I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
Beginning our big weekend, a triple header of college wrestling on public television.
We're going to tell you about the other two major a little bit, but we want to look back right now, Tim Johnson to six days ago to what we think was one of the most exciting meets we've ever had on public television.
When Oklahoma State came to Iowa Southern, well, the Cowboys rode into town ranked number one against the number two Hawkeyes.
What a great night.
13,000 plus fans, great environment.
And then they rode back out, still number one with a squeaker of a victory.
And you know, the Iowa State cyclones early on, the Hawkeyes have had too many events over the years.
But, you know, Iowa State has never won here, but Iowa has lost only one league in 15 years at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
And then this year they lost three.
Right.
And they all came down to heavyweight.
And that means they all came down to West Hand, West Hand right here against Ben Lee.
Ben Lee in double overtime, gets out.
And Oklahoma State has the victory third time this year from West Ham.
You know, we've had some people ask us about that.
This is a fair one.
Young man has to take all that pressure.
Well, that's just the way it is in wrestling.
It comes down to heavyweight.
What you got to do is what West Hand's doing tonight.
Get your singlet back on.
Get back out.
Ready for a big meet.
He's got a big meet tonight because he's going against a gold nemesis, Trent Haney, who beat him last time in the dorm.
So he's got a lot to wrestle for again tonight.
You know, we talk about, I will say in Iowa, how they've come out over the years.
Here's a figure maybe you didn't know over the entire history of wrestling.
Iowa State has actually 32 top five finishes in the Nationals and Iowa still has 30.
And in the last several years, the dual ME situation has been all Iowa, 21 straight won by Iowa.
And that was no different in their last dual meet where they rolled over to the Iowa State cyclones.
And if the this year are tonight a feature match will be the rematch of the 126 between Doug Schwab and Dwight Hanson.
Dwight Hanson has something to prove tonight because he lost against Schwab, the young upstart freshman right here.
Hanson couldn't even answer the call to the center of the mat.
He was stalled out.
He got disqualified.
The young freshman from Iowa beat the three time all-American big win and got Iowa on a roll.
And then at 134, Martin saw inside a big fall and then leave Fall Hard.
The defending national champion at 190 wins to zero against Zach Thompson to seal the victory for the Hawks.
If you're an Iowa State fan, we have some bad news for you for this.
Meet David Maldonado, £150 star has been sacked and he's out of the lineup.
They're hoping to have him back for Sunday's meet with a you and I and 190 runner Zach Thompson was hurt on Wednesday and they're going to hold him out tonight, too.
So it's a tough, tough road for the heart.
And it's not good news for Bobby Douglas, who's going for his 300th career win tonight.
Well, we're going to have it up in just a moment to see how tight matchups are.
There's that great matchup of youngsters, Sanderson against Jergens, £118.
That rematch at 126, Ironside favorite at 34.
You see another rematch at 42 at £150.
It's going to be, unfortunately, a forfeit in Iowa State.
Couldn't come up with 150 pounder that this late in the game at 158 parks against McMann Perkins at 167 against Joe Williams Mulvihill home Hill and Janet's 77 partner will fill in for Thompson at 190 against the national champion cohort.
And then we'll have that last great rematch between Henrik and then.
That's one to stick around for because a lot of be good and tomorrow official tonight is another old friend.
Yep that's Bill Rhodes right there Bill Rhodes from New Hampton.
He's one of the best referees.
We we get that privilege in Iowa to have some of the best officials in the nation.
Bill Rhodes will be officiating in this year's NCAA championships.
There's Cody Sanderson.
That's a fine young sophomore from Heber, Utah, going up against the freshman Eric Jergens from McCarter, Iowa.
Four time state champions going against each other.
Last time, Sanderson won 2 to 1.
Now he's one of only three people to beat Eric Jergens this year.
Is that a great freshman year?
And in fact, the only time really, that Jergens lost on something of a blowout was against Teague.
Moore, who came in here hot last week, he really did.
And he won about ten in a row Eric Jergens had.
So he's looking to turn it around tonight.
Jergens from Iowa going up against Cody Sanderson in the red right there who beat him last time in December in their first dual meet.
Not a lot of people interested in seeing how this one comes out.
Sanderson, as you may know, is a good match for President.
He works very hard with that tool I want to set up right here.
It makes you fight for your arm all through the match.
But Eric Jergens has been a real goer since he lost that mid match to Sanderson.
He has beaten Hunter of Penn State.
He's beaten number of Dern on the Purdue was ranked in the top eight for his honor.
The two losses were two Morgan of Michigan State and to the blackboard as we said beside Sanderson of course Morgan ranked number one in the nation for Michigan State.
So we're going back to the middle three minute first period.
As you know, it's gone through about 2 minutes of it so far.
They start on their feet, second period in third period, one wrestler gets a choice and the other wrestler of the next period deciding whether they want to stay up on their feet, go under.
And the referees position on top center, both of you being very careful here in this first period.
Sanderson rank number ten going against Jergens, who's ranked number six to find young 118 pounders trying to get their team started out right away.
Nothing so far working on the the lock down you can see Sanderson and trying to open it up guys let's go snap down against Jergens had something that way Jergens working on the Sanderson's head and right arm.
They're setting up so they can get a comfortable shot.
One.
Right.
A warning against Sanderson from Bill Rhodes.
Bill Rhodes felt like Jergens had taken a few more shots and had pushed Sanderson going backwards.
And you can't do that.
You got to stay in the center, get after it.
Got it, Cody.
Put it down.
Will do it.
Back out to the center again.
Sanders Dancing, working a lot on the head Drive.
Stone still in there, snapping down like that night on a two on one rise to run set up.
MATTHEWS To call the Russian set up.
He's got to work off that.
Let's do it.
He's trying to work the Underhook two on one.
Whatever he can do to get his short offense going so he can snap down and spin around trying to pull him down.
See, you see, he is making Jergens fight for his arm.
This is a situation that he has to has to score on.
However, it's just another way to be holding on have been for years now.
What what Sanders is trying to do is he's trying to tie up to limit the motion of Erik Jergens.
Jergens has a pretty good motion combining angles, pretty well shoots from the outside as well as in and he's trying to tie it up and try a short offense attack.
Sanders has very few seconds, as you see left in the first period here between Iowa and Iowa State.
You're just joined us.
You're in time to see it all there.
There's no score here.
As we go to the second period between Sanderson and Erik Jergens, there's the what we've talked about before, the Fab Five, those redshirt freshman, the freshmen that are redshirting this year.
Fred, you've been warned the top recruiting class in America last year, Bobby Douglas got he's licking his chops just waiting for next year.
Jergens had his choice.
He started the second 32 under and he is out immediately.
Sanderson is a tough rider, but he could not stay on top of Jergens.
It's a good move for Eric and he's up ahead one to nothing.
And that has to be both.
He open up to him to be able to jump out of that fast.
He was under falling 4 seconds.
So we're back on the feet again.
Here's an arm spin by Sanderson.
And he made it work, but not for him.
Then he got the takedown.
He gave him two for takedown, but not two for the back.
That's a very close call.
Right there.
There are now.
Oh, plenty more.
Bill Rhodes is looking at the way the arm is around the throw down Iowa to tune on a 2 to 1 lane.
Now for Sanders.
And this is the first take.
Look at this right here.
He spins through here and holds him.
If he got to, he probably got do more.
But that's not the way Bill Rhodes saw it.
And he called two for takedown, but not two for the back.
But he wants to take it to Jim Zaleski here.
I want to hone in on.
Right.
We'll go to 15 seconds for the writing time.
15 on the writing time.
15.
I got a one count on the on the back.
That's why we got that.
He got a one count, not a two count, but in that takedown and hold one there.
He got some writing time.
And this is the first takedown ever between these two wrestlers, the first takedown by either wrestler against the other last time.
It was a one and one escapes and Sanderson had writing time going up to win the one, 2 to 1.
But you can't reset.
Oh big, big takedown for reset.
We had six at the end of the year setting up the writing time clock here.
Grimm 9 seconds a running time for Sanderson as they start It's a minute and 17 to go in the second period.
So now Sanderson back where he was to begin the period and he likes being there because last time he was able against Jergens in December to mount up more than a minute writing time, get his point that God gave him the win.
This time, Erick didn't get the whistle.
Jump off the whistle on Sanderson.
Don't fuck it off.
You is in the classic single leg position.
Sanderson doing a good job changing his level, dropping down to the legs and keeping control.
If he would have stayed up with Jergens, Jergens would have been able to control the hands and get out.
But he dropped back down.
Then he came back to his feet and kept his hips underneath him.
