their talent level that they had, they brought to the tournament.
I think that's what the what the issues have been is that they want to get more talented.
Luke Keith from Iowa, from Colby, Kansas, Colby Community College and last year as a junior, as we talked about, all-American for the Hawkeyes, placing eight that £165.
Now he's up the weight.
He and Mark Perry have traded weight classes.
They have won just a single leg shot.
They're not much of a setup.
Okay.
Just double underhook.
They're stalemate position.
They'll get new Start.
But Birtley knows he's a good wrestler.
He can scramble.
Like you said, we've seen him on cable public television before.
He's a chance to win.
Sometimes he has faded late.
I remember, but maybe that was a weight thing.
And now he's up to 164 and I mean, he beat some good wrestlers last year.
He upset Oklahoma's West Roberts and had some nice wins.
He has he has had some nice wins.
And of course, the guy in the black is the all-American in his matches have been kind of the opposite.
He's a slow starter and ends up finishing a little bit, quite a bit stronger.
We've seen him, you know, come on in matches and and hasn't really, you know, shown the talent he's capable of early.
We're seeing more of that here today so he has yet to get a shot off of it in less than a minute in the first period you know second match in the big meet here in Carver Hawkeye in the cyclones of Iowa State.
Knock eyes of Iowa.
Iowa leads three oh after the overtime victory.
Mark Perry, number two ranked wrestler at 165 over the number four ranked Travis Paulson.
Good.
How about that start, though, You know, good close competitive match just like we always used to see note nice low single third.
No no no finish is kind of a one and done situation guys shoelaces flat so you really don't have any intention of driving into the match.
But how about that situation?
You know, these two coaches have a lot of respect for each other.
There's a you know, you're an Olympic champion, that's an elite community, but, you know, got a little controversial out there.
And everybody hit the everybody here for the center and start a job.
Well, you know what?
The deal usually at an arena, you only had one Olympic gold medalist.
And we have three Olympic gold medals.
Yeah, no, not in the middle of the match.
Nobody's backing down.
You have not much time left.
It's going to end zero zero here in the first period.
Lucky and Berlin on the second tier.
Iowa gets the choice and Luke Key defers to Portland in the first one.
Okay, here we go.
Oh, now early.
No cheers.
Chooses down more correctly.
Maybe Coach Sanderson shows down for Toledo.
Yeah, I think that's where he wants to be.
And never seen that before.
Where the referee asked the coach.
But maybe that's a rule change.
I'm not aware of that.
It a you want to go off the mat here at the Iowa State wrestler and if he were also you can hang right in there and stay on those legs and buy yourself some match time or some riding time and a close match.
Tim Hartung, extra time, NCAA champion from Minnesota last year in the black and gold of Iowa.
Yeah, talk about a guy with, you know his guys coaching a resume he's wrestled in coach with Jay Robinson at Minnesota coached with Jimmy Zaleski at Iowa and Iowa wrestling program and also now at Iowa State.
Very personable guy who is Sanderson's training partner and the the alternate for the Olympic team.
And so now there's the other on the same team.
So we have an escape from virtually no escape early on.
He also is listening.
Yeah, offensive enough.
He got to drop his level off of the over and under tie so things are great there.
Sanderson Partners after Bernd Leno.
Just really Yeah.
There is the first time we've seen anybody get an angle, right?
There's takedown That's that's a big takedown right here up against the All American.
Of course.
Look, Luke, he comes right back.
All right, 56 seconds left.
That's important.
Escape for Lucky to get.
Next score 3 to 1 and escape by Berlin.
In this period, a stall warning against the Iowa wrestler Loopy, then a takedown to Firmino, then an escape.
Well, here's a scramble situation.
And Bernd Leno is just kind of put himself in a nice shot here.
Nice finishes.
Oh, he's just pop his head up.
He pops his head up.
He's going to piggy back.
Thoughts on that?
That's, you know.
Oh, Oh, I don't know.
That was that quick?
Yeah, I don't know what that one that was down.
But you know what?
When you come to a darker Hawkeye Arena, sometimes it is situation here we see Luke Key, Bernd Leno on the back in this situation as we go through the action here, you see that he's got plenty of time to be able to score with this.
And certainly no, stop wrestling here.
He's just clinging and he stopped wrestling and that's what gave him takedown.
But I'd say that the issue here that Coach Sanderson has is as soon when he called the two, did he give a reaction time to Berlin as we keep going through this.
All right.
Which I will cover.
Okay.
Now he pops his head up, then he gets the two.
Okay.
One, I don't know.
The score is 5 to 3 in favor of.
I was looping 6 to 3.
So Berlin has got to get on the offense right now.
And I think that's what Berlin, his problem is, is he hasn't been on the offense.
He got that first takedown in the stall warning and he stopped wrestling, whereas we talked about earlier this match were lucky is the type of guy who gets stronger and stronger as the match goes on.
Yeah, and we've seen Bernd Leno fade.
Yes, we have.
And that's been a theme.
I got my one takedown.
I'm going to stop wrestling, try to win 3 to 2.
And you just can't do this at this league.
This level in front of this crowd, crowd is going to expect more in the rivalry, expects more of you than that.
But in less than a minute and a half left in the last period of this match at £174 of scores, Iowa three, Iowa State zero after Perry's win over Paulson at 165 and now at 174, the Iowa wrestler wins sixth.
Third is leading 6 to 3, looking over Bernd Leno with a little over a minute left the aggressor.
Be lucky right now.
Yeah, And you'd expect that he's if he just marches into it.
You know, there's only one time where an athlete was able to get to the corner and that was Bernd Leno on a on a single leg shot to Lucky's lead leg.
His left leg at the six three lead.
Look, he doesn't have to necessarily go after him the way he did before.
But are you thinking bonus points for your team?
This is a chance for you to open it up and be a hero here.
I shot with his head down at the edge.
Lucky really does a nice job of wearing the guy's head down.
Coming off 30 seconds now has got enough horsepower there.
Laughs.
Well, it's just one and done.
All right.
You're one.
You get to the the angle you actually make your shot and your shoelaces are flat.
You can't there's nothing else left.
You got to continue to drive with your legs.
Oh, this is why I'm lucky as an all American.
He's a plugger.
He keeps coming after you.
Yeah.
And like you said, he's he's won some big matches before.
And this is a big.
I don't understand that call.
You make a call.
Yeah, it was back points, but lucky.
Lucky did a nice job there.
Constantly got stronger during the course of the match that he did and came from behind.
And I think you know it was also important that match once he got taken down immediately came back with the escape and I think that just set the tone for the rest of the match.
I agree with you, Jim.
Eric Lucky, a great victory here for him.
6 to 4 takes the Hawkeyes to a60 lead.
Not unexpected.
They certainly were expected to be ahead six.
So after the first two matches, I think this is a £484 here where Jake Bonner, the freshman, one of the freshmen that I a redshirt freshman that Iowa State has that they're so high on and and wrestling.
Philip Kenney These two wrestled last year during Barnard's redshirt year had a little bit of head butt action.
Katie head butted him, got disqualified, and it left Varner with a scar.
Yeah.
There's some debate on whether how big that scar was.
I mean, Stadium of Cool said it was six stitches and the registrar followed up with it was six inches.
He just wanted to get that rivalry stoked a little bit.
But Varner, a brutal, talented wrestler and, he's considered by many the best of the best of these six freshmen.
I mean, he's so highly touted and he's a he's a real pinner and we left him over.
But yeah, both wrestlers are out here and and Katie is is a difficult wrestler Grassley's got big strong set of legs he shorter stockier wrestler and Varner is going to try to work has had a little bit but again this is a tough situation to put the freshmen and while you're there we've got to go out there some time though.
And look, they're both freshmen.
Yeah, exactly.
And Varner.
Yeah, Bakersfield, California.
And there's not many that can go out to California and win two state championships in California.
It's a big state, and he's one of them that did that.
And he, Gail Sanderson says you better have a strong neck to wrestle this guy because he's a been known to wrench it a little bit just with a half.
NELSON And so known as a pinner Katie the freshman also four from Vernal, Utah.
And Katie is a is a real solid wrestler.
He's two he's moving his legs really well in this match.
I mean, he's moving his feet is getting keeping grip position and then you see Varner is also working that collar tie warning on the Iowa wrestler Kenny Stone.
And then Varner got another shot in right after that.
Now it's just he's just taken ground.
He's got that collar tie.
You can see those fingers right up on the top of his collar.
He's making them work.
Making them work.
And Katie is basically staying there in a pretty square stance.
I don't know if you want to call it a stall call there, but there's a nice shot attempt here by Katie Hamilton.
