[ Suspenseful music plays ] ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Siren chirps ] [ Conversing in Spanish continues ] ♪♪ -You know, he's a mythical figure, at this point, and if you read the books, the many books that have been written about him, even by the agents in the case, they even discuss it.
They don't know what was real and what wasn't real.
And that's part of it, is that, you know, this is a mythical character that, now, they're trying as if he's the only drug dealer in the world.
[ Camera shutter clicking continuously ] -We're going to vigorously defend against all the cooperators that all have an incentive to lie.
They're all getting something out of this.
They're not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts.
They're not doing this because they wanna rid the world of illegal drugs.
They're doing it because they want something.
They want money.
They want freedom.
They want something or another.
It's up for the jury to decide and we're just a part of this.
We're just here to give him his constitutional rights, and we will.
We'll give it to him vigorously and zealously and, now, we're off to go work on the case 'cause we've got a lot of work to do.

[ Wiping ] [ Rapid scraping ] -He's a little bit mask-like, you know.
I guess I look at him a little bit like a Howdy Doody face.
He's got a muzzle.
He's gray-toned down here.
There's almost no reds or warms in his face.
He's got an oddness to him that, if you -- You don't wanna make him look too normal.
Here it is.
It's that interview that he did with Sean Penn.
"Drug trafficking is a culture that was passed on from our ancestors."
He talks about how it is, you know, part of Mexican tradition.
[scoff] I mean, I've just recently been trying to catch myself up on this stuff because -- 'cause I'm covering this thing.
I told you, I was watching "Narcos."
Now, I feel like I need an education and I don't wanna be, you know, so... naive.
There were a couple of people outside the courthouse yesterday when my drawing was being shot and they tried to get in, hadn't gotten in.
I don't know if they were in the overflow room or not, but he was a Mexican fellow and he was looking at my drawing and I said, "These are the twins," and I was pointing to his daughters.
And he goes, "Oh, the snitches?"
And so he was coming with a mind-set.
And I thought that that was fascinating, that there are a lot of defenders of El Chapo out there, you know?
They like the myth of El Chapo.
And I guess he likes it, too.
♪♪ [ Indistinct conversations ] ♪♪ ♪♪ Aww.
Ugh.
♪♪ ♪♪ -I'm live in New York, outside of the courthouse.
Just to give you a sense of how people are feeling here, he is still feared deeply, even behind bars.
-Too many people know about him.
Too many people have read or seen movies or listened to television.
♪♪ ♪♪ -Mm-hmm.
-...there was people that would get arrested, brought to the United States, and given like really, really, like -Oh, I see what you're saying.
-cheap like really light penalties.
Like they'd just be like, "Alright.
You snitch on everyone you know."
Like I know a story of like my friend's from Colombia and his uncle like snitched on a...ton of people and he's like he's free and like he was like, when I search his uncle up, like it was literally like you can search up his name and it was like from like 1992, like, "Cali Cartel's Biggest Man Just Arrested in Switzerland."
It's crazy.