Good job by Cody Sanderson, 38 seconds of riding time for Sanderson Goes in there with that head lever.
Tough on the right arm of Erik Jurgens.
These are two very strong youngsters, too.
They're both power at £118, 8 seconds more.
And it's a tough writing time.
Minute for Sanderson to use it.
You know, this just isn't a double make for these two.
This is a proceeding in the national tournament.
If Sanderson can win twice against Jergens, it doesn't matter whether he's ranked below him or not.
He's going to get here comes Jergens around behind the end of the period in the last 10 seconds, and that's the kind of thing you often talk about.
That is a really big factor for you.
If you can score at the end of the.
Oh, absolutely.
That's Hawkeye wrestling right there.
It that's what they do.
They score at the edge of the mat.
They score at the end of the period.
That's why you win.
Now, Sanderson could have gotten out before the end of the period.
He might have had the motion back, but he couldn't.
And we go to the end of the second period with a score 3 to 2 in favor of the Hong Eric Jergens as the big, big.
Now he comes out does a little spin under and comes around and a long sit series right there gets the reversal two points on the here come the coaches and the official we're going to talk about riding time one more time that is going what you're talking about is there's a minute six.
So what Sanderson needs to do is, hey, I got to wait for the coach.
It got a minute, minute six, right in time.
And he needs to.
And I think they're going to reset it.
They're actually more riding time than that for Sanderson, but it isn't up on the clock yet.
Oh.
Oh.
And so the score 3 to 2 here is really going for the writing to the Hawkeye.
Erik Jurgens As we wait for this third of to start, Sanderson Okay, three underneath and he has a chance to get out and score may go up, tie the match, but he has the riding time on the last chance again, holding for 12 right?
Jergens wants to just be like a leech right here, and he's getting it done as well.
Again, big, big right away.
And a lot of the time advantage has been erased.
It's 57 seconds worth and you're down for Sanderson.
So the score on the board is right where it is.
3 to 2 in favor of the man in the writing position.
Jergens on top.
Now, this is the longest Jergens has ever ridden.
Sanderson.
He only wrote Rolling 6 seconds the last time they wrestled each other.
And so right here, that was a big time to be able to put that right on him.
And now he's riding tough.
So score 3 to 2 in favor of Jergens.
Sanders gets to his feet.
But still cannot get out and Jergens is still on top with a minute and 15 seconds to go as they go out of bounds, 33 to 30 between Jergens and Sanderson.
Now, one of the possibilities if Jergens said to, say, ride Sanderson out, he could have a right time point and it wouldn't matter because he's ahead by one.
And if he rides him out, he wins right here at the cradle.
Got the cradle lock Jergens does on the top.
If nothing else, it's a great ride.
Sanderson needs to get back to his base.
He needs to come up and fight those hands and get out of there.
Perfect.
Right here by Jergens in this last period for Dylan's luxuries ahead by one on his attempt to avenge that first loss, Grimes has lost only three this year.
Right now, Jergens put a lot of pressure on.
It's hard for Sanderson to be offensive because of the the pressure put on by Jergens.
What a great ride right here.
Only 30 some seconds left and Jergens is right in victory.
Terrific ride by Jergens and Sanderson is having real trouble coming out in the third period.
Now it's 3 to 2 lead.
Sanderson has the only takedown, but he was reversed at the end of the third.
And there is that score at the end of the period.
Again, T.J., has been the difference.
That's Mark Jergens, who is Eric Jergens brother.
He's in the program to redshirt freshman year, college time, 19 seconds for Sanderson to get out and across and Red Cross and crossing on Iowa State Sanderson who started before the Wisconsin cover up where we go Jergens again good position.
Sanderson does not have the hands to fight him.
Who's in bad trouble here with the last big make the ride.
A lot of pressure.
Jergens does a great job of going back and forth to one side, the other pressure on the arms, throwing the legs in tremendous ride.
The victory be down, set it red.
That cover only 5 seconds to go.
And it's going to be a terrific ride in the period.
And it's a reversal at the end of the second period.
And then he rode Sanderson out to win 3 to 2 Revenge for Eric Jergens.
And so these two are even up for their careers.
Camp 21. wins, one for each, and the Hawkeyes go up three to another.
It's impressive.
Top wrestling by Jergens.
And again, I just can't say how often we see that the points at the end of a period you get down to 510 seconds left makes a lot of difference.
Well, here's the one we were looking for earlier.
We're talking about the rematch between number two ranked Dwight Henson and number 11 ranked Doug Schwab.
Schwab one of this qualification and aims Henson just shut down and didn't get up and he was stalled out in the third period.
And I'm sure that Henson feels he has something to make up here.
Although Schwab has had a great year and he also broke Guerrero in much the same fashion, Guerrero got out six oh, and Schwab just made him quit at the end, took him down about three times in the last period.
Now, to win 10 to 9, one thing, he doesn't run out of his steam.
Doug Schwab fans full steam ahead.
All 7 minutes ten if he has to.
Schwab has beaten Henson and Guerrero, who ranked numbers two and three.
He also beat the fourth ranked man in the country, McNamara of Michigan State and the number six ranked man in the number five ranked at the time, Carl Perry from Illinois.
Schwab's had a great freshman year tie year tie.
So they're tied up here in the first period.
Tanner Center.
Paul Henson always keeps that solid position straight in front of you.
Circle Talking about an international setup is an international style.
The way he sets up what happened, He lost a contact right there.
Just hang it up.
You need it anyway.
But let's go interact.
Okay.
Contact lenses.
Going to go with that line here.
We go back to the center.
We have a minute.
15 to go here.
Just over a minute.
In the first period, the closer Schwab can keep it, which is almost all the match, matches and wrestles are close.
It plays into Schwab's hand right here.
Henson needs to get on the offense right here and use one of his offensive weapons because he's got them.
When he decides to move, he's go A very skilled wrestler in his fifth year at Iowa State comes around, uses the head.
He has still has a chin.
He's got the head in the in the side there.
Good takedown by Dwight Henson there came off the came off a standing front headlock dropped down to the leg and kept the chin and was able to get the two points to the middle.
Blackwood aggressive move by Henson again stuck two options back up.
He's got the front end like there drops down to the single but he still has still has a chin so he's looking to try to turn and maybe even put Schwab into a cradle situation Schwab's able to get out of.
It starts the same way their last match started.
Henson Getting the first takedown in the first period on the whistle, Henson hits the tight waist prevents the set up prevents another one get this but Schwab working that hand and Henson doing a great job of staying on the hips He did a good job of attacking the hips there as they were going towards the edge of the man BROWN Yeah and with that cross-legged right there, he went down.
He had Schwab He had to worry about his being turned over.
There's Jergens, who £118.
And he just joined us Iowa three and Iowa State nothing.
Jergens beat Sanders in 3 to 2 it on 18 That's good pressure right off the whistle by Dwight Henson from Iowa State he was able to hit with the whistle good jam forward motion right there that's what you have to do on top to let them know you're on top.
You don't just ride your jam.
You put pressure on him.
Now he's got a good tight waist in there, making it real tough for Schwab and Schwab, not able to to answer right now.
He's got 6 seconds.
He wanted to roll and couldn't do that either.
Man, there's a roll of Henson's pretty quick and he was able to say whatever And so a very good ride.
It's a minute and 16 seconds a ride for Henson after a takedown here on Schwab.
Right here is Henson taking down now he's in that was David Maldonado.
Well, we're going to look at him even though we won't have him in the meet tonight because he's been rim ill this week.
And I will say we'll forfeit at 150.
Now here, Schwab starting the second in the third period with a score two to nothing and writing time just erased.
And this is the question Schwab likes to start people and he's been able to do it when he got after go top his man on top right now he's putting a lot of pressure on, but he's not being very convincing about working for a full right there.
And there's Coach Zaleski saying you got to when he comes up, you've got to drop down, lower your level and lift up, take him back to the man on your face.
And again, it's close.
Henson match going into the third period.
Extremely talented great wrestler from Lawton, Oklahoma.
Eisenhower High School fourth in the NCAA last year second the year before, third the year before that.
He's out knowledge three to nothing and usually a30 lead is huge for Dwight Henson Very good position very good at protecting a lead very good at winning close matches.
Here comes Schwab in on the leg.
But Henson is a good defensive man and I was at front headlock on him on the counter.
This is not a good position for Schwab.
That man is there.
So let's go, guys.
Let's roll.
Let him keep it.
He says that's can't be improved either way.
So start over again.
Less than a minute to go.
Go right at Carver Hawkeye Arena, Iowa, public television coverage of the rematch as a single leg up six inside single and a good counter by Henson.