Let's go a little more than half a minute left.
There's no score here at £184, but there's the score in the meet and that's Iowa six Iowa State zero after two matches, ten total.
And we're practically a full house today at Carver Hawkeye Arena for this match as close to 15,000 here today Jim.
Absolutely.
Playing 13 to 14 easily.
And that, you know, it's just it's great to be it's great to be back in this environment again where, you know, both coaches are putting such importance on this match that we probably probably haven't seen in a while.
Well, they didn't waste any time showing how they felt about it in that first overtime match, either end of the first period at hundred and £84, the score is zero zero between Katy Philip, Katy from Iowa and Jake Varner from Iowa State.
Second period.
Kelly Here we go.
Varner already ranked number five in the country this year, and it's high praise when you come out as a freshman in the first half of the season.
Usually don't get anything like that until after the Midlands.
Yeah, exactly.
Hardware escape for Varner, you leads now 1 to 0 with that escape.
There I will.
Wrestler Phillip Keddie has been warned for stalling as well.
Jake Yeah, this is, this is an opportunity for Keddie here to to take this match over.
He's got to be offensive, I think too.
Because you mean Varner know for Keddie to caddie.
He's got to go after him here.
And that because of this match is on his feet.
He's got a minute and a half left because if he goes in the down position, that's one of Varner strengths actually.
Good point.
And so and that's why you see you see him answering the call.
He dropped his level.
There's another drop shot here by Varner, stalling all right.
That's when you see that situation there.
I really got to tip my hat to Kenny in that situation.
He knew what the pressure he was under.
And we're going to see a little bit of that right now with Varner in the top position.
He tried to create action on his feet.
Varner got water for stalling, came in on a counter shot.
Good single leg.
Good call, Good action here by both wrestlers.
I think that's a good judicious use of the stall warning.
That's right.
You know, that that didn't affect anything right there.
One guy got warm, the other got it going at one Varner on top with a30 lead and escape and a takedown trying to break Kenny off his base.
Kenny staying strong on the bass.
Well, if you're the Iowa State wrestler, you certainly want to keep him down.
But if you're a wrestler, you can't get up there.
You see the nice single leg finish by Varner, 43, the Iowa State wrestler.
You still stay on top, even if you've been warned for stalling.
Oh, and one thing Kenny cannot do here is just drop his hand.
If he stays active, maybe he gets a warning on Varner.
He's not active enough right now, though, to warrant the stall.
Call that hard.
So you're saying that Kenny needs to move ahead?
He might move in enough, but neither is Varner.
Neat numbers, not movement.
But he's just going to cover on him.
But I think it Kenny will move a little bit more there.
He might have got water first off the bar, first Alpha, which is just an escape there 1.30.
Varner leads and he comes on top.
It's Kenny's opportunity to get away.
Still make something happen.
Both wrestlers have been warned.
You hear Kevin hand the official remind the wrestlers of that escape three one score.
Varner, the Iowa State wrestler, has riding time here.
The onus is on Kenny here to create action.
He's got a stall warning on Varner, but Varner seems to be pushing forward a little bit.
Well, he's keeping the center of the mat pretty well.
T He is.
And he's got that collar just tied as he does lose with that collar.
Time for what kind of most need think that Kenny should be making here?
Right forward.
Just go forward.
Take territory, make make the freshman.
But you are to make him look bad.
Maybe get that stall warning, tie the match up still in the match.
Tighter and he's got to work hard take territory technically Varner has got a41 lead going forward, and now it's a four to lead because Varner has just hit this going.
That's one point penalty.
And here comes the crowd and look.
Whoa, whoa, That's great.
Russell Right down the three Down with Mike Kenny.
Great job of keeping position by on exactly who created the angle there.
And Kenny did what he had to do.
He went after it.
He heard the crowd.
He want to respond to that.
Now he's got to continue to work his all back in this match.
3 seconds left.
It's still a match.
Now, you see that physical style in the top position from Jake Varner.
Kenny, he's not coming up.
Got the head stuff.
This is the position that Varner wanted to get in a little earlier.
But to his credit, he didn't let him get there.
And Varner is going to win 5 to 2 with Brad in Time 62 and put three points on the back.
His battle with Russell's would be fun to watch these guys develop in their programs.
Jake Varner, the winner.
You're looking at him freshman.
He's already one one in Garver Hockey Arena.
He won it, sealed it with this takedown at the end, and he just controlled the tie so well and then had Kenny basically shooting through the tie to feel it coming all the way.
He was able to get the angle.
Jake Varner puts Iowa State on the board to score.
Now, Iowa City, Iowa State, three after three matches.
Now we head into 197, the fourth match of the mix.
And it's again and the wrestlers are Curt back is undefeated for the Iowa state cyclones and Dan Erickson, a five and one record sophomore and back us a senior.
And this is what Becker should be doing and he has done starts fast.
But whether or not he moves ahead and scores like he's capable of, it's been questionable the last couple of years.
Well, he's off to a fast start here with a nice low ankle pick on Erickson and, you know, riding pretty tough in the top position.
And this is probably one of the more talented wrestlers that Iowa State has had in years.
And you mentioned fast start, Tim.
He started off as a here's an ankle pick.
Let's watch this real quick.
Comes to the head comes right to who does that look like his coach.
And I'll tell you what you were talking earlier, speaking of his coach, he has been different as a head coach than an assistant coach.
Just watching him.
Yeah, he's he's it's his game is his deal right now.
You know, he gets to he gets to set the agenda and I think that's a nice shot by Erickson coming through he here by Erickson got caught but back is an awkward right into him and that's what we talking about he's a senior fifth year senior now you let that happen, right?
He just dropped right into it and he's not even out.
He has wrestled a whole bunch of 97 pounders yet.
There's a different level of strength there.
And he's an £84 that's moving up course.
The making room for Varner.
They're a stronger team with Kurt Marcus up at at 97 gets up here comes back is out the back door and reversal so he just goes out he's got great field great scrambler back as a senior as we talk about Blair Academy prep school of teammate of Mark Perry's and he has an issue career of 80 and 24 and all-American as a freshman but not the last couple of years.
He's a again, he was this number two seed.
His sophomore year, the number seven seed his junior year, and walked away from that tournament not placing.
And I think that that's going to be a real challenge for the coaching staff here to keep him up and keep him going.
And, you know, there's a lot of stuff he's left on the table in his scramble situation here.
Again, Jalen Erickson is not taking a backseat anymore.
And I think I think the Iowa coaches have gotten in his head.
Is it you keep this pace high, you just don't know what's going to happen.
And so far, that's exactly what's happened.
Well, I'll tell you what, if he wears on back us and stays on top, I wouldn't want to be back underneath him because Erickson could the iron bars on the cradle attempt there.
And again, Marcus unnecessarily putting themselves in situations that were you know, there's there's you know, high risk no reward for that.
Well.
Erickson not maybe the talent that Bacchus is or yet shown it, but he's got a gas tank.
He's tough on top.
And he's showing right now that he knows what it means to perform at a high level here at Carver Hawkeye.
Well, this would be huge for the Hawkeyes if he walks away from this match, winning it and he's doing it, kind of.
The recipe here is 37 air.
Marcus does a spectacular but he didn't get this game.
Yeah because he had a going for one he's going for the two and he'll end up getting he got his sheet back and Jim coming back in his mind needs to say this can't happen, have to win this game.
Yeah, well he's thinking, oh, I don't know what he's thinking.
All right.
But I have to guess it's if I got 14,000, let's show you how many flashy things I can do here.
And that's it.
6 to 6 at the end of the first period, very active, first period between Bacchus and Eric.
He'll his young coach into an old coach real quick that keeps up Hey Hey Erickson sophomore from Eagle, Idaho.
So your high school said he's just a 19 and 19 500 record last year.
Here we go.
Now, one overall big opportunity here in front of the home crowd or Dan Erickson.
Oh, that's great.
Erickson I think this is where Coach Sanderson would like to see the match go deep.
He's got that ankle pick and Erickson of the Nice Job.
Looks like he was caught back in the line with Russell.
Looked like he was caught there on that two ankle picking.
Did a nice job of working out of that.
Erickson got a little bounce in his step.
Yes, he does.
And like I said, we've seen him wrestle.
We know one thing.
He's got a gas tank on him.
He doesn't tire.
He'll keep coming at you.
This would be a huge win for the Hawkeyes if he can pull something out here.
Yeah.
And just like the last match, you see that the Iowa State wrestler is really going heavy on Head Start working that down.
That's all.