The counter almost turns it around for a takedown, and he still has a chance right now standing on his feet looking for the dump.
Nothing better.
Start of single leg.
How do you finish it?
Right here.
That's high five to nothing.
Great pursuit there by Dwight Henson stayed right with him wrestling a very, very smart and intense match Right That was a counter against the single lady.
There's a finish right there.
Flip that arm out.
Gets the double leg right there.
He wraps them both up, gets the two points for a50 lead.
And that's what you mean, of course, when you say three to nothing ladies big because he's very good defensively.
I mean, you come at him even a little less than the preparation on a set up a new life.
He's got to make you pay for it.
10 seconds to go here between Iowa State's Henson and Iowa's Schwab at 126, Schwab called for stalling underneath.
And right now we're instead looking on the right riding time to that slice.
Here's Schwab taking down Guerrero in the last two to win that big match against Oklahoma State.
But he's got a lot to go here to come back from five zero in the last period against Henson Right now I'm sure the coaches from Iowa State would love to see Dwight Henson.
Just stay right in there, get after it, go a full 7 minutes, no breaks Dwight Henson by winning tonight Good catch Chris Bowen on the Iowa career wins You see Chris Bono is one of the Iowa state coaches now or so Mike Land as well out in front there as you can sense from some years ago.
Here's Henson putting in contact lenses decided going to put him in in periods one injury time time and he's ready to go one into the third period it's five to nothing.
Oh right.
And Schwab picks it up.
He's not going to try to go under and get out.
He has the single leg in there.
Henson The nice job of putting the foot down on the man a couple of times he's done that.
You see Henson's top he's very good on defense some strong got out to a great start in the first period with a takedown and he's had two takedowns now in the match and Apple said leading five zero take it down.
So Schwab is going to have to shoot a lot here ahead.
Five to nothing much.
And Henson is going to be making some offensive moves probably, but he's definitely out.
He's definitely going to be ready to counter anything.
That's what throws him in this last minute to take a good look here.
The man has been warned.
Right, Right.
Schwab not taking advantage right now of Henson.
Probably going to take a stalling call if you would attack in low, not being able to get past that first line of defense right there those arms take it back now.
Yeah, that's right.
It's going it's a good call there.
There's the warning.
A little too little, too late.
Well, the other thing to think about, though, is that Henson has a possibility of a major decision here if he gets a takedown.
That's right.
It's 50600 with riding time.
And and I think Bobby Douglas is making that clear to him.
And he's right.
Shot him on the edge of the mat saying, get that takedown.
Go get him.
Don't be stalling.
Get after him.
Dirk I'm Schwab.
Think 27 seconds to go before stalemate.
Paul by Bill Ross and the coaches are telling Henson that he needs a takedown.
In the last 18 seconds the attacks have come in the last minute from Doug Schwab.
There hasn't been the shot from Henson.
Well, he seems to be willing to take the three point decision, but he doesn't.
But he doesn't get the No because he loses because he just got hit for stone.
He waited too long.
It's just the little bit of difference.
Right there between the aggressiveness of both teams and what have been a major decision if it hadn't been for the penalties.
And so it is 8 to 1 in favor of veteran all-American Dwight Henson of Iowa State solid team are Iowa three Iowa State three after the match.
Now we go to 134, our all-American undefeated defending national champion Mark Ironside wrestles Frank Kessler.
The last time they met Ironside ten the names in the box, six in the quarter minutes, six one half months.
Frank Kessler from Osage, Iowa, Mark Ironside from Jefferson and Cedar Rapids.
Well, the crowd loves Mark Ironside.
He's in.
They have reason to.
He's given them a lot of thrills.
There's probably been never more of an intense wrestler in Iowa history, having won 26 matches this year and 12 of them by him.
There he is, home ice high crotch head outside crossing over gets the three talking nothing Ironside here's where it gets tough use it now as a two on one on that arm underneath you can bet he's pumped for this.
He wants to give the fans everything that they want once his last home match.
That's a matter of fact.
He was introduced before the meet with all the Iowa seniors, Joe Williams and and Jeff McGuinness and the rest.
And I know he'd like to make that last and a big one, you know, in the single leg again wanting to cut across now Oh, he's got the elbow trapped coming through wants to cut off gets the two Grant Tinsley bails on the scores for the one one red and he lets him out again for 2346221163.
He's trading two for one now until he can get him to be a pin move on one of those shots.
There's that high crotch.
You can see how it goes.
He gets in on that high cross, then he backs off and he looks for what Kinsey will give him, wanting to cut across there, too.
There's the takedown given one ran and it's eight two for four takedowns in the first 2 minutes.
Does a great job of finding the openings there.
Works inside.
Look at control the wrist right on right there as he ties up drives double leg all the way through for his fifth takedown ten before he's doing a techniques video right now that he's going to market after he's out now he has Tinsley on his back for a count of two says Bill Rhodes.
That's to four points, 12 to 4 ad on the tilt.
You know, there's not many as good as Mark, I can tell.
There's another picturesque blackboard type high cross move, 14 to 4, 14 to 505.
You know, tilt that's 33. there, Paul.
And he's ahead by 12 points actually with a writing time.
Thomas coming off 13 at the end of the first 33 for Joe and Debbie Ironside Mark's parents right there.
And it's bittersweet, I'm sure.
I mean, you know, they're just excited.
But this is the last time in Carver Hockey for their son.
He's had a great career.
He's going to get a great standing ovation, that great appreciation for him.
Frank Kingsley of Iowa State is out 1417.
The six now Iowa and Iowa State are three three.
After two matches, Hinson avenged his loss in Ames against Schwab and Iowa's Eric Jurgens avenged his loss against Sanders here and Mark Ironside working on his 27th victory against no losses.
11 falls.
He's got an unblemished season.
He's planning to keep it that way.
He goes into every match looking for the ball.
That's 21 to 7 now, if he were to let him up and take him down again, it would be match termination for 15 points.
But he may prefer to just turn him over.
I think he'd like to try to pin him as you come the minute left to go in the second period because of the let up in the takedown was with one thing, but he's going to try to force him over now.
Nothing yet.
He's got to square up to you got to come up to me.
You can tell he doesn't want to let him up.
No.
Cheers.
One, I want to know how I'd like to do something to take him down to his back, because the next takedown will end the match here and there.
It is.
Match termination move.
15 point difference with the people.
Stand up.
There's his parents.
They're proud he'll screen from 4 minutes and 25 seconds.
Here's a look at the last takedown for Mark Ironside in Havre, Hawkeye Arena.
Big win, one last takedown.
And this meant tonight he had nine and 4 minutes and 25 seconds.
Oh, well, now we're going to £142.
Iowa has taken an 823 lead, a five point addition to the score for Ironside.
Here's Jeff McGuiness against Cole Sanderson.
The second of the Sanderson brothers was another one redshirting this year.
There'll be three in the lineup next season.
Cole Sanderson at 142 against Jeff McGinnis.
The first time they met up in New York.
The winner, of course, was McGuinness, and Jeff McGuinness had to escape in the last minute and have a riding time point to win 624 50.
So it was it was a close match because Jeff McGuinness, as you know, the last time out, went up against number one.
Steve Schmidt in the first minute had Schmidt on his back.
There's a ten to the fireman's carry by Sanderson which didn't work and then know amazing he ended up on his own back and lost by fall to this stunning shock of the people in this hall.
That was one of the lower points of the night for the hockey fans over.
There's a lot of emotion around here that night, up and down and up and down, just one minute to the next.
Looks like maybe a little cut on the face of the face.
So let's stop that and begin to sort of be looked at by the Iowa Trainers Iowa Conference Championships tomorrow at 5:00.
That's a terrific conference.
No rethink wrestling.
We got our guys right here.
Get those 11 schools together.
Wartburg favored Jim Miller's great program at Wartburg college.
You can see that the finals from Waverly tomorrow at 5:00 AM on Sunday, live from noon.
I was gymnasium Iowa State, the same Iowa State team now against the Panthers of you and I first chance this year to see him under the new coach Mark man front headlock tough from McGuinness may use it up let's go guys calls in a stalemate Let's go back to the center right here now minute 44 to go in the three minute first period back and 5050 and no score seconds McGuinness a fifth year senior going against redshirt freshman Cole Sanderson.
There he is in high crotch catches the elbow and outside trying to come through again gets up to his feet, comes out behind and gets a202 to nothing.
McGuinness looking has the Turk situation right there has a lot of pressure on Sanderson right here looking for a prize, some kind of series that will get Sanderson's back towards the mat Sanderson needs to get back to his base.
Get back up is the.
Get out of him.