That's the Iowa State wrestler doing that training that Erickson is 7 to 6 in favor of the Iowa wrestler Dan Erickson over Kurt Backus.
Oh, Erickson has to do more of that, pass that elbow down.
Oh, work off that elbow and try to create action.
Here's an opportunity for him to do it.
They didn't feel comfortable at the time.
Erickson's unranked get out of here and back is ranked number six again.
Oh, snap situation here.
There's both wrestlers with tiny chains heads up, but there's a lot of action going on here.
They're trying to pass the elbow, pass that elbow by and then dropping off the shot, drop into a shot.
There's another attempt to turn it off.
Well, by Erickson, you see how he stuffed his head all the time running down in the second period, the score, 7 to 6.
It was tied going into this period and Erickson got a shape.
Now, Marcus will have his opportunity to go down.
Are you going?
Hey, Hey.
You not riding time?
Not really a factor.
Oh, okay.
Tell me it's an attack here, gentlemen, we go now to orbit.
It's on 27 set, but it covers him in the right to his sit out.
Erickson riding pretty hard now.
A chance to feel hands and work his lasso here, sucker.
What does escape for badgers Makes the score seven seven It's all tied up Minute 40 left shot comes in by air time He's here behind the hips He's got.
He's got a deep stance.
Watch the roll three And he did He didn't fall for that Roll three to the back.
This is trying to set up that little cow catcher role.
I want you to look.
You come to too hard, Willy.
Settle back, table the score writing time.
Not really a factor at this stage, but he's going to try to keep him down as long as he can in this situation.
This is just a huge, huge match.
Here's the double leg.
Now watch back is trying to throw his feet in into him.
Let's just keep it close.
Now he tries to roll through you keep those legs tucked tight to your chest and go all the way through with it.
Keep your head up, hips down.
Get your two.
Here we go.
Score 9 to 7 in favor of Dan Erickson.
Just good basic wrestling.
That's again, in a strength position right now.
Picking up all Granby roll situation one and one plenty of time in this match 9 to 8 score good action.
Well now come on back it needs to draw up on five years of the Iowa State Wrestling Room for this moment right here.
Now, Dan Erickson doing a tremendous job here for the Hawkeyes, trying to get the fourth win in a row after that first passing, he passed the elbow throw.
That was a classic example of and he caught Markus napping on the tire.
How's the elbow as you again, the more aggressive wrestler winning?
Well, I'll tell you what, and that surprises me.
But it's a deer in the headlights look for back here.
He's had it before.
He's seen a couple of national tournaments out of them and it's the same thing.
So Coach Sanderson's got a lot to work with here.
So, yeah, this is an extremely talented wrestler.
Just finding ways to lose matches.
Got an opportunity.
8 seconds left.
What's your best shot?
What's your go to shot?
Hugely huge win.
What we seeing in the opening somebody that's had an average career to this point the big upset the rivalry is back Dan Erickson people will remember that name those types of things happening in this rivalry, his passing the huddle getting the angle.
It's a great job of finishing up there.
And he went up 11 to 9.
The Hawks go up on the Cyclones, 9 to 3, and now we go into the fifth before we take a break at halftime following this match and stay tuned for an important announcement following this match.
Dave Zabriskie, the heavyweight for Iowa State.
He beats Erskine and Matt Fields driver Paul Fields Field, certainly the favorite here, ranked number four in the nation.
You know fields that great career coming out of high school.
He's the junior national champion in freestyle as I have.
You know, he's had Marco to contend with.
And now Cole Conrad shows up and some great heavyweights in the weight class, but he's not getting that kind of a that battle for the best of the rest, so to speak, as you go after it.
And I know the coaches are real high on him.
Heck of a competitor ran cross-country in high school.
Matt Fields did just to stay in shape for Slater because he was at the school faster than the rest of the guys.
Yeah, I don't know why they wouldn't want to.
Don't want to get in a fight with that cross-country.
But you know, he has had a difficult time staying healthy here at Iowa and I don't know, a nice single leg here by Fields.
And he steps up good like finish here, comes around the waist.
No points yet up here.
Nice job by Zabriskie here.
No points yet.
Oh, I thought he scored there but he's got to cut it somehow.
Very good.
Cuts the corner to field markers.
Go get two points for Matt Fields right away here in the first minute of the first period of this match.
Let's take a look at that.
Finished their circles back into the mat touch the corner drives across like to see him get off his knees there.
But he's able to do a lot of that, which is with his upper body strength.
But boy, we're going to see the job.
And it just appears to be a lot of brute strength there.
Jim, go.
You know, have killed heavyweight weight class in the last few years, just had some excellent athletes in it.
And that has had to go up against some of those guys.
And sometimes you don't see that at heavyweight the tour until you go into his junior or senior year.
But you're right, he look like he's got quite a bit more horsepower at this stage.
That's we were just looking at the Sanderson brothers, Cody Sanderson.
Matt said, Come to Kale's right on the picture that you just saw was a two time NCAA runner up for the Cyclones and now the associate head coach.
His brother.
And it feels right here.
Top plug in.
Now, this time feels well, that's a referee.
Kevin, can call stalling They're not you know and I think that that's that's why I don't like to see if I'm in the top position.
I don't let the referee dictate what you're going to do here.
You might be in a match later on.
You call him for stalling and you know, you need to continue to ride a guy.
You need to continue that strategy.
But in this situation, I think Fields feels comfortable with the speed that, you know, I'm sure that's something that the coach to be talking to him about.
If it's your best interest to ride, then you just drive.
You better job right?
We're in the fifth match of the at the meet here at Carver Hockey Arena between Iowa State and Iowa.
Iowa leads 9 to 3 in the heavyweight match and is going to score is 2 to 1 in favor of fields after this match.
We'll take a break and we'll come back to the last five matches.
We end at 157 today.
It sure had an exciting start, 165 Mark Perry was a winner in overtime.
Travis Paulson And then the all American, Eric Luke.
He defeated David Myrtle.
And here we go, cover.
And Iowa State got on the board with Jake Varner defeating Philip Keddie and Dan Erickson, the big upset beating the all-American Kurt Beck as well.
Iowa, 9 to 3 had some great memorable matches here so far in the first match at 165 was just no thrill packed with Paulson getting off to the early lead off the score.
Good deals in this match and never haven't seen Zabriskie Russell so I don't you know didn't know what to expect and I think that the coaching staff at Iowa might be expecting more than what they're getting from feels right now as far as you know getting extra points.
Well, yeah, I would say this Zabriskie isn't flashy, but, you know, he's keeping pretty good position now.
There's a technique that would probably work on a lot of guys.
But one the thing that he doesn't want to do is the same thing back is good.
If Fields let some brisket hang around, it takes it down to where anything can happen.
Right?
Risky on the edge feels basically countering with his upper body.
I think about Zabriskie.
He's a he looks like he's a gamer.
I mean, he knows why he's out there.
He's out there to try to win.
But Tim, he was controlling the tie in that situation and Thiel just shot through it.
I mean, there's not much he can do.
And the guy who breaks through your best ties physically, you know, this is right here.
Zabriskie has a dry state, has a collar tie to the side that Fields likes to shoot.
His single and feels more than likely when he goes after it, shoot right through that collar tie.
52 score.
In this score, it's generally doesn't happen.
That's the strength I was talking about.
But you put it, that's the speed that Fields has at heavyweight and that's what makes him the number four ranked heavyweight.
Now, I think again, the crowd expecting more here, looking at the size mismatch, the strength mismatch, this kind of work.
You mentioned Zabriskie being a gamer.
He dropped in on a shot because that was the right thing to do off of that action.
On fields having been worn for stalling.
Not a bad strategy by Zabriskie to keep the attack on as you said, keep pushing forward, move forward.
Another shot.
And I think he's got the official thinking about it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He's well, he's got people thinking about just holding position right now as opposed to putting more of a lead up right away for three Iowa, I would have been one for stalling, but for here we go and go sit out, turn in situation.
Okay Looks like the bank helps a little bit.
Speaking of heavyweights, one of the assistant coaches in Iowa was hand former wrestler for the Hawkeyes.
And I see his his responsibility.
It's to keep the other coaches out of the middle of the mat during the match.
He's to get back coaches to get back coach there is no question I've been watching me doing a good job.
What do you do for of course, you can pick both those guys out and the throwing arm and they're not going to be in for fight, but it pretty might be what you're told to do for get cut out.
Come on.
You've been.
We go, Zabriskie Man.
Pretty impressive here with his you know, just hand fight and again a match where he's a then the underdog and we'll see what Fields does here.
I think this is an opportunity for this crowd to get involved.