Let's go.
Now, that was Bill Rhodes talking to McGuinness awake, working on the firearm with 40 seconds to go until the start over again.
Let's Call it a stalemate, then Gable down in a seat that I'm not so sure he's yet very comfortable in.
Concentrate.
It's to watch a wrestling match I suppose if you're if you're either been in them or coaching them and not been moving around a lot.
McGuinness has 50 seconds of riding time here as he starts out the leg and again shaking it, working with it there, got that bend up there and looking to turn.
Sanderson got the arm bar right there.
You go to check it out now.
15 seconds to go on the carry on as you can see, the clock ticking down.
After that, McGuinness leads two to nothing and he's riding tough.
He has more.
He's not just right in there.
He's got a lot of pressure right there up.
And the front part of the body, of course, Anderson, looking to Tony, the end of the first period.
A lot of riding time not to do nothing, lead against the father of Jeff.
He's president of the hockey club and been a great fan for years and years of the Hawks.
He's looking up on the screen.
Our pictures are up both on the price and rare display in Carver Hawk.
I can see himself there sat Sanders and moved too quickly.
That and he's in the top position in the second period going starts under comes to his feet right away and gets out wide Good job of being in control getting his hips out underneath him.
Coming up, we had Sanders who needs to get some kind of offense going right here, puts it the out of the face get to back position strong headlock position for Sanderson.
But McGuinness pulled out of that second we have a three to nothing lead for the man in black Jeff McGuinness Sanderson hasn't been able to figure out even how to get past the hands yet, and that's what he's trying to figure out here.
He's got to get the motion, but he's got to put the right tie, put the moves with it right here.
He can't find the angle.
He's shooting straight ahead.
And McGuinness isn't even going to let him close again.
He's keeping the pressure on pretty much stuck in Sanderson right now.
You'll see Sanderson with a his set up with Leeds on the left leg.
And knowing I think that McGuinness does like to shoot that leg, the fire the back way and he gets an instant.
You got it.
Anyway, got to get him all the way across the side.
Nineveh, all the way across high crotch takedown.
Very nice execution by Jeff McGuinness.
Can't go going either.
Where stay or go that there's hot words that come around for two points real slick and that's Jeff McGuinness get as much technique as anybody in the nation and that's why he was an undefeated four time state champion, an NCAA champion, two time all American.
Come out, come out, come out.
We have about 20 seconds to go in a second, Terry.
Now, McGuinness goes in on the legs.
Nowhere doesn't he was able to do this.
He kept enough pressure on Cole Sanderson right there that Sanderson was down forward and opened up the legs.
He was able to just slip in the leg and still use it very easily.
McGuinness just passed 2 minutes in a riding time, five to nothing lead and a lot of writing time against Carl Sanderson.
Here's a reminder that after the one £50 match, we'll show you another edition of our videotape profiles entitled Off the Mat.
And today we'll meet Iowa State's coach Bobby Douglas, now in his sixth year.
And I you show our season schedule to lose and the first half starts after 150.
So I hope you stay tuned.
Well, one thing that Coach Sanderson did there that I'd probably rethink is he chose down underneath Jeff McGuinness when McGuinness had already ridden him over 2 minutes and he had his choice.
And, you know, I thought maybe choose neutral because you just don't choose to go under.
Jeff McGuinness.
It's no bargain going on your feet against him either.
No.
So he'll made it.
Let's go.
You're going to get out.
It's going to have to go to something else and that's not working.
Iowa Hill Road said that it brings him back to the middle, you know, upset Robert Henson of Iowa State.
He was the winner at 126 Iowa leading the team score 8 to 3.
Now Sanderson seen on a single leg, but he bent the leg back to where the referee called it potentially dangerous.
He said, Let's start over till the match is stopped.
When you get into a situation where one of the athletes can be injured, it's not what the sport is about.
Get the takedown call minute 16 five to nothing.
Score for McGuinness.
Come on.
Sanderson having trouble lowering his level to getting on that lower leg attack.
He comes in, but he's coming right in at the hands of McGuinness McGuinness, able to stop him.
So far he's been able to turn it into a couple of takedowns.
Well, he gets something of a front headlock, but it's not really a front headlock.
It's like a double armbar on Trent and McGuinness is able to pull out bravely.
He's set up again, 15 seconds to take him down.
There's again that high crotch to the back leg and he takes him down for the third time.
Seven nothing.
And Peter pushes him away from one looking for that major decision center.
And all he needs is one more takedown, 7 to 2.
Now let's call Cole Sanderson for stalling.
Backing off.
Let's Joy Zaleski saying, Get after him, Jeff, get after him.
You got a chance for a major decision.
What a great way to go out.
And your last match here, Garber Carver.
Hawkeye, get after him on your McGuinness.
Thinking about the inside trip, which is one of his patented moves.
He needs to move now.
There he does double Dublin.
Good.
Now he's trying to pin Lyle Sanderson with that double leg.
Went to the back, and he got two back points anyway.
And that makes a major decision for sure to take 9 to 2 in the back points, 11 to 2 major decision, 12 to 2 by the time point makes it 12 for two is 10% favor of Jeff McGuinness, who goes on a winner of his last match on the Palmer hook line that his senior year for now 12 to 3.
I'll show up at Iowa State well 18 to 3 with the forfeit they just showed Casey Gillis getting the forfeit because David Maldonado in case you just tuned in, it was taken in the hospital this week, second half of I think we heard even rumors that they were afraid for a little while he was having something like appendicitis before.
It's possible Iowa State fans for the year.
But I think now maybe there's the flu and so they're hoping he'll be back for you and I on Sunday.
We'll wait and see.
But at any rate, of course, six points of 18, the three in favor of Iowa over Iowa State, that's the end of the £150 match which didn't take place tonight.
Iowa Public Television would like to present another off the mat videotape profile.
Today.
We'll meet Iowa State head coach Bobby Douglas and his sixth season.
And he wants to take the Cyclones to the top.
Back at Carver Hawkeye Arena after meeting Bobby Douglas more often that feature it's Iowa 18, Iowa State three In the rematch at Carver Hawkeye between these two interstate powers.
And it got to be 18 to 3 because six point forfeit at the £150 class, a really a misfortune for Iowa.
David Maldonado came down ill this week for Iowa State and he was unable to wrestle at 150.
They couldn't replace him late in the game.
And so that's six points.
And he was hoping to win.
And if he had been able to maybe possibly not, that's a nine point swing.
Right.
And, you know, really the other reason the score is the way it is, because we had to turn around, you know, I mean, it's we had a turnaround of 218 with Eric Jurgens winning this time against Sanderson.
And then, of course, a 126 the turnaround with Hinson, the higher ranked wrestler, getting revenge against freshman Schwab.
There is an American young man who was a part of Iowa wrestling over the years, one challenger from Iowa, never to Iowa City.
Well, it's a lot of fun for us this year on college wrestling because we have been able to bring you either three or four.
Terrific.
Great.
Well, we're very exciting.
As we say, they went down to the last match and we have a good weekend this weekend.
It's it's a triple header, Iowa conference championships from Wartburg on Saturday at 5:00, tomorrow at 5:00.
And Watford has had a great year.
But there are some terrific teams, too, in that Iowa conference and we love their wrestling, this Iowa tournament.
They really get after it.
It's going to be exciting meet.
And then on Sunday, we'll be live.
Well, the last time a college wrestling meet of the year with a goal and I panthers against the Iowa state cyclones that'll be live 2:00 here on Iowa public television.
That'll be our first opportunity to see you and with coach Mark Manning right heading up the program at uni.
So plenty of wrestling here on Iowa public television all the way down to the triple header.
I hope your enjoyment of Dan Gable.
Boy, the line goes around the corner.
You know, from the time the kids line up to the length of the match longer just to get his autograph.
And he's always been very good about it stays until the last one gets to the line.
It's awesome to mention to them.
Besides the college wrestling, of course, we have the Iowa High School Wrestling meet as usual tomorrow on Saturday night, the 28th.
And that's going to be from the veterans of the tournament on what we have every year for many years.
And we love it.
If you'd like to write to us for comments about the wrestling this there, about the matches, about the way they're gone, about what you'd like to see, what we don't like to see any comments whatsoever.
Anyway, there's the address.
College wrestling, Post Office Box 6458 Johnston, Iowa 50131 Again, Post Office Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa.
50131.
Iowa Public Television always trying to make it better over the years and when we find out what you like to do, well, they do make it better because there's nobody that shoots better wrestling than Iowa public television.
It makes our job easier.
HAMMER Work is in.
The production is just awesome.
But one more experience of it.
There's no question about it than any place in the world.
You're very, very lucky in, Iowa, to have these people behind the cameras and calling the shots because they know what's out there.
Well, it's Iowa State and Iowa just about ready to take off again at £158 tonight.
And we have five weeks to go.
You said Iowa State is missing one man.
Again, it's the upper.
Zach Thompson has an injury.
They're hoping that it's not going to hurt him too much, but he's hurt himself in practice on Wednesday and he'll be replaced by Brad Horton tonight.
Coming up in one round of the face defending national champion Mark Fuller.
We are waiting for the runner up.
Always want to get their names mixed up.
That's 100%.
Okay.
£158.
That's who I was going to send out to show Casey Jealous this time.
Last night's game, McMann gave McMann at £158 and his opponent from Iowa State is going to be Perry Parkes from Fort Pierce, Florida.
Gay McMann comes all the way from Alaska, all other stuff right away.
So Alaska and Florida are.
But they meet in the central part of the U.S. and Iowa right away.
Gabe McMahon of Iowa goes in the two on one tie up, the Russian set up and coached by Jim Zaleski, his brother, former all-American wrestler for the Hawkeyes, Lenny Zaleski.
And Conor, Alaska in the cup sit in.
He lost to Joe Moore of Oklahoma State, and so did Perry Parkes, 18 to 7.
This park's loss was 10 to 3, with McMahon at £158, Iowa leading 18 to 3.
Good action right there.
Good scramble.
McMahon was able to trap the arm and come in to the leg under the leg, but he got too low.
He got out of position and he gets back to his legs.
Though, getting back on the feet.
Nice continuation by nice hips there by parks.
And he's trying to come around, both wrestlers trying to give all they've got right there good action.
It was a lot of fun They've used them and 12 so far attendance here at Carver Hawkeye 6201 five Use it Nice Ice it up on a set.
Head outside Central Park pull him in.
But McMahon's got the ankle back there and that's why he can't prevent trying to come around.
He's got the ankle trap pulled up.
All he needs to do is pass by and come around.
But Parks does a nice job of facing off, coming back through, trying to get the wow.
Now both have good hips, both good defense.
Here comes McMahon, who was finally able to post parks enough to get around him and he takes the lead told nothing gave McMahon over the cyclone Perry Parks.
That was great action by Ben Wallace and it was a persistence and most persistent one was McMahon there where he is finally able to post the arm like that.
Just slide around two points now.
We'll see what happens on top.
McMahon To prevent the set up.
So what happened was McMahon looked at the clock.
That's what happened.
And as he looked up at the clock, Parks came around and got the two points, just a loss of concentration.
Wow.
Story to tell as McMahon comes out.
Oh, nice job there.
All that park's in trouble.
All right.
Lost a head, but he's.
No, he's not going to come back.
But a takedown makes it 5 to 2 in favor of the Hawkeye game.
They got forest.
He's got the chicken wing, but he loses it right there.
Parks is able to ward off that attack.
Crossface tough crossface in there on it.
One parks to.
We're now in the last few seconds it was three minute first period.
Dave McMahon had a very good first period, a warning against parks on the bottom for the inactivity.
Your choice.
Here's the takedown right here from the front headlock coming through.
They're almost locked up the knee and the head for a cradle situation.
But Parks, get out, you know, cover him.
Looking up at the clock cost.
Both wrestlers it cost McMahon because Parks was able to reverse him in right there.
The reason that Rhodes gave that stalling call was because he was looking at parks and parks looked up at the clock and he said, if you're going to look up at the clock, you're not trying to get out.
And he called him for stalling.
But as time ran out, nice little tussle right at the beginning of this period, two one were set off by McMahon, stopped by Parks, but he couldn't stop the second one.
And it's now 6 to 2 in favor of McMahon.
Whoa.
Step through and he's in trouble.
He has new man Scott McMahon down.
What?
Scram.
Wednesday is sometimes a five point move, a three point NEARFALL and the score now is 7 to 6 in favor of parks.
Seven seven after the escape, why not make a change?
John, this is one big scramble.
I'll tell you, it's exciting.
They may not be rated now.
They're fun to watch and they're probably not going to be this year.
There's a take their young freshman in there and they are not only having but the fans watching tomorrow.
A lot of action here on Lands is going to keep coming and see if you can stay with me.
He's willing to let Parks go because I think he feels confident on his feet.
5 to 8 parks, remember, has been warned.
Eric McMahon in again on the leg got a high crotch and a takedown 11 to 8 a three point lead again, he had a four point lead and then got another big five point move.
One, There's a point against Wilder now for McMahon, and Roach is the referee isn't fooling around with the stall.
And he's saying if you're not going to move and you've done such a great job of moving, but if you're not going to move, you're going to get hit.
And Parks just quit wrestling down there.
And he hit him with solid four point lead to 5 seconds left.
Go.
Oh, Gabe McMahon is a three time state champion, as Jim told you.
And from Alaska, he's in his first year redshirt freshman for Iowa is down the last Alaska.
So except for that five point move, I think he's quite happy with that.
He's been doing it throughout this period.
It's Park's turn to be down.
He's trailing by former writing time is a minute and five in favor of McMahon potential point and he's now building on it Oh wow man go 12 to 9 because he's confident on his feet.
They're gone.
And both these young men were academic All-Americans, good students, and they'll get it.
They're going to be around a while, probably wrestling each other.
Here's a shot off, a two on one head to the outside, single set up and a very nice almost takedown here by Parks trying to slide around, see if it can keep sliding.
But McMahon has a pretty tight lock on the leg and he's up high.
Stalemate, stalemate, No takedown, 12 to 9 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
Here comes Corey Parks to his feet.
Ready?
He has a minute and 25 to make up three points.
Go, go, go, go back, back.
It was an interesting exchange.
Yeah, And then a very easy takedown at the end of it.
It's fun to see that one again.
There's a lot of strange things on that floor exchange.
It's just a matter of execution, persistence.
And the last one to make the move is getting the points tonight in this match.
So if you just keep moving he's not and that's what Pro Park's not doing.
Yeah, Gary Parks is getting no sympathy from Bill Rhodes that's Perry.
Next time will be two points back up He leads by six.
Now he may be thinking about a major decision to he has a half a minute to go.
He'd like to do it with back points.
And there's two now, this is a situation where one mark penalty penalty and it's a disqualification.
That was 2.79, had 15 seconds to go 17 to town.
This is a situation where you just got a wrestler.
You don't want to give up the six points that you give up from being disqualified for your team.
So you just keep wrestling.
You don't stop.
It's major decision territory.
Even if you give up takedown and it is a major decision with running time 18 to 10 for the wrong guy.
Once it is over, three bucks.
Iowa State, four points for this team once again lead up to 22 to 3.
Breaker of the Hawkeyes.
Only the second time that game, my man want to make a decision.
A lot of seniors here tonight but there's a few freshmen and we've seen them at 118 under 26 for the Hawkeyes.
Another one, right.
Sophomore has found himself as a freshman.
But then burger to the top sophomore here comes on young man who's not a freshman.
And I think he's a he's a two time national champion, ranked number one at this way.
Joe Williams.
Now I'm feeling we're going to see a lot of action right here.
His opponent is a sophomore from Creighton Prep in Omaha, Nebraska, Ben Perkins, who was a three time Nebraska champion.
But Joe Williams took that double leg during the boom right away.
Back to me.
And that's not a takedown because Joe's knees were doing right after it when Joe Williams, who hit you with that double leg and he hit most people and he hit you with it, you are in trouble.
That's a straight ahead move in wrestling.
And he can put his point on his shoulder in your midsection.
Now, fans, you get go.
You have a long night ahead of you.
So 7 minutes.
Go to work, guys.
Well, this is not a rematch because last time Joe Williams wrestled Matt Patagonia right out here.
So Ben Perkins, Joe Williams wrestling for the first time this year.
Joe Williams beats Mark Smith of Oklahoma State in around an overtime mark, ranked number two in that fabulous dome between these two teams inside Trip set up to a single leg for Ben Perkins but strong leg there put down right on the mat by Williams keeps the over hook and they're back into it.
Well nice shot Perkins.
That's what you have to do.
You got to make your move.
You if you're Ben Perkins, you need to make Joe Williams move.
He goes to the two on one, set up that Russian tie.
So that's out of bounds.
How much time left?
A minute.
44 in the first quarter.
Couple of winners.
Couple of senior Mark Ironside on the left, Jeff McGinnis on the right hand elbow.
Joe Williams is extremely hard to take down.
He got a couple of takedowns in a week against Arizona State.
He was taking call you said.