You hear them, you know, they want their guy to do a little bit more than what they've seen out there.
So far.
The score is 5 to 3.
And really what we were talking about earlier, a takedown with 10 seconds left and right and take that in overtime for Zabriskie.
It's only a minute three riding time so he'll a race that if he takes off and now he's got a point now a takedown at the end wins it has it seems like a long ways away.
But you're right Exactly right.
I mean, he's in the position to win this match.
He's where Erickson was in the last match.
He's in a position to win it.
And he won in a match he shouldn't have won.
Obviously, Field should win, have this in great control, but he does not.
No easy wins in this so far here situation for him to go.
And he didn't go he looked like he had the tie he wanted, but he didn't fire off.
So there's another situation where, you know, Zabriskie is legitimately lowering his level and making an effort to score.
He did exactly what he's doing is getting the benefit of the doubt here.
He got the benefit of the doubt there.
Yeah, I like that.
It was good.
Call up the now it's a situation where Matt Fields leading five four with riding time you know where he's your go to shot It's like picking up a tree trunk right there but not getting the style points he needs in front of a statewide audience that he'd like to see.
And yeah, and he's got 3 seconds of riding time and nothing in here going on.
He knows he is hanging on.
Does he have it now?
Just couldn't quite break through that hit his defense but his game effort here it was by Zabriskie but Fields wins six five with riding time Got it riding time point too much early horsepower in that match and now fields probably the favorite in that match comes away with a big win.
Well let me add the five matches here and the score is Iowa 12 and Iowa State three.
We'll be back with more college wrestling in just a moment.
Football fans Welcome back to Carver Hawkeye Arena, where it's 12 to 3.
The Iowa Hawkeyes over.
I would say this feels familiar right here, putting my arm around Dan Gable that we've been entertained and watching Dan and his new role as a head assistant for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And Dan, we've got a full house here tonight.
We've got great wrestling action.
This is what it's all about.
Certainly is.
This is what it's been about and it's what it's going to be about in the future.
Yeah, I was supposed to be staying low key over there, but I got a little bit of control.
Maybe I should go back here because this is fun here, too.
But that's tough over there.
Do you feel the same way over here?
Don't get.
Don't kid us.
Yeah, I mean, Dan, we know you got to get back and give your wisdom to the team.
The whole bit, but this is what it's about.
Iowa public television, what it's all about.
And this year, this time of the year, every year we get a chance to tell the people how they can pledge and help us.
It's important, isn't it?
Absolutely important, especially because of this new era between Iowa and I would say.
And, you know, you saw what you and I did to the Hawks the other night.
So it's you know, it's the three big institutions.
They're looking good as long as, you know, Division three.
So that's why I got my check here right now.
And I'm telling you, I hope the people match it and put few more zeros on.
It's only for a thousand bucks.
But I'll tell you what, we'll take that Tanner, that 100 or whatever thousand that that'll come in there.
But no, I'm, I'm proud to be a part of this.
And I just hope that we keep the entertainment going here.
It's been great.
You know, I could tell tell us a little bit about this.
The what's the most satisfying thing about coming back to the man?
Well, I think the most satisfying thing is when you walk in the arena, you've got all these people and then when the kids go out and perform, I don't think either side hasn't performed.
There's been some butterflies and some kids maybe getting tired too quick, whether it be one our way in there, you just not being nutrition or just the atmosphere.
But that's what it's all about.
This prepares you for the end of the season.
Fry it.
I'm so glad to see both coaches basically stating that this is an important meet.
All right.
It makes all the difference in the world.
The fans show up and everything else.
And these these coaches have both stated that.
And of course, we've been talking about that a lot.
We can't let this go in.
Of course, Iowa public television has always been a part of that.
31 years I'm going, I got to coach.
All right.
And take or keep your chin.
All right.
All right.
All right.
Dan Gable, the coach, he's taught a lot of wrestlers how to do it.
Okay.
We're letting you invest in and we're showing you how to do it.
Write your check.
And, you know, Dan said something really important, Jim.
$10, $25, $100, $300,000, $10,000.
Whatever it is, it's important.
Iowa Public Television.
Well, wrestling is what we're known for in this state.
There's other sports that obviously draw more at different times.
And, you know, we know where we stand as far as that goes, but it's really what we're known for.
We've got treasures in this state, you know, with the guy that was just sit in this seat a little while ago.
He's he's he's an absolute Iowa treasure.
Tom Brand's Carl Sanderson.
Same thing with this.
These programs are going in the direction that that we like to see.
And we want to continue to be a part of bringing that to you.
And so you're sitting there at home, which we know that the excitement of this thing is there's a lot of people at home.
It isn't like somebody is not going to notice what's happening, but get out here and support us here.
It makes a huge difference.
Well, it makes all the difference because Iowa public television is viewer supported and friends of Iowa public television, friends of college wrestling.
That's you kitchen culture.
You get yeah, you get yourself a mug and for your contribution.
And of course, the Iowa State people want to see a cardinal and gold mug there.
There's a little bit more black and gold.
But you know, you've got it right there.
Here go.
All right.
Got it in there.
But no, it's it's really important.
And we're really glad that you've tuned in today.
And Jim, let's talk a little bit about the match so far.
Well, loved the intensity of it.
Seems like every you know, the guy who probably wasn't favored in each match came out and wrestled and challenged the guy to beat him in this environment.
And, you know, I would have given Iowa State probably being favored in maybe two of those weight classes.
The upset at 97 is huge.
I mean, that that might send Dan Erickson's career to another level.
He's certainly going to be remembered in this audience here as that.
So beating Kurt back as is is not easy.
And generally Kurt Mack is helps out in that process.
And I think that probably happened today.
Well, I'll tell you what I thought it was a great first match to start out with.
And then I thought Travis Folsom showed lot as he came out to meet Mark Perry head on.
How about that?
But I'll tell you what, I think Mark Perry showed a little bit too.
Well, Mark, he refused to lose.
Yeah, he he now he's so many ways to beat.
He's got that nice duck under that it was single leg shot that he has.
He's got the excellent skills in the top.
He's very difficult to ride, but I think he to be a little bit concerned about also coming out there with that freight train double and actually being behind by three points a late in that match with those scrambles.
But you, Mark Perry is the leader of this team.
He is the leader of this team.
And we saw him go down to Dallas, Texas, in the following night, come up.
And Russell, you and I, you know, he's he's got what it takes.
He shows leadership.
And and, you know, we don't hear as much from him anymore because of Dan Cable's now back and Tom Brands is now the assistant coach and does not the head coach excuse me for the slip, but the that's good.
He doesn't have to be the star anymore, that the coaches are now back to where they should be in the stars and.
Well, you speak of the stars right there.
I want to go back a minute.
You are the stars right now, you the viewers.
You're the stars of Iowa Public Television, College wrestling.
When you write your check and you help us out, I'm serious about that.
It can't get done without you.
And, you know, the last few years you have responded to our request.
That was great.
Yes, you have.
I mean, and the other thing, too, is that you saw the program we did on assignment Iowa, featuring both coaches, those that types of things don't get done for this sport unless you folks step up and, you know, lead you to the website.
Look at the extended interviews that we did with both coaches, one on one with with me.
And it was just a blast doing that.
But we don't do those things and those things again, don't get done unless you step up and make a difference and let the people know that public television, our public television, that that wrestling is important to you.
So call right now, call Iowa Public Television.
And we have people waiting at the other end of the phone to take your pledge, Terry Shell and Todd Mundt.
And those people are back.
And we got to hear from Mike Chapman a little bit later.
And you make all the difference in the world and we know you're out there, so help us out on the announcement.
It's great.
And as we get ready to wrestle again, I hope that you enjoy the second half of this great nation and the love that the that, you know, I give the phone number.
Yeah, I'm sure it's going to be it's probably on the bottom of the screen.
Right.
Right.
And so and so anyway, we we've had a big, big crowd here over probably close to 15,000 paid or unpaid.
The numbers, 800 7797000 800 7797000.
And we're getting ready to wrestle now.
And so let's go back to the center of the match.
Thanks for your help.
Okay.
Here we are, 125, £125, Charlie Falk and Nick, Sam and Paul Fenton, Freshman Linebacker Iowa State Sophomore Charlie Fox, Ansley Russell.
Charlie Fall had a tough match against the You and I got off to a slow start.
He looks like he's starting quite a bit faster here against Nick Fan Thorpe here with a nice single leg shot No takedown yet but he's hanging tough Panter nicely did do a nice job of scrambling.
Now he has an underhook working with that nice series.
There.
Faulk getting off to a little quicker start than what we saw when he wrestled Kyle Hanson from northern Iowa.
He lost that match.
Here we go back at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Hey, have it here.
£125.
Getting the breaks here.
Nick Fan Thorpe, Naperville, Illinois, North High School, Naperville.
He's a freshman.
Redshirt freshman, two time Illinois State champion.
Iowa State Charlie Fox kicked off.
Charlie was a four time state champion.
He just got the takedown in Apple Valley, Minnesota, where he's from he was actually an Iowa kid that got to he's from Strawberry Point, Iowa, but he did wrestle at Apple Valley, Minnesota, four time state champion in Minnesota.
Good 3 to 1 match for real powerful grip on Charlie Fall key as a 3 to 1 match.
He grabs something that's usually real difficult to get away.
Fan Thorpe, a pretty good scrambler likes to attack low down.
One thing I remember about Charlie Fox two years ago he wrestled as a true freshman.
He just didn't have the horsepower.
Yeah, and now he's had that opportunity.
I know that he's dealt with some injuries, too, but he's built himself up and to the point where he's just got a little bit more horse now.
Yeah, that's makes a big difference of that weight class, too.
As you.
I wrestled at the smallest weight class, believe it or not, at one time in my career, I thought that get me up to the higher weight classes, I can compete.
These guys are too quick and they're strong.
Oh, well, there you go.
You got rest yet?
He's working off the wrist tie, but he being Charlie Fall got inside Ty Nice single leg attempt by Van Thorpe.
But again he's having a hard time finish it because he's got his wrist tied up there.
Let's sequence there by by fall.
You're looking at Carver Hawkeye.
Tonight's attendance paid attendance 13,000 thousand 732.
As Dan Gable was quick to point out in the break, that's paid attendance.
And if you've ever been around the Hawkeyes when they're travelers, there's probably a thousand hangers on there.
Probably get it here.
Well, this place is close to full, and it's the fifth largest wrestling crowd in Carver Hawkeye Arena history.
And that's over 20 years out, 1992, my last year coaching here, where they had a 14,000 plus that was the top of about 23.
And let's go.
We're looking at Nick Thorpe there.
And now they get ready to wrestle that time.
We've had five matches in this meet.
Iowa's won four of them.
They're out in front 12 to 3.
Nice high crotch.
Stand by, Paul of the nice job of keeping his head to the inside.
Now we'll see how he shelved it.
There.
Still does a nice job of keeping the head in the battle here.
Tim, as you look at Park's left arm, look at his left arm.
He's trying to get all that crossed at the end and gets that ball rank or possible, if not the far right.
Not that there's nothing there comes around the waist.
The waist won't help.
Now he's got to get to the far, ankle or knee, preferably the ankle and fan.
Thorpe knows that.
I've got to say Phantom does a nice job.
And knowing his position now.
Yeah, he's.
He's a good scrambler.
Knowing the time, knowing the position, the scores 2 to 1 at the end of the first period in favor of I was Charlie Fox fall cat remember earlier in the match and in that situation right there a fall had the opportunity to get close to three takedowns twice here where I was choice.
Okay, here we go.
I were your choice.
Second period.
He's had a hard time keeping Nick.
Dan Thorpe has had a hard time breaking through as far as head, hands, defense when you go first, the first time we're going down here, we go up right down by the stage.
He gets out, he's going down.
Here we go.
All right.
I took the down position, I think.
All right.
It's good grip.
They are three feet here.
Nice job of getting his hips out.
Makes that score two to it.
Remember earlier in this match, the thought that fall cat, at least two takedowns, very close takedowns at Fang Thorpe was able to scramble out of that red ball, tying up that left wrist of his opponent.
Oh well Iowa State wrestler having his wrist tied up.
I know he's not comfortable there, but he's not doing a necessarily a great job of breaking a three off that we're all tied up here, £125 in the middle of the second period of this match, £125 between.
And talking about state from Iowa to wrestle here.
So here you go.
There you go.
He throws drive and through all the other here, minute left, Phantom appears to be a little bit busier now with his shot.
You know there's a shot fall does an excellent job of cutting the corner comes in on a single leg here and that's it.
Yeah.
Nice job.
He was able to finish on the edge of the mat that time again, like we've seen with a lot of these wrestlers actions created and they drop him back on a counter shot.
We call him.
They seem to get their best techniques down on counteraction right here.
Morning on Charlie Falk after he got the takedown, putting the head for two to, but that's for not trying to get him down the mat, hanging on up there.
And so it's a warning.
Charlie, fall for Iowa.
We have another break right there.
But that was just a good job by my fork of taking advantage of the head to the outside shot, cutting the corner on him, dropping on the ankle, getting the shot.
So I get the takedown.
I was a little bit of blood and more.
Iowa, Iowa, looking at Kayla from there.
Okay, here we go.
Come on.
Now, let's go to 759 and 31 four time NCAA champion, Olympic gold medalist, top position fan.
Thorpe was able to get out before, but the different situation here, 20 seconds left, Paul could pretty tough in the top position.
Cantor hand fighting hand, but he's not getting his hips out like a wrestler.
The nice job of lifting him up, staying with that, keeping his grip lock low around his hips right here.
Oh, boy, That's so that was a going against fault for not taking him down to the mat soon enough for the referees to not a popular call.
And so that's one point for Iowa state scores 4 to 3 Iowa but forecast well over a minute writing time.
Now that's just like getting an escape in that situation when you get the start.
But would have been better to have that end escape, though, right?
That's correct.
If you're at state guy Yeah Nice job by Falk now coming up by three Oh this was looking through earlier to match the sea panther five was taken over by kind of breakthrough and get low on the shot but he just hasn't been able to break through Fox pretty tough head hands defense scores 5 to 3 now in favor of Falk who gets an escape minute 20 left in the match and nice shot by nice change side nice change up.
Oh, nice slip.
That's 2.5.
You are.
To tell you what, I like to see what happened there.
Just the technical standpoint shot with one direction.
The next shot came up was just right around the two the other leg.
That's what made that look so easy.
That's a little difficult here as he does not know how much riding time, but he got.
Yeah.
So I don't know if he has riding time or not because no riding time there's no riding time that he had in his early goal.
So 35 seconds in the favor of Paul.
There's a clock.
The writing time on the clock in the arena is not working now, so they're just letting us know how much there is.
And there's 45 seconds right in time for the able wrestler.
Paul, all factor in this and 30 seconds left 6 to 5 for no writing time.
Can't get that shot off and he can't be called four star for the action here by fan talk really coming hard William picked up this pace clock blocking out right now.
Oh wow This is 5 seconds left.
Oh it's good action here that fans are up here.
Paul holding on for a win.
Six two, five and another three points for.
Iowa, very good match.
Good answer.
Both came out fast, but Daniel never gave up.
And I tell you what, he's a good wrestler.
Almost won that for the Cyclones.
Six, five, the winner four here.
You're looking at him right now.
Iowa goes up 15 to 3 as we head to £133.
Well, it's a match where work off.
Maybe it could have put it away in the first period with three potential takedowns that were supported off by good scrambling and and factor of late in that match was able to break through that head hands defense and get a few shots off and and finish them which really closed up the match and showed well for himself.
Now we have 133 Mario Gallen that goes from Iowa senior versus the freshman Nick Gallic and the name sounds familiar he's the brother of last year's NCAA titlist Nate Gallic for the Cyclones.
Mario Gallant Marcus has been in the program and in and out of the program at Iowa.
Russell here as a junior college wrestler, was from Norway Valley.
Greenfield gone there had academic problems last year and didn't like paying to get into the meet the Iowa State meet last year and come back outside to come back out.
And he's been like a man on a mission, according to observers.
And if there's anyone that's taken to Tom Brand's PAC in style, it's him.
Well, that's got to be interesting to hear because Dan Gable just got to tell us there's this bigger than 13,700 because we let a lot of people in.
They didn't let Mario in last year.
It was at Iowa State.
Okay.
Good point.
Ask me there.
Oh, yeah.
He still made to get it sit down.
And he said that was enough.
He was on a mission from that point forward to get back on this team and be on the mat.
Yeah, sure.
He had some friends on the squad covered him.
Oh, nice picture.
By Galvin office.
Oh his game at the cross ankle pick two to nothing gallant that goes it's go and this is out in front of Gallant from Iowa State Estes don't get this done This is where the freshmen tend to struggle here in the down position here you see where he's got his knees better flied out wide.