Yeah, he's taken down twice by Casey Strand out there and that's the only time he's been taken down all year.
Last week, Mark Smith could not get into him.
He just couldn't break through.
Joe Williams had two takedowns, the last one, of course, the win in overtime.
And now Joe Williams being called for stalling right here for blocking off that no score.
Here he comes on a snatch and Perkins snaps.
Perkins comes back with a high crotch also did a show that but one left to go in the first period at 167 Joe Williams against Ben Perkins, Iowa against Iowa State 22 to 3.
The Hawks lead.
The one match that Iowa State has won was Hinson at 120 6000.
Well, coming right here with the Iowa State coach just doesn't want to do is Ben Perkins to go stand in straight up with Joe Williams because he can throw you right to your back and work.
And guys, Joe has underhook.
But that seems like Perkins doesn't mind.
He likes the elbow hook situation.
From the looks of it.
Control the time he's been, as you might say, disrespectful of Joe Williams.
He's standing right up to him as he have as you have to do.
I'm not going to have a chance against him by being shy.
Josh, come in.
Here comes the double leg again.
Put but really good fending off by Ben Perkins.
But look at that pick.
Nice work drops down to the ankle, pick drives through for the two points.
Joe Williams That is what happens when you have a lot of weapons in your arsenal.
And it's also at the Iowa wrestling.
10 seconds left.
Boom, end of the first period, those scores coming, It doesn't make a difference.
Underhook drives through the hips, picks the ankle, drives through, Rut is down, hip toss to the ankle, picked to the takedown that Ben Perkins will get acted on position cover him go for two starting the two minute second period.
We saw that scoring at the end of the period really make a difference in the £118 match where Erik Jurgensen avenged the loss against cyclones.
Sophomore Cody Stephenson he's going to got to take down at the end of the period Sanders in store right on top of the right one Perkins trying to get out rebounded Paul Ryan Williams takes him to the mat he's he's going to tell him for that point scored he's got the count nice tilt loaded him up there he's got that far wrist great great pass right back there to put it back in or not out there Joe Williams has trouble from contact once in a while to get one up time.
We're just taking the time back out with a minute 20 to go in the second period.
Five to nothing in favor of Joe Williams.
A replay.
How Joe just puts him in his lap right there.
Look how tight he's got.
That wrist, both hands on the wrist loading him up and getting the two points back points.
Our three point back point.
He's just about to get riding time over a minute.
And he just did a big going from with 10 seconds left in the first period 200 match two two points takedown right at the end of the first period, then three big back points at the start of this.
And Joe Williams now is riding time and all of a sudden the difference is six points.
You got to keep working there, cover Bearcats, you got to move out a fresh start ordered by referee Bill Rhodes.
This time Perkins gets to his feet, but they just get the moment.
That's right.
He didn't control the hands.
Tried to.
Coming up.
Oh, Williams looking to do something big for this crowd.
You just kind of get the feeling that two on one on that wrist, he's just he can do all kinds of things with it.
Like to tell you right here, he's got it tight again him up hey crazy.
And he's controlling those hips Big three points out of it eight to nothing shows you what Joe Williams can do right there.
Ben Perkins, a tough competitor, 3.08 to nothing.
Now there's the major, but he still has that two on one and he's going to do it again.
Hey, lost a two count?
Well, it's only a two point NEAR-FALL but still, it's wonderful.
Yes.
Matt, eight points a near Falls in the second period.
He pulls that wrist all the way against the chest, all the way.
Has it both the double risk tie really does a nice job twice.
So the end of the second period ten the same in favor of Joe Williams here at Carver Hawk Down before 6205.
He's going to you know you know how much Joe Williams like being on top.
He just chose to start the third period here.
Joe Williams chose the top six.
I like the hat.
I'm going to get out.
He's given me that wrist.
I'm going to take it.
I got there.
He's got to go.
He's got it again.
And if you start looking for that, he'll hit you with something else.
And Ben Perkins is going to come up or he's going to get hit for stalling.
He's fighting for his arm.
The whole period got guys out.
So it's 10 to 1 on the first point them Perkins Joe looking at the clock, Jim Zaleski says Just know where you're at.
Joe because we want every extra point we can get and as does every coach, every every wrestler that goes out on the mat, you just want all you can get.
Here's that double leg we were talking about again, shoulder right in their stomach, having a beauty, reaching back.
He's going to choke, come across and Perkins gets back to his base, get up 12 to 1 here in the third period with about a minute to go.
And if you're Perkins, you just don't know which way to turn.
Because anyway, Joe's to beat you.
You like him.
I got one red green locked him here's a double leg takedown drives through violation dumps him down two green locked cover and pow interlocked hands position where you lock hands on.
And so Perkins gets his second point It's 12 to 2 cradle almost That's why I'm the Joe Williams special.
These two, if you get up a little bit too slowly, your head got red now bottom and then Perkins gets hit for stalling.
He's just holding a base, not really trying to get up right here, 12 to 3 now after the escape.
And he's got riding time, so he's got a ten point lead.
If he was get a five point move, he'd have match termination.
He's going to get a takedown out of this one, too.
No, he didn't.
But that's because he was looking for the No, he was looking for a fall.
And Ryan is looking for that five points right there.
And you can bet he's going to look for it.
25 seconds to go between Ben Perkins and Joe Williams, Iowa State against Iowa at Carver Hawkeyes on public television, Iowa Public Television's coverage Affair of the Intrastate Rematch.
Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug Brown Scores 22 to 3 Iowa State £126.
And that's a pull in the double leg to get to 14 300.
He's getting back on.
He got he got two to 18 to 3.
That makes it a 17 to 3.
That makes it one more time.
I think it's 16 to 3 and on the right.
Oh yeah.
Well he just barely missed it.
Just barely missed.
So it's a major decision for Joe Williams in this final match, too.
And Garver Hawkeyes as our Hawkeyes made a decision, puts Iowa up 26 to 378.
And now we've got a 177 ahead of the Buckeyes up on the board for the visiting Cyclones.
It's Matt Mulvihill from Des Moines, West Des Moines Darling High School at one time.
He's a senior.
His opponent is the sophomore from Brett Paul.
Janos locked himself into this position with some very good wrestling here lately.
Matt Mulvihill, who is one of the co-captains of the Iowa State team, OH, has had to struggle against some injuries in his career.
He's had some big matches.
He could beat good people.
Sometimes he loses matches that you wouldn't expect him to lose, but he's always dangerous.
I believe this is the first time these two have met.
Jan wasn't in lineup last match and he just broke into the starting lineup in late January.
But you're going to see Brad Horton, who was in that match the first time up at 190 to replace injured Zach Thompson.
Low single shot by Jan. And it's going to he's got to create a lot you and me and he's got it tight but them he got two on the back and two for the takedown a four point move by Matt Mulvihill of Iowa State a tight waist high rise good start for Mulvihill there was able to counter an attack by Jan and usually cradle on for the two and two quick hits a tie right there and he has the arm bard on top it goes tight waist one music top coming you got it now you don't need the rest of that right here on top.
The Iowa state coaches saying don't rest, get after, put on the attack, don't rest a minute.
The running time has been passed.
All the Hill has a potential run at that point, but he's actually staying pretty parallel.
Yeah, it's good point, Doug.
He is parallel.
He's not getting out to the side.
There's no way they're going to call Jennifer stalling underneath when there's no risk being taken by Mulvihill on top what he gained There was writing time for the one good judge.
Down three.
I have a suspicion this is going to get exciting for it's over to her left Tom Brands and the three time NCAA champion most recent because all three of them are three time NCAA champions Lincoln Mac Oregon nine national champions.
Chip's sitting on the Iowa bench, three for each chair, so it's a gem trailing by three up against Marble Hill, who had a nice big move, a defensive shot of a cradle, and he got a two point fall to go with it.
There's the end of the first period, 4 to 1 Norvell Hill with a minute and 18 seconds of right in time, I would say down read is down the hill picks down that cover him up for Jan putting on the pressure can't keep marble hill from standing up Mobile comes up to a nice tripod gets his hips out now he just has to break the hands free but he should do that coming up.
He's a granny man and that's what they try to do.
They're good at cutting his back low.
He's got a lot of lengthening.
Jan able to fend off a couple of maneuvers there by mobile help Low Hill gets one finally good scramble by both wrestlers 5 to 1 now after the escape that did cut the writing time back to 53 seconds so there's no potential point there now.
Jim Mulvihill of Iowa State, he lost the number two man in the country, Simpson Mulvihill doing a nice job.
He got in in the single.
He was flattened out.
He pulled himself back in, got up to his knees, then up to his feet, pulled in the hips and got the two points.