He's just not really thinking about doing anything offensive here, just to kind of hold in position as Gallant Gallinari is kind of works with him on that tight waist and interest right now As you mentioned, Gallinari Marcus is an Iowa native and wrestled in the high school system here and Nick Gallacher from Arizona is a four time Arizona State champion, Tucson, Arizona, Sunnyside High School right now.
Garland Marcus really putting a lot of pressure on GARLICK the Top Gun for the start of the stalemate.
There was the break for a gallop nice cross ankle pick did that basically his upper body just drove right on this and grabbed it and picked it up off the mat.
You know, some moves you just have a feel for.
And that's that that's one of those ankle pick guys or just they just have that innate feel for when's the right time to go Look he gets at wrist and he's putting so much pressure, putting a lot of pressure, and he's really got a guy like in a tough situation right there because a guy like needs to come up before he gets in there and gets that wrist.
It is.
And this is one of the tougher positions to teach a young freshman is to go ahead and deal with that elbow out to see his left elbows out, his wrist, his in.
That's just putting a saddle on yourself there.
If you don't if you can't battle in this position, this is one of the basic positions that you have to conquer, because generally, you know, you're wrestling against somebody who's much more physical than you and older and refreshments.
All these it these weaknesses get exposed.
All right.
And Galen Marcus is exposed to Nick Gallic senior versus the freshman and he's out front two to nothing with a bunch of writing time at the end of the first period Puts it not so by writing the scoreboard, not working on writing down their ties to this match so far down to 154 shots on radio all day.
I will have a minute, 54 writing time, 40 minutes to that.
Bottom line, I will cover a lot of dominance going on right now.
By Mario Vargas.
Good escape.
There's a good job.
That's the way to keep your elbow out from getting out.
Gets load off the whistle and come up and that tells you how good a job Gallant Marcus was doing.
The top position to just, you know, stay on, stay on top of him and control on top of your feet.
Miguel Marcus just seems to be just a little bit more alert than Angelakos right here.
He's just around Nick harassing him.
You got it.
But so far, Russell, here, this stuff is going out because him ranked number nine, record six and one.
Kalex record is nine and two, therefore not yet ranked.
And as you pointed out, most freshmen earn it this time of the year.
So can we go over another position here?
Referee thinks that there's a stalemate there, but Here's the first full shot by Gallop.
Dornoch has walked off pretty well, got the head and arm wrestle here.
That's what we're doing here.
So don't think that's going to happen as far as wrestling out of that situation.
Both men don't want to give the other the advantage to the team.
Score Iowa 15.
Iowa State three got four down here at 133 with three matches left after this match win.
Look at that referees.
He's got his headway in there score did I just don't agree with that position stay you know he's good get a look see how they're tying up.
I think they're doing all right They're going up like you're saying that you feel the referees a little bit too little too close.
Yeah.
They've all seen to don't be not willing to go ahead and improve their position and I think that's slows the match down, which favors the guy who has the lead and that's Galen Marcus from Iowa one right now.
So here we go again this 147 to 1 minute 57 right in time to get Tanaka's score is 2 to 1.
Now, golly, he likes to be here.
And I'm sure Gallia Marcus knows it wants to get right out from the bottom because Gallic is good on top.
Oh, good hand control.
Yeah, it really was.
He just kept down.
He stayed poised when Galic lifted him up off the ground, stayed poised, kept hand fighting in there.
And then when Gallic brought him down to the mat, he was ready to go ahead and move his hips out.
Ready for one minute.
35 seconds.
135 So 135.
That's almost like a 4 to 1 score at this stage.
Tim So Gallic, if he's going to get back in this match, he's going to do a lot of work and he just doesn't seem to break through.
Gallinari because his head hands defense It does not have anything for him here.
One minute left in the third and last regular period.
Yeah, let's go get him next to Gallic showing that he does, he has good position.
He's a very fine wrestler.
Oh his, his brother Nate one of the best possession wrestlers I think I've ever seen.
And certainly to come out of Iowa State get great position very difficult score on it Oh just nice effort there Tim he made it look like he's going one direction and came back to the single leg.
That's just that's that's great high level that works at any level.
Well and if he can make that work all year long.
One thing about Gallinari because a couple of years ago he was so up and down.
Well, if he can stay consistent here, he's a threat here.
He's it.
He's one of those wild card guys here for this program this year, advancing to levels that maybe not a lot of people expect from this program at this stage, but you know what?
He sometimes you get away for a while and you think about it and you get a little better.
Well, I think that's what's happened.
I mean, you're exactly right.
It's what's happened with that because he has a big win here, 5 to 1 with riding time, 6 to 1 another, three points for the Iowa high going knock us over Galaxy at six one, two, one includes riding to score Iowa 18, Iowa State three.
As we head into the 141 bound match.
I'm looking forward to this 136 for Iowa.
There you look at a gallon of gas starting to throw Iowa here from Iowa State.
You see the freshman he wrestled for, Iowa City West his last two years in high school, grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
This is a special place for him.
Certainly, he had dreams of being here for a big part of his life.
He just didn't know that it was going to be in an Iowa state singlet.
And so here he is against one of the more highly touted recruits of the last five years or so.
Alex Search.
That's who came into the program.
256 and oh, and from high school and he's gotten tougher along the way he's all-American last year.
Well I think a lot of that was expected of Alex sources early in his career.
And and, you know, I remember sitting here watching his first match against Nate Galic and then took Nate Gallup to overtime and and eventual Iowa State national champion and an NCAA runner up.
But Alex versus just didn't have the national tournaments.
I think it had kind of faded at the end of the year.
I think this year coming back here after placing in that tournament, I think there's a lot of upside for him.
Good physical wrestler, real strong.
It's going to be a lot for Mueller to be able to handle him off this match.
That's a good situation.
Wow.
Good scramble by both men.
Yeah, I get that.
You know, I'd like to see that both male coach is going to be pleased with that exchange.
Great talent on the mat right now.
And search us to just add on what you said.
It's kind of redemption time for him from a standpoint up here in the big crowd and to say I want to be one of the best wrestlers, this program scene.
That's why I came here.
And he's not there yet.
Now he's not there yet.
And and he's got an opportunity to and this is great opportunity.
You're going up against a redshirt freshman to go ahead and show what you're about.
But he gets caught in these situations here a lot, Tim, where he did it with always with everybody.
Russell's always seems to get locked up right there and and where he can't be as offensive as he is, he could be with his with his physical prowess.
They allow sometimes lesser wrestlers to stay with him long into that match because of that.
And he has a difficult time building leads.
Bob Mueller is a great young talent.
But as we said, he wrestled his junior and senior year at Iowa City West, and he grew up in the Cedar Rapids area, always dreaming about being a wrestler at this level and and been around this Iowa program.
And I'll tell you what, he made his mark in freestyle, but he beat Joe Johnston at 145 freestyle just last spring.
And Joe Jackson, two time all-American, who graduated from Iowa last year.
So Mueller has a lot of talent right now.
Coach Sanderson is pretty high on Mueller.
I haven't had that many opportunities to see him, but it just great awareness in there.
And yeah, it has done a fairly good job to this point to Alex search.
This is strange.
Well, this is his first big college test.
We're talking about Mitch Miller, Iowa State, and the score is zero with Alex searches and one of those guys too that that didn't have you know veterans auditorium down there in Des Moines didn't have all the great matches that he'd like to have.
You know you always heard about him.
I think he ended up winning one title.
And I know he got beat his senior year, which had to be just crushing for a guy of that talent.
But stick it out.
He was a three time third place finisher.
Yeah.
You know, he won it as a junior three times.
Was he third?
So he had a lot of heartbreak.
Yeah, at the Vets auditorium.
So you're not going to like the pace up here.
Gentlemen, let's go to how already rated 11.
That's.
That's our cover positive.
I believe success rate is 39.
Yeah.
And I guess it depends on what polls you look at one point success makes the score one zero now for the Hawkeyes, Hawkeye, Bowe.
I think that was really important for success for his cause to get out early in that match.
And you know, you're going up against a freshman.
You really want to test him down on the mat.
And if you get out with, you know, two or 3 seconds into it, you only have to ride a guy for a minute and 3 seconds and you got your riding time point.
And it looks like Mueller's been very tough to break through his head hands.
DEFENSE So you're.
Mueller You got to be thinking takedown at this stage.
I mean really have to just what's my math strategy?
I really got a score Both wrestlers protect the middle of the mat.
Well now that happens one zero searches go ahead.
So the search is from Griffith, Indiana, Griffith High School, as we say, who's undefeated in high school, 236, you know, four time state champion Tom Steyer.
You know, now I'm looking at both athletes vision here.
I can see Mueller is looking at that the lower body it and and surface is looking at the upper body.
You see that you just look at the vision that both athletes are trying to get out there.
And this tells me that Mueller is looking to get a shot off and this looking for the tie.
It puts Paul Silk.
It would look at that vision right there.
Okay, good looking, too subtle.
Little difference.
There you go.
First hand.
Who goes in 30 seconds left This second period around £141.
Let's go, team scores.
Iowa, 18, Iowa State, three three matches left in the meet, including this one.
There's a nice shot by crowd.
Good heavy body on top by Miller and Mueller's got an ankle but that off to the far ankle turns versus got the ankle that counts That's right wrinkles best finish in a single leg ever invented and he scored 10 seconds left in the period Big points right there and I think that's a situation where Buehler had to go back and look at that again.
He put himself there.
He tried and jumped over to kind of panic out as opposed just wrestling like it was no force that surface to get the action.
Let's go.
That was like 6 seconds.
Oh, now for like, oh, he might find himself.
He looks like he wrestled kid wrestling.
That looks a little bit like Alex is.
Don't do it.
You have imitations going on in wrestling rooms all the time and Alex thought this was body styles maybe need the opposite of Mark Perry's trying to do some of the same thing that you see Mark doing so successfully.
Let's go.
Let's go at the waist, an ankle tied up, driving low cross searches, the riding time on.
Now he's got to take down at the end of the second period.
And now he is really racking up the riding time as he rides Miller Yeah.
And then Larry, over and again, here comes the freshman issues here, elbows out, wrist in.
You're getting them tied up and you do that, you put a saddle on yourself.
What if I would have done flip flop Circus, as we said?
I mean, he's trying to make a state at the right time for certain style, right in time, secure for success.
Both legs in earlier in the meet that was called as a stalemate and I don't know else it should be called.
I mean, what can you do there now if you're on the if you're the bar guy, you can't you're not even there.
He gets stalemated.
All right.
See some good things from starts is here again.
Getting out early in that match in the second period.
Got an early escape.
I think it's really important for him in his style of wrestling team of researchers to get out in the fast.
There's the escape for Buehler 3 to 1, lots of riding time, so it's effectively 4 to 1, a three point lead with four searches.
With 30 seconds left, he basically for Mueller, he's got to take searches down to his back to score victory here.
Yeah.
And right here if you the coaching circus you'd like to see him.
He had the advantage in that tie right there and just decided to freeze off of it.
Now, right there, you're physically dominant right here.
He's got the advantage in the tie that underhook.
What are you gonna do with that?
Chooses to hang back?
And I know the coaching staff Doug Schwab and Tom Brandes gave will be working on that.
Try to get him the offensive in that position.
Oh.
Oh good man.
Scherzer So winner by three more points of 21 to 3 over Mitch Miller Miles mistake Alex surface in Iowa their seventh victory out of eight matches in two more matches right now go to 149 between Alex Brubaker the senior against Kyler Sanderson 100 freshman the brother of the coaches and stay on punishment in the hot seat is always welcome Alex wonder just a guy who's been kind of a journeyman in the program and found his way through, Coming in strong here, coming in strong with a bear hug and looking for the big day that's up under came out last year and his opportunity he got when Eustace was hurt and Staropoli from Illinois.
And he made a big statement here blunder as you said behind use this fifth year guy put his time into the room, man.
It's just you know, these are the great stories.
Now he's up against Kyler Sanderson and that kind of heritage.
Grundy doesn't come from that kind of heritage.
No, he doesn't.
Which is versus some skill here with his heritage.
Yeah, No change, no chance.
But it's, you know, if you're here, it's Iowa fan and all that.
You're sitting there going, well, how great would it be to beat the coach's brother?
You know?
It just becomes a big issue.
Nice reversal there.
Nice glory.
One thing you're going to get here, I think from both these wrestlers, you're going to they're not going to leave anything in their back pocket.
Oh, here, go.
This is going to be a battle grinder.
A senior from Wilton, Iowa, Wilton High School.
And he's just a he's a banger.
I mean, he comes out there and he wants to make this match physical, I guarantee you that.
Well, he's a fifth year senior.
Yeah, he's got to be that that's his advantage.
He's that that much more mature than than the freshman.
That's good.
That's good.
Here we go.
Three, two two.
Early Takedown by Alex Grinder Reversal by Kyler Sanderson An Escape by Grinder That's the score with 2 minutes left in the first period.
Let's move it.
Move your feet down.
Go.
Nice single leg attempt grinder Basically coming through, trying to roll through.
But Sanderson off that double knife technique there by Tyler Sanderson, the freshman from Heber City, Utah, Wasatch High School and coached by just like his brothers for Sanderson Brothers coached by Steve Sanderson, they're their dad and I. I got to think that that by the time that the killer came around, Steve knew more about wrestling than he knew what the first was.
And you're going to see a lot of technique on this young man did later in his career.
What kind of pressure you think he feels?
Yeah.
Oh, I don't.
I don't think he feels any pressure.
I'd rather.
Oh, beautiful counter shot.
Nice switch to the far leg.
Best finish on a single leg is that far ankle.
Now comes Hart into a cradle.
Yeah.
He set that up really nice.
He's got it.
Well, the grinder just broke it.
I don't think he feels.
I just get the feeling that in the short time I've been around, which hasn't been very much, I went to a practice when we did the taping, that public television special that we did for, the coaches, and he just wrestles with like, like his brother Cale, with Russ's with a lot of joy out there, you know, just being drafted.
What his word took this year, score 6 to 5 in favor of Tyler Sanderson, had a takedown reversal, a couple of skates and anything he can see right now, anything he thinks he can do offensively he's going to go ahead and try to do.
And there's just a horse job right there by a runner.
And now they fight ankles with one second left and that's it.
That's that's close.
Obviously.
Sanderson hanging on the ankles.
Here's that single leg attempt reaches over to the far ankle.
It's that takedown that's the takedown that put him up six four.
Here's the almost takedown that was called the second right?
Nothing yet.
Sanderson reaching for ankles and I think it was close, but I'm not saying it was it was not a wrong call.
But that's the type of things that Grinder has to do.
All right.
I'm going to grab you, freshman.
I'm going to just come at you and I'm a squeeze when I get you.
That's that's got to be his mentality were Sanderson is out there just floating and stinging and you know it's high seven five in favor of kind of Sanderson drivers trying to get their second win of the night Tyler Sanderson brother of the head.
You were just looking at Cale Sanderson snapping oh four.
Oh, nice shot there.
See what the finishes, brother is in.
Has the advantage at this stage.
Yeah.
Hasn't quite got the corner.
Cut him outside.
You just got to take good part of it up to kids with great opportunities here tonight.
And a senior that Rendered Mile has a great opportunity to make a name for himself to do great things.
Tyler Sanderson.
An opportunity to start a great career in a neat way card for Hawkeye Sanderson Up 75, you get to.
Yeah.
Now things are getting a little bit loose for Sanderson.
Oh, who gives up that Taking this can see it.
Just get loose out there.
Control is not really working real well.
And good call.
You know, it just any.
You know, that's the.
That's what we used to call the go home and the gang in the Gibbons family, they always, you know, hit too many those in just going home all championship level time.
10 seconds.
How good That's yeah 20 seconds left.
There's no real riding time involved with 7 to 7.
We've got a tie, man.
And I think that here's a situation where just knowing where you are, man awareness as far as Sanderson goes, come back out.
Let yourself get a new start.
That's too much time.
Just collecting right there on the edge.
I like his pace, though.
I mean, that pace is more important in school when you're sending freshmen out there and he's.
Russ on a high pace and I like seeing that.
And I like that runner's ability to stay with them, too.
These guys are showing me more than they've seen in the previous matches.
They're ready to take opportunity.
11 seconds, 7 seconds on the start, on the top two on the clock.
All right.
Let's get that's something that you have to work on, always knowing what your move is going to be when they're all and those ten, 15 seconds escape situations.
Both guys have to be aware of that because those are scoring opportunities.
Well, Under the Grinder is where he wants to be an opportunity to escape and go ahead and put the pressure.
You're looking at Alex Bryant, the Grinder senior from Wilton, going against Kyler Sanderson with that escape, the Thunder ahead really thunder there not to let Sanderson back into this match to his is his shot just a straight shot no set up but not a good place if you're Sanderson to rest down in there.
But the other option is let him score.
He's not resting.
You just hanging in there using energy and burn clock.
But I think it's important for a runner to go after him If he wants to close out this match, now is the time to do that, as opposed to letting a guy who's used to winning kind of gather himself with minute 30 left in this match.