That was a very nice job of Mulvihill not giving up.
Once he got flattened out.
So it's 7 to 1 now in favor of the Cyclone Mulvihill against Paul Ginn at 170.
Let's go.
There's a warning against Jan on the bottom.
Bill Roach the says the he got a little bit more activity up there and Mulvihill doing a better job now getting to the side and showing a little bit of risk there now he has that two on one too that you saw Joe Williams tilting with Mulvihill still pretty parallel right there.
He needs to get out the side, load up one now and get that two one to work for him, get a couple of points out of it.
And the same one, 26 to 3.
Is the team score in favor of Iowa.
Second around look at me three three.
Jen needs to break the tie right off.
The whistle needs to come up, get these hips underneath him.
He didn't get cross.
And that's because Iowa State Mulvihill pulled up too quickly on top 26 to 3.
The only win was by Hinson of Iowa State up to now.
And that was what we don't discover.
The first win that Hinson has ever had in his career at Iowa City's Carver Hawkeyes.
So in his series Excited Now he is a senior year.
He finally gets the job done three, two and 721 in favor of Mulvihill and he has in time to it.
It's a nine second neutral.
Jen doesn't want to go under He wants to start on the feet Easy goal shot.
And he and Jen gets a good shot right in here.
Now he's got a good position if he can get around and control Mulvihill holding on hoping that he gets stalemate call something of a scramble There's a stalemate.
Still no one says you're not going anywhere without either one of you.
So let's start over again.
Second, second.
Next one, Kent counts a point, a blood.
The hill has blood on the forehead.
I think he got bumped on the brow there.
And that's okay.
So they're going to call time out to take care of that.
They come back to the center of the mat.
Well, Matt Mulvihill is tough tonight.
He's no second pot, had two takedowns.
The first one was the big one right at the beginning of the man's takedown into a cradle and away for a four point move.
And he has added an escape and a takedown to it.
He leads Paul Jan by 7 to 1 here in the third period, College wrestling.
That's the address to right With any comments, anything, Get him some more.
But you want to say, okay, post office box 6450 about our coverage.
Here we go.
This year on neutral Iowa Public Television.
Johnston, Iowa, we'll give you that address again here a little while ago.
And get your pencil.
There's a shot by.
Jensen Jan, right off the whistle.
He's had a couple of shots there.
Now what he needs to do is cut off, drive in through the hips and get the two point call by Bill Rhodes.
He just needs to come through that one side or another.
He can't keep it there.
He got it and he got the two.
So it's seven, the three he needs to let go of him.
He wants to attack from the outside here.
Keep it snappy and concise with Mulvihill because you don't want to get caught up and let Mulvihill pick the prize.
We're going to stop this fairly because he's got a bloody brogue in the bill.
Rhodes hasn't seen it.
Seven the three 8 to 3 lead after the escape for Mulvihill and there's another take on the Georgian Now Mulvihill is going to want to hold on to him and see he's made the mistake in that Mulvihill time up he just didn't react fast enough.
And the blood's going to help the Iowa wrestler right there because he needs to.
What the Iowa wrestler needs to do, Jan, is push him away.
Okay.
Here's the takedown in on this single leg hit to the inside, dumps him right down right here.
He should be thinking about pushing him away, not jumping on top of him and letting him grab his arms and elbows and tie him up.
If you scroll, you're around.
So 8 to 5.
And here are some guys I got to get back.
Matt Mulvihill built a 7 to 1 lead in the first two periods, and now Jan has been attacking him as a two quick takedown is right You are still down?
Yes Meyer is still down Iowa state bench made that correction He's going to go up to Starks and our man was in a down position, 8 to 5, a three point lead now 9 to 5.
Here comes Jen again.
Marla Hill is going to have to get back to where he was earlier.
Ah, he's out in trouble.
Nice swing outside, single right there.
Good thinking.
He needs a push away.
He needs to push away seven, eight points for Jan nine four.
Martin Hill nine.
The seven riding time advantage still goes to Mulvihill down, but we have 37 seconds to go to make up essentially three points.
Wow.
Wow.
He's got Mobile Hill standing still 10 to 7.
Oh my gosh.
He's standing still.
But look what he's doing.
He's grabbing.
He's got to push it away.
10 to 9.
And right in time he's got to turn him over or he's going to lose there.
That's stone.
That's a good call.
It's a good call.
Warning against the man in the bottom.
He's tall.
He's still stone blocked at the moment.
Hill needs to wrestle now.
There's 11 seconds left to go.
We're going.
And what is?
He's got to push him away.
He's got to push him away.
Pushes him right on.
And this would tie it.
This would tie.
He's all right.
Tie It wouldn't tie him.
He got to to make it 11 to 11.
But the riding time is going to go to Mulvihill.
Although Hill wins the spot despite a ten point third period by Paul Jan whoop what did go came with to okay so it's 1111 one back no back points it's 1111 we're on our feet 11, 11, 1211 Iowa State Colby Lab and Iowa State with the writing time.
Yep, that's right.
It's Iowa State 1211 J came from 7 to 1 lead and mobile hand.
What a great comeback.
Makes it 26 to 6, but a little short on Jen's part.
Yep.
Now we're going to 190.
And as we said, Zach Thompson, Iowa State's ninth ranked freshman.
Matty is injured, maybe slightly, but they're going to hold him on this meet because of this late in the year.
And they don't want to have any more in trouble for the Nationals or the Big 12.
So tonight you're looking at Portland against defending Champion, full heart of £190, third ranked lethal hard from Iowa state of the face junior from the car accident hometown is Hesburgh wanted to call high school.
Brad Harkins, a junior from Norwalk, Iowa, regularly won 77.
He's up against a 190 pounder Lethal heart, who's pretty good.
Yeah.
Wow.
National title, I guess.
Given that title considered pretty good 26 to 6 Iowa leads.
And remember, we have the heavyweight match between two old rivals who always have a good go.
Trent Heinicke of Iowa State and Wes Hand of Iowa fans.
One thing about Brad Horton is he wouldn't even have been able to put a 190 segment last year.
He really has built himself up.
He's a different looking wrestler than he was last year.
Russell won 58 and he looks like you know he could wrestle just one weight class lower, 177.
Well, I'm sure when he found out probably on Wednesday or Thursday that he would probably have to be filling Zach Thompson.
Mike didn't have to worry about eating less to make 177.
You got to let him go for a while.
Brad with the headgear back on and carton of Iowa State having trouble with his equipment.
There's Matt Mulvihill who just barely held on that third period to the cut on had stopped the match a couple of times.
He was ahead 7 to 1, going in with 2 minutes of riding time and better going into the last period.
And Paul Jahn took him down five times and it wasn't enough five times in the last year to go out here in the middle.
Now let's pick his address.
Four comments.
I'll start with your ballpoint pen.
We'll give it to you in just a that.
Here comes Fuller with a body on the barrel having to do its part and leads to another.
They may go down, read he's got to go optional cover one read the full heart on the attack went the optional start right there and pushed him away and feels very confident on his feet against Horton right lock position kind of post Martin down and did he did he just posted him and slid around and gets the takedown on the edge of the match with 4 to 1 now put it all right.
Here's the end of that as they go off the mat.
Two points again, full heart lets his man get up, works off the underhook a body lock again.
That burnout just threw up the arm there, got the bear hug, dropped down for the two points.
Let's go to optional start again.
Push.
You keep working from the feet.
Now obviously he can he feels very confident on his feet he feels he can penetrate you get to bear hugs in there.
You're going in a long ways.
And Horton hasn't been able to keep him out.
6 to 3 score to run.
And now Horton is being warned for backing out.
Well, this is one of those situations where let's go if you're Brad Horton, there's not a lot you can do except write something like that.
But as far as he's being out powered by a full heart and he's got his head stuffed, that time and full heart scores, making it 8 to 300 8 to 4 now.
Good in Florida on a low single.
That's something new for him in this match.
He's going to be able to slide out the back door and get the two door again, ten before him.
So now he's not going to lose it.
Wasn't he 15 seconds to go in the first period, full heart of Iowa over Horton of Iowa State, the Hawks lead 26 to 6 here at the £190 level.
We have 100 heavyweight match to go between two very good wrestlers ranked in the top ten.
We'd like to get your comments about that address.
Post Office Box 6450.
John Turner, our final 131.
But college Wrestling Post Office Box 64 Johnston, Iowa 50131.
I'd love to hear from you.
Good time, whatever off of the make it better it's going to help one grade 10 to 5, two points for takedowns, one for escape and five takedowns, five escape, six takedown right at the beginning of the second period, 13 to 4.
Well, this is more of a mismatch.
Last week we were talking about the of mismatch because Coach John Smith disagreed with the disqualification with his wrestler at 190 who is 18 and five against the best competition the nation at 190.
And I disagreed saying that you know you just got to wrestle and it's not a mismatch in this case.
We have a mismatch in weight power.
And it's you.
It's awful.
Hart right here he has 11 point lady as riding time two He has a minute go in the second period he would like to get a major decision or a or of match termination.
But hey hey Near-Fall points down in five.
We'd like to be able to bring that shoulder underneath there.
So he's trying cap it underneath, come through and get the fall chest to chest out here.
He comes up high to try to get a different angle on it.
A little pressure up at the top of Horton to him like, oh, it's close now he's out low.
And that's a fall for raising hard climb for 5 minutes and 34 seconds.
Oh, actually, we're making 34 seconds now, 34 seconds for the win by Lethal Hart.
Here's a guy that right there that has a powerful show by Hallmark over the right heart and filling in for I will say that one of the models now now come to heavyweight two old friends, two old rivals from Iowa High School of West Ham, Iowa.
Right.
Number seven, 29 from Iowa State, ranked number eight earlier in the year in their first in that one at Ames.
So this is a tussle of sort of like those subtle things in state here among the heavyweights to see how it's going to rack up at the end of the year compared to what it was at the beginning last year.
But matches West Hand, who has been in a position several times this year now where the mat meet was on the line.
Well, now the meet's not on the line, but Pride's on the line.
Get him off.
Panic from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School, which is undefeated this year, by the way, and ranked among the nation's leading teams among high school fans and from south came up from far west on Highway 30.
Both these wrestlers can hit low attacks for heavyweights.
That's not very unusual and they both have nice low attacks.
Hand has leg that look kind of like lower weights, high crotches and transgenic.
He can hit both the singles and doubles from his feet up and with a double underhook trying to get a trip out of here and they come back to the center again with no score, but maybe okay on the edge.
Perhaps you saw Ben Lee and West Hand in that Oklahoma State meet last week.
And if you did, you didn't see anything.
What like what the left hand just did right there.
Right, right.
And you also hand has a very good high crotch to this man's right leg.
And so that was one thing Ben Lee did.
He considered that leg out of the way.
Looking at the meet summary there, we saw recapped at halftime 18 three and then McMahon from Iowa added on a major and Williams ended on a major and then Mulvihill squeaked out that 1211 victory to get Iowa State second to win and full heart just pinned Horton score 32 to 6 No score here in the last minute of the first period.
Hey Nick against pan warning bell Bill road so let's see more action So he makes his tires known but that's a hard one to understand right there because it doesn't change the match at all.
And Hand has been in and put put the pressure on a lot.
And it seems to me if there was going to be a stalling call, there should have been.
On the Iowa State wrestler Heyneke Meyer.
The double stalling really hasn't changed the match at all.
And Nobody's neither of them a hurdler anymore.
If you kind of want to see one called in so that they understand the situation and they can get after it, the incentive isn't there.
When a double warning happens, a lot of times with 14 seconds to go, the 10th match, the last match here between Iowa and Iowa State driver Hawkeye Clark, Iowa public television's coverage, the first of three in a triple header of college wrestling meets this weekend, Iowa conference championships tomorrow at five.
And you and I hosting Iowa State on Sunday to watch Lethal half.
The junior already won a national championship as a sophomore, hoping to become another three time in his hand.
Has his choice here in the second period against him and he takes down between around the clock danger for the Iowa wrestling cheerleaders.
They're on scanner as the two behemoths.
The two big guys came roaring through that room.
Gambling.
Shut up on top, hand on the bottom and gets to his feet to fight the hands on his arm as good action by hand up, Hand control out.
One more thing there.
Good hips out there.
And then he got the legs down.
Whoa, That's close from cheerleaders.
Look at that.
Yes.
Hey, Nick of Iowa State, Go get 15 and eight this year.
And of Iowa, 18 and seven.
They're both beaten, ranked wrestlers are fans.
We'll get to get the action going, guys.
Let's go.
300.
And they lockup head to head, ear to ear, trying get the inside position.
Neither of them able to.
They just locking up there and making it hard, limiting each other.
Good shot there by Haney trying to take advantage of Western's getting out of position for a moment 55 seconds to go in the second period one two nothing better than him on his escape at the beginning of this Schumacher, he time injury time injury time for West Ham sucking on his hand.
He doesn't like to admit it either.
I can tell you he didn't want to admit it hurts.
But finally he has to confess that something's not quite right.
Stinger in the shoulder probably.
Of course.
Tomorrow we have the Iowa conference Championships at 5:00.
And from Weinberg's night, Jim and Jim live, 2:00 on tomorrow, Sunday.
Come on, guys, Take it up.
Look forward to that one to here.
It's 32 to 6 in favor of France.
Iowa over Iowa State Red Raiders hard to watch.
That comes from the double stalling.
Now, now the match has changed and we'll see the officials sometimes that has a skill limit.
Yeah, he says it on that single snatch singles in college.
Just it's a matter of lowering his level and he's able to right there, put him down on his hips and is still a decent position here unless it can no heating and tighter just very he's got the ankle right there that's close that's close to me he got the two with got one second left a takedown with one second left in the second period.
Let your choice work.
That was his first major out of his first offensive move.
Really?
Yeah, It was an escape.
The stalling call came because a hand was backing off.
But then right at the starting call, he was able to drop in to the the leg.
And then he did a nice job along his level, dumping him to his hips takes charge now and hand.
Once Michigan National started to try to go on the feet, it's 4 to 1.
No riding time, of course.
Take it back track.
Take it back again.
Take it.
Go.
Hey, Nick has been warned too, so he has to stay active.
Here comes him right now.
This is where he could If he if he attacks once or twice more, he remember, has a stall warning.
That's right.
As a result of that double stall in the first period.
Okay, that's my time.
Okay.
Well, they had that time to go.
All right, clock ready?
West Park really wants to make sure he's not hurt before they start out.
Right.
Oh, here we go.
Injury time.
Injury time on call.
I think it's his second in the West.
Got his bell now.
Here we go.
Park says he's ready with a minute, but he didn't waste an injury time.
Now, maybe a little bit clapping and stammering CROWD Let's bring our man back.
He's three points down.
He got a takedown.
Well, he's got a situation here.
He could get the crowd behind him.
He's got to attack and get Helix.
Got called for stalling here.
That's got to be the strategy there One more time.
Right back in right in.
Then he can get it going for himself.
The crowd will get behind him.
Then it makes it easier to get a takedown and then a takedown.
With time to tie the match.
He's got to get the stuff that's got to be the strategy right now.
And Bobby Douglas of Ohio State knows that, too.
He's up well now.
Now hand is backing off one more less than a minute to go.
They're on the edge of the mat that there's a high crotch up to each one of his hands.
Good move.
And he got the takedown.
Good.
Wow, That was.
Yeah, that was close.
That two came fast because if you got to have both legs right there.
But now what he needs to do is go get right back at him.
He's got the optional star Johannessen to cut him.
Yeah, optional cut him loose here, and he can win this match if he can get stolen.
Both of them have this opportunity.
Yes, they have to stay active.
It's a two point separation.
Now, a takedown would tie it for him, but a penalty situation would make it all.
One more shot here.
Right.
Again, here comes Nick.
Now that he Nick Nice shot by he Nick from a strategy point 25 seconds to go he leads by two come out like a lot of oh you're 21 we're talking about two earlier people go with the clock he Nick that's right and back to talking about here man but he's stuck underneath.
He's stuck underneath.
He's not going to be able to get out.
Roach is going to call this what I call a stalemate right away, guys.
He's still 14 seconds.
Go 5 to 3, heading for a caution west.
Hold.
Hold it too quickly.
There we go.
We got beat.
Here he comes again.
Oh, 10 seconds.
He watch.
The clock ticked down.
There he goes, defend his hand, touching down.
He'll win here with his intention.
Got it down close.
And that's it.
He wins.
Wake up one by one.
Yep.
Royal time.
Those penalties.
You've got to watch him.
Yeah.
And just that close time.
Watch win seven matches I would say three the final score 932 to and West Ham loses his second of the year.
You're not twice the season once and Ames once in Iowa City He wins by one point each time So as you said it's two wins for the cyclones in this one and 121 26 by why Benson and the other 121 77 I'll hold on to win my mom.
Well, that's Kevin, two Iowa high school heavyweights who come those are big schools and have made their marks both ranked in the top eight in the heavyweight division of the National Collegiate Division one.
Well, Iowa, 32 and Iowa State nine