Oh, there's a goal.
I bet you that there's no let up in Grinder here.
He keeps he's keeping the pressure.
Yeah, just that scramble again.
We'll see how it plays out here.
But not a lot of his again, just a lot of wasted time here on the edge for both guys.
The Thunder wants to do that.
He's got the lead.
Also got riding time and he's the crowd and got the crowd.
15,000.
Yeah.
One way or another this place is whoa Nice job on Tyler Sanderson.
Had one more and he did a good job to get to a position of scoring.
And now he's coming out the back door.
He's got it.
He's got the leg hook.
Now all I got to do is clear is that he's looking for the fall.
If you get the young man who now wants to put himself in that situation, there.
Wow.
Wow.
30 seconds left.
He got he caught the leg back there.
Well, that's a down to now.
If you're an Iowa State fan, you want Tyler to stay on top of them here at the right time.
That's possible.
Right?
Ding time clock.
We have no idea what it is.
All right.
Time He's got the lead.
Tyler Sanderson smiles.
A resounding win.
Yeah, he's got him really tight?
Here.
Oh, what a gutty performance as advertised.
Look, these guys didn't leave anything in their pocket.
Their tank was empty, their tank was empty.
And that's the way you like to see it.
9 to 8.
The winner, Kyle Tyler Sanderson, Alex Grounder.
The and by mistake, the rivalry is back.
And they keep on saying that the level of wrestling here is real high for this time of year because this is an important match for these guys.
Grinder Good job.
Yeah.
And Anderson, good job.
Good job both there as you're looking at the winner scoring a reversal in the last 20 seconds takedown, I mean, a takedown in the last 20 seconds.
What now?
Now the score 21 Iowa and Iowa State six Oh, and now we go to 107, the last match of the day.
Number one ranked Trent Paulson and the freshman.
He's already had a big match in overtime loss to two time all-American Brian Stith from Arizona State.
And so, you know that he can he can wrestle, but Trent Paulson, man alive.
I'll tell you, he's got a great position.
He's had a great career ranked number one.
It's ranked number one.
And I believe he's last year's number one seed going into the tournament.
And ended up getting beat by Iowa's Joe Johnston.
Nice low shot by Ryan Morningstar.
He's moved off the ankle now up a little bit higher on the leg That was just horsepower on Paulson's part.
Now the far ankle, he's got the right finish.
You see how Paulson is moving up to now.
He's call that weight on the hands.
Well, I think it's a correct call.
Rising star whose dad, Scott Morningstar, was a four time state champion.
Rice grew up three time state champion, also went to Lisbon High School.
Devon Best on his feet.
And he just showed why his national junior freestyle champion as well.
There's the escape.
Well, it does now.
The escape for Trent Paulson, Paulson, Paulson, a proven all-American, two time all-American.
And really, I'd call him one of the strongest wrestlers in his weight class as well.
But I don't think Morningstar is going to be a weakling in this weight class.
No.
And Morningstar, to his credit, he wrestles real low and he's not going to make this a real physical match.
He's looking right at those ankles and that's where he wants to be.
He's got, you know, great low ankle shots.
And if he can get in there and he's already showed us, he can score.
That's what he needs to do to get there.
It is nice low shot left, which you and if you're Paulson, you just don't want the match to waste away in this position here where he's hanging in on your leg particularly after you've given up a takedown stalemate by the official 2 to 1 and start in favor of Ryan Morningstar, the redshirt freshman 157 pounder for Iowa County.
And now, now when they start wrestling head to head, that becomes to the advantage of Paulson.
But look how low that Morningstar he's wrestling almost at his middle size, his chest as far as his elevation goes.
Now, Paulson cuts the corner.
This is an advantage position for Paulson.
The nothing left in the freshman does a nice job of adjusting.
That's good job by him because Paulson is usually will take you down from that position after he's cut the corner on you, walk down with 40 seconds left in this first period, this last match of the day in the Iowa State, dual meet Iowa up front, 21 to 6.
They're going to win this meet.
That's just trying to see how many matches they're going to win.
They've won seven Iowa State's, one two.
Number one ranked Trent Paulson.
You're looking at four Iowa State hundred and 57, Carter going against unranked probably soon to be ranked.
Yeah freshman Ryan Morningstar right now what like what I see from Morningstar is just how he keeps that good low position all the way through.
He's a taller young man than than Paulson is, but he does a nice job to stay in low.
But you'll see that people, when they break free from each other, he'll go down low.
But he's very disciplined.
Yeah, I mean, and the way he lowers that level and he's not bending over to get those knees down.
The hips are down.
Second period, 23 seconds later, time comes up right away.
Let's go.
So you start a pretty nice elevator series there by Paulson, who looks like he should probably at least get one off this.
No, let go the ankle.
Maybe be looking for a nap.
Just gets the last game of it ties it up now to two to get ready.
Morningstar will get his opportunity in the last period for his down position.
So we know shots so far for Paulson Ryan I think Paulson is pretty good at is being in that position and then taking that shot with about 1 seconds left and scoring well he operates and vectors.
He'll get the tie up he wants and he'll just blow right through you gold all the way.
It traversed the whole side of the mat.
And I think that what Morningstar is going to be careful is just to keep him keep moving and stay off the railroad tracks.
You know, you don't want to be right into his power and his track.
Paulson Here's here's a power move here.
By height by Paulson wasn't able to pull it off because Morgan starts doing what you're saying.
He's doing a pretty good job of move out.
Yeah.
And he's staying low in that when they break free, you really stays low.
Scores 2 to 2 in this match, second period.
And Morningstar discussed the starting call against Paulson because as you said, he has taken a shot and taken shot.
Morningstar has taken at least five.
Now, I will say this, that the advantage now is just like we've seen in the other matches, is that will Morningstar take the down position where Paulson is going to dominate Russell in the top position in the third period.
If we get to coach, if it remains like this, I probably this early the season I'd send him down for a number of reasons.
Just just so you know, if you ever go again that you've experienced that.
But you know I'm not on that at all.
Dan and I have kind of gone back and forth on that.
I think he wants to you know, the confidence is going to probably have to worry about this more.
I'm worried about whether he can beat him in that situation that we're going to That's why I'm out of a New York time ago and not back in.
Hey, here's the debate.
What is it, Gable out there?
What do you call shot Gable show?
GABLE Yeah, he does.
He says, Do you want to do all right?
He's Gable got up off the chair there and said, What do you want to do?
What do you want to do?
He's like, Don't throw it back at the corner.
He's What do you want to do?
And he took down I like this call this time of year, but Paulson's already been warned for stalling, so he just can't hang in here and just collect riding time.
Calm down underneath the flag.
Oh, he's got quality.
Just not much action going there.
Paulson is coming with the strong finish right.
When we start trying to get his hips out, he gets his hips out, turn the wrong direction, and now he's got to go off.
Also just cut him.
Paulson Just cut it.
I thought in that situation that Paulson stayed with another 15 seconds or so and would have the riding time advantage power shot there passed in round.
Paulson really tough in this situation when he starts battering you really badly.
Yeah.
Oh, you don't know how tough that is with one arm keeping both of his hips and legs away way.
That's just sheer guts right there.
Oh boy.
This is remember this is the number one ranked wrestler at 157 in America, Trent Paulson, the freshman from Morningstar.
And he's in it.
Morningstar.
No star warnings.
He stays low.
What a way to start your career, Carter.
Hot guy, huh?
No.
Right where he is bad.
It is how many guys we've seen.
Number one, ranked defending national champions.
You know, have a hard time crowds behind him.
18 seconds.
The big inside trip.
One of the signature moves not working.
Great footwork by Morningstar.
Look at him move his feet.
Look at him.
Move his feet.
Wow.
Low level shot.
Nice job by Morningstar.
That will be it.
Unbelievable.
Oh, oh, oh.
I think I think we look at that here.
He just saw Dan Gable, Tom Brand's Carl Sanderson about to come to me.
Jim is, I think Carl Sanderson knows where he's at, where he has to go.
Well, he's never brought a team in here, and this is a tough environment to do it.
And no matter what the accolades are, you can talk yourself up as it is as to where your guys really are at this stage.
But when you come into Iowa with this type of environment, it it's a measuring stick.
And here's the coaches reaction at the end of Morningstar beating the number one ranked Fred Paulson.
It looks like purse hold cable down in the booth there something to more the change, the more they stay the same.
Just a great tactical match.
And also, you know, you asked me what do you do you you take the down position and try to score or try to be the guy.
Oh, well, 24 to 6.
That's the final score.
Iowa wins over Iowa State.
